Surface water quality, water isotope, and phytoplankton enumeration data were collected to evaluate the impact of an Emergency Drought Barrier (EDB) in False River in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected on six days during 2022 and 2023 (June 7, June 21, July 27, August 9, October 12, November 30, 2022, and February 21, 2023). Sampling occurred in Franks Tract, Mildred Island, the San Joaquin River, and various sloughs and cuts connecting these water bodies. High-resolution boat-based mapping data and discrete water samples were collected and analyzed for: nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus (orthophosphate), total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, total phosphorus,...
Suspended particles are an essential component of large rivers influencing channel geomorphology, biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, and food web resources. The Upper Mississippi River (UMR) is a large floodplain river that exhibits pronounced spatiotemporal variation in environmental conditions and biota, providing an ideal environment for investigating dynamics of suspended particles in large river ecosystems. Here we investigated two questions: (1) How do suspended particle characteristics (e.g., size and morphology) vary temporally and spatially? and (2) What environmental variables have the strongest association with particle characteristics? Water sampling was conducted in June, August, and September of...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data collected from Milford Lake, Kansas, during June through October 2018. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. This data release was produced in compliance with the federal open-data requirements as a way to make scientific products associated with USGS research efforts and publications available to the public. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at eight USGS sample locations at Milford Lake. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundance (density) and biovolume are reported.
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data collected from Milford Lake and the Republican River, Kansas, during May 2016 through June 2020. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. This data release was produced in compliance with the federal open-data requirements as a way to make scientific products associated with USGS research efforts and publications available to the public. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at 42 USGS sample locations at Milford Lake and 1 USGS sample location on the Republican River. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level...
This dataset contains taxonomic and biovolume data for phytoplankton sampled from Detroit Lake, OR, in August, 2019, and August, 2020. Taxonomy is reported to the lowest possible taxonomic level along with total and percent biovolume. Surface grab samples for phytoplankton enumeration were collected with a van Dorn type sampler and then transferred into a clearn polycarbonate churn. Whole water samples were dispensed for total nutrients and phytoplankton identification and enumeration, the latter preserved with 1 percent Lugol's iodine solution. Samples were analyzed at BSA Environmental Services in Beachwood, Ohio. Cell numbers of all identified phytoplankton taxa were quantified on a per milliliter basis using...

Upper Klamath Lake, located in southern Oregon, is a hypereutrophic lake where cyanobacterial blooms, dominated by Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), occur every summer. The decay of excess biomass after AFA senescence leads to problematic water quality conditions including high pH ( > 9) and anoxia. Water samples from the photic zone and bottom of the water column, and the flocculation layer of the bottom sediments were collected weekly at four sites within Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon during summer 2016. This data release reports the chemical and microbiological analysis of these samples.
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data collected from Bushy Park Reservoir, South Carolina, from September 2013 to April 2015. The digital dataset includes samples collected at 1 to 7 locations on Bushy Park Reservoir sites. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundance (density) and biovolume are reported.

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release includes phytoplankton data collected from four reservoirs in Kansas, during August 2020 through August 2022. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at twenty-five locations within Marion Reservoir, Milford Lake, Perry Lake, and Hillsdale Lake. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and densities and biovolumes are reported. This data is part of a larger multi-agency project between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric...
The Bushy Park Reservoir is a relatively shallow impoundment in a semi-tropical climate and is the principal water supply for the 400,000 people of the City of Charleston and the surrounding areas including the industries in the Bushy Park Industrial Complex. Although there is an adequate supply of freshwater in the reservoir, there are taste-and-odor water-quality concerns. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Charleston Water System, monitored the hydrology and water-quality conditions in the Bushy Park Reservoir immediately before, during, and after a unique shutdown period when the average daily 800-cubic-feet-per-second withdrawals by South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE+G) Williams Station...
Nutrient and phytoplankton data indicate poor environmental health in four oxbow lakes in central Louisiana suggesting that long-term agriculture practices and increases in shoreline development have accelerated eutrophication. Surface-water quality and phytoplankton indicators of eutrophication were examined at Lake Bruin, Lake St. John, Lake St. Joseph, and False River Lake along an eutrophication gradient. These oxbow lakes are cut-off meanders of the Mississippi River that do not receive overbank flow from the river due to the levee system built in the early twentieth century. Oxbows have formed at various times in the last few hundred years as the Mississippi River carves a more efficient hydrologic route to...
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides phytoplankton data collected from Stagecoach Reservoir, Colorado, during the summer months, July through September, of 2017 and 2018. The data were collected by the USGS, in cooperation with the Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality-assurance and quality-control samples collected at the sampling site on Stagecoach Reservoir at Dam (USGS site 401707106495800). Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, and abundance (density) and biovolume are reported.
This data release documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the North Delta in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta of California, USA. The data set includes nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and chlorophyll . Data-collection cruises were conducted under three different environmental/flow conditions in August, September, and October 2018 that coincided with conditions prior to, during, and following a directed flow action or pulse of agricultural return water organized by the California Department of Water Resources and California Natural Resources Agency...

Hand-held hyperspectral spectroscopy data were collected in 2022 in Franks Tract, a flooded area located in the central Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta of California. The data were collected from a boat and co-located within pixels from the Ocean Land Color Imaging (OLCI) sensor on the Sentinel-3A and 3-B satellites. Data from 16 sites within 7 OLCI pixels were collected on three days: July 14, August 3, and November 3, 2022. Radiance measurements from the water, sky, and a reflectance plaque were collected to enable calculation of water-leaving radiance (Mobley 1999, Ruddick et al. 2019). At the location of each spectroscopy site, discrete water samples were also collected and analyzed for chlorophyll a, dissolved...
