Trends in nutrient fluxes and streamflow for selected tributaries in the Lake Erie watershed were calculated using monitoring data at 10 locations. Trends in flow-normalized nutrient fluxes were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). Site information and streamflow and water-quality records are contained in 3 zipped files named as follows: INFO (site information), Daily (daily streamflow records), and Sample (water-quality records). The INFO, Daily (flow), and Sample files contain the input data, by water-quality parameter and by site as .csv files, used to run trend analyses. This data set contains county-level estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizer, for both farm and nonfarm uses, for the conterminous United States, for 1987 through 2012. State-level farm and nonfarm nitrogen and phosphorus were derived from the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO) commercial fertilizer sales data. State estimates were then allocated to the county-level using fertilizer expenditure from the Census of Agriculture as county weights for farm fertilizer, and effective population density as county weights for nonfarm fertilizer. To elucidate factors contributing to dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion in the Stockton Deep Water Ship Channel in the lower San Joaquin River, spatial and temporal changes in algae and nutrient concentrations were investigated in relation to flow regime under the semiarid climate conditions.2. Ecosystem services provided by floodplains include removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediments, and sequestration of carbon. Effectiveness of floodplains in providing these services is dependent on the extent and location of connection between floodplain and river. Tributary loading of sediments, nitrogen and phosphorus to the Upper Mississippi River contribute to the development of river and coastal eutrophication as well as hypoxic conditions in the Gulf of Mexico.
