This project will address species-habitat relationships for a priority aquatic system for the GCPO LCC, Mainstem Big Rivers. Specifically, the project will collect subsurface aquatic habitat data using side-scan sonar and high resolution bathymetry data in the Pearl River system of Louisiana. This project expands on current work ongoing in the Pearl River, and would extend habitat data collection for the purposes of making recommendations on restoration of aquatic habitat for species endpoints in this aquatic system. This project directly addresses landscape conservation design and will be used to inform Adaptation Strategies.
This report enumerates the methodology and results of mapping glades in a total of 173 7.5 minute quadrangle maps for the Ozark Highlands Section of northern Arkansas during the 11 month reporting period commencing June of 2014 and ending May 20, 2015. When combined with the previous mapping during 2013-2014, the grand totals for all glades mapped in Arkansas are 29,810 glade polygons totaling 44,107 acres in 221 7.5 minute quadrangle maps. The Ozark Highlands Ecological Section was completed. The latest resulting glade shapefile reflects assignment of rock substrates that correspond to the Missouri glade rock types. The author decided to assign rock types based on accumulated knowledge, actual field verifications,...
The balance between economic needs and natural resource conservation will become more tenuous in the future as a result of a myriad of environmental stressors. We propose a methodology that can help guide forest management practices whenever adequate species locational data and quality forest or land use data exist. More specifically, the results of this study can be used to evaluate alternative land and silviculture management scenarios in terms of creating or maintaining high-quality forest habitat for a specific species. We used data collected on radiotelemetered black bears from 1988 to 2015 to develop a regional habitat model throughout Louisiana and Arkansas using Mahalanobis distance (D2) statistic. We created...

Collection of 4 assessments for Upland Streams and Rivers. The Condition Index ranks stream segments according to how well they meet the Desired State described qualitatively and quantitatively in the draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). From the Condition Index, 3 assessments are derived that rank opportunities for management and restoration of conditions included in the Condition Index – Watershed Land Use, Riparian Cover, and Stream Meander. Watershed Land Use management opportunities are based on the proportion of undisturbed land in the contributing (i.e. cumulative) watershed such that stream segments meeting the Desired State are considered Maintenance opportunities (values 5-6). Those that do not meet the...

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Protection Opportunity action map for the Upland Hardwood (Woodland) habitat system ranks pixels (250-m) based primarily on the Upland Hardwood (Woodland) Condition Index such that unprotected sites within healthy landscapes are ranked higher than those in very fragmented landscapes. Ranks are increased by information on existing partner interest (i.e. stated priority areas), elevated risk of change by 2060, and predicted occupancy of a majority of species identified in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4)....

In large river ecosystems, the timing, extent, duration and frequency of floodplain inundation greatly affect the quality of fish and wildlife habitat and the supply of important ecosystem goods and services. Seasonal high flows provide connectivity from the river to the floodplain, and seasonal inundation of the floodplain governs ecosystem structure and function. River regulation and other forms of hydrologic alteration have altered the connectivity of many rivers with their adjacent floodplain – impacting the function of wetlands on the floodplain and in turn, impacting the mainstem river function. Conservation and management of remaining floodplain resources can be improved through a better understanding of...

This data represents an assessment of forest composition used in the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems by the GCPO LCC. We used a combination of remote sensing products including 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) forest classes and the 2011 MAV forest classification layer produced by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture to delineate patches of all forest types in the GCPO LCC. We used NLCD as the primary data source when assessing forests outside the GCPO LCC MAV subgeography, and the LMVJV forest classification as the primary data source for forest assessment within the MAV. NLCD was developed using 2011 Landsat TM imagery, with forest classes including only areas with trees exceeding...

The Comprehensive Habitat Type Dataset was developed by merging NOAA Benthic Habitat Atlas (BHA), Ecological Mapping Systems of Texas (aka Texas Ecological Systems Database, TESD), and National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) data within the study area for the ICF 2012 project (CGP LCC 2012-002 Employing the Conservation Design Approach on Sea-Level Rise Impacts on Coastal Avian Habitats along the Central Texas Coast). BHA data was used to depict mangroves, oysters, and patchy, continuous, and discontinuous seagrass beds where BHA existed within the study area. NWI data was used for all wetland/intertidal environments where NWI data existed within the study area. TESD data was used for all upland environments, and weltand/intertidal...

This dataset was last updated February 2017. This version incorporates a revised version of the land cover classification, Terrestrial and Aquatic Habitat Map (DSLland), Version 3.1 developed by the University of Massachusetts, which included the addition of The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast lakes and ponds classification. The Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a medium-sized raptor that feeds on small mammals, frogs, snakes, and other small prey. It has been chosen to represent the habitat needs of other species of wildlife that also use mature forest, especially in floodplains or with wetlands, including species with relatively large home ranges. This dataset depicts the potential capability of the landscape...

This version incorporates a revised version of the land cover classification, Terrestrial and Aquatic Habitat Map (DSLland), Version 3.1 developed by the University of Massachusetts, which included the addition of The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast lakes and ponds classification. The Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla) is a common, migratory songbird that builds a nest shaped like an old-fashioned oven on the floor of forests across much of the Northeast. It has been chosen to represent the habitat needs of other species of wildlife that also use moist hardwood and mixed forests. This dataset depicts the potential capability of the landscape throughout the Northeastern United...
Knowing where a species is found or may be found in the future is critical to developing a successful habitat conservation plan. This quick guide reviews correlation-based and process-based species distribution models and their uses in the context of HCPs. It also addresses considerations for evaluating species distribution models, using multiple models, and working with model uncertainty. Examples are provided.
The goal of the Northwest Basin and Range (NWBR) Synthesis project is to synthesize existing landscape planning and science and develop a shared conservation vision for stakeholders in the region. This webinar provides an overview of the NWBR Synthesis’ work to identify shared conservation priorities, including: - The Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation framework - How the NWBR is using the framework to synthesize current landscape planning and science - How experts will vet this process
This presentation aired as part of the Great Basin LCC webinar series on October 11, 2017. Speakers included Erica Fleishman, U.C. Davis, and Jimi Gragg, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.Description: As the distribution and abundance of non-native cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) in the Great Basin has increased, the extent and frequency of fire in the region has increased by as much as 200%. These changes in fire regimes are associated with loss of the sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) and native grasses and forbs in which many native animals, including Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), breed and feed. Managers have suggested changes in fire regimes, fuels treatments and post-fire restoration with...
With HCPs, reserves are created as one means of mitigating take. This means they are designed to provide a target level of benefits for a particular species or set of species. This quick guide reviews approaches for designing and implementing reserves that address climate change impacts, vulnerabilities, and uncertainty. Examples are provided.

Prioritization for maintenance of intact habitat (i.e., habitat quality rating of Good or Very Good), based on local scale ecological integrity, degree of threats faced, potential conservation opportunities, and conservation value of surrounding landscape. In contrast to ecological integrity ratings; threat, opportunity and landscape rankings are largely based on the range of values of any given indicator across the geography, sorted by quantile. There are some exceptions, particularly for indicators used to develop threat rankings (e.g., urban development risk).Prioritization for restoration of degraded habitat (i.e., habitat quality rating of Fair or Poor), based on local scale ecological integrity, potential...
This project integrates a reforestation decision support model for priority forest breeding birds and a restoration decision support tool for the federally-threatened Louisiana Black Bear. It was developed specifically to focus habitat restoration projects on frequently flooded agricultural lands within priority portions of the delta of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, which were funded primarily by the Walton Family Foundation in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
This project will use a Bayesian statistical framework to predict coastal erosion and inundation under a range of sea level rise scenarios. The Bayesian framework will also develop visualization products that will help natural resource managers anticipate sea level rise and adapt to the projected changes. Lastly, the frameworks will asses the potential impacts of sea level rise on coastal ecosystems and related wildlife resources.
This project maps glade complexes from aerial imagery at fine-scale resolution and ground truths the classified data. Phase I covers the Missouri Ozarks.
