The Gulf of Mexico is estimated to contain nearly half of all U.S. salt marsh systems, which are rapidly disappearing within the Gulf States. Salt marshes are complex, dynamic, and transitional systems that provide habitat for a myriad of wildlife species, filtration that supports water quality, and natural barriers that contribute to the security of inland coastal areas. Loss of coastal wetlands and degradation of estuarine habitat along the northern Gulf of Mexico, and particularly along coastal Louisiana have been recognized as two of the primary issues influencing Gulf ecosystem integrity.Several multi-agency consortiums, including the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force, have identified conservation...

Basal area is a measure of the cross-sectional area of trees calculated by multiplying the foresters’ constant (0.005454) by the squared diameter of each tree to determine a measure of tree area (ft2 or m2) per unit area (acre or ha). Similar to an assessment of forest canopy cover, basal area provides a measure of horizontal structure, and is closely associated with measures of vertical structure. When assessing condition of upland hardwood woodland and forest systems, the GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda targets a large proportion of the basal area in those systems to be composed of oak and hickory species. This endpoint targets >90% of basal area as oak and hickory for upland hardwood woodland systems and >70%...

An area depicting ownership parcels of the surface estate. Each surface ownership parcel is tied to a particular legal transaction. The same individual or organization may currently own many parcels that may or may not have been acquired through the same legal transaction. Therefore, they are captured as separate entities rather than merged together. This is in contrast to Basic Ownership, in which the surface ownership parcels having the same owner are merged together. Basic Ownership provides the general user with the Forest Service versus non-Forest Service view of land ownership within National Forest boundaries. Surface Ownership provides the land status user with a current snapshot of ownership within National...

This shape file depicts the boundaries of current tidal conveyances issued by the State of Alaska. Each location is represented as a polygonal feature and has an associated Land Administration System(LAS) file-type and file-number which serves as an index to associated LAS case-file information.Tidal conveyance boundaries were converted from the digital (ArcInfo) files used to produce the statestatus plats. Additional LAS case-file and customer information may be obtained at: http://www.dnr.state.ak.us/las/LASMenu.cfm.Those requiring more information regarding the tidal conveyances should contact the Alaska Departmentof Natural Resources Public Information Center directly.

This dataset represents the extent of urbanization (for the year indicated) predicted by the model SLEUTH, developed by Dr. Keith C. Clarke, at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Department of Geography and modified by David I. Donato of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Eastern Geographic Science Center (EGSC). Further model modification and implementation was performed at the Biodiversity and Spatial Information Center at North Carolina State University.Urban growth probability extents throughout the 21st century were projected for the Southeast Regional Assessment Project (SERAP), which encompasses all or parts of the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky,...
One of the major challenges in understanding changes in coastal processes in western Alaska is the lack of measured ocean data in the region. This project leverages existing human resources, and physical and computational infrastructure to collect and disseminate oceanographic observations in the Bering Sea. From instrument restoration, transport and deployment, through data streaming, recovery and dissemination, this project considers the end to end supports necessary to gather, promote, and serve oceanographic data along Alaska’s Western coast. Real‐time sea‐state conditions directly benefit emergency managers and local communities, particularly in dealing with small craft hazards and predicting storm surges...
