The sea-cliff bedstraw (Galium buxifolium) data set contains two types of information, formatted as CSVs: 1) Spatial coordinates (WGS 84) of known population occurrences on Santa Cruz and San Miguel Islands, California, as of 2006 (sensitive locality information); 2) Demographic data measured at four populations growing on Santa Cruz Island. Three of the populations were measured in 2005 and 2006, the fourth was measured in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2014. These data support the following publication: McEachern, K., Chess, K.A., Flagg, K., and Niessen, K.G., 2019, Sea-cliff bedstraw (Galium buxifolium) patterns and trends, 2005–14, on Santa Cruz and San Miguel Islands, Channel Islands National Park, California:...

This dataset records mortality-- including involvement of bark beetles-- and burn severity information for trees in long term forest dynamics plots in Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park that experienced fire. These data support the following publication: Furniss, T.J., Das, A.J., van Mantgem, P.J., Stephenson, N.L. and Lutz, J.A., 2021. Crowding, climate, and the case for social distancing among trees. This data relase is a product of Atlas of Breeding Seabirds of the Main Hawaiian Islands Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (KPNWR) is an important seabird breeding site located at the northeastern tip of Kauaʻi in the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI). Despite the regional significance of KPNWR as one of the most important breeding sites for Red-tailed Tropicbirds (Phaethon rubricauda), Red-footed Boobies (Sula sula), and Wedge-tailed Shearwaters (Ardenna pacifica) in MHI, robust and accurate population surveys have not been consistently conducted and recent information is lacking. In this study, we completed comprehensive population surveys for these three species during the 2019 breeding season. Using direct censusing...

These data are the results of surveys for the Shasta salamander complex (Hydromantes shastae, H. samweli, and H. wintu) conducted at 87 survey plots on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest from April 2019 to March 2020. Time- and area-constrained occupancy surveys were conducted at plots selected within high-priority areas identified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. There are additional surveys planned for future field seasons. As the Shasta Salamander is under review for listing under the Endangered Species Act, sensitive location information is restricted, and can be made available upon request by contacting the dataset point of contact.
We used a stratified-random sampling approach to estimate the total abundance of Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Ardenna pacifica) nest sites across Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (KPNWR), Kauaʻi, during 1-7 July 2019. We first identified strata as unique geographic areas of the refuge to account for potential differences in nesting habitat and non-uniform nest site clustering. We then sub-divided strata where we expected high, low, minimal, or no nest site abundance. These distinctions were based on knowledge of shearwater nesting distribution gained while performing extensive ground-searching for tropicbirds across the entire refuge in April and May 2019. We delineated strata boundaries using recent satellite...

The U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center (USGS-WERC), with support from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), is working with many partners to generate an Atlas of Breeding Seabirds of the Main Hawaiian Islands. This atlas will provide benchmarks to measure future changes in seabird population sizes and breeding distribution throughout Hawai‘i and will also assist efforts to evaluate threats to Hawaiian seabirds both on land and at sea. Ultimately, species- and colony-specific data for main Hawaiian Island seabirds on land and at sea will inform evaluations of potential risk and options for mitigation strategies for effects of offshore energy infrastructure on seabirds. This ScienceBase...

This database contains demographic and movement variables for 158 adult Agassiz's desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) translocated from the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, in the central Mojave Desert, California, in spring of 2008 and monitored through fall of 2018. The tortoises, fitted with radio transmitters, were translocated to plots south of Fort Irwin and followed monthly until fall of 2018, when transmittered were removed, and the project was ended. The database consists of unique identification numbers of the tortoises, sex and size, dates, details of locations, and status of the tortoises. These data support the following publication: Mack, J.S. and Berry, K.H., 2023. Drivers of survival...

The Shasta salamander (Hydromantes shastae) has been petitioned for listing under the Endangered Species Act. The greatest threat to the species is likely habitat loss that will be caused by the increase in elevation of Shasta Lake that will occur with proposed increases in the height of Shasta Dam to increase water storage capacity and maintain cold water for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Another potential threat is the fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, which has not yet been detected in North America but is lethal to related salamanders (Hydromantes strinatii) in Europe (Martel et al. 2014). In addition to these threats, recent genetic evidence suggests that the species as originally petitioned...

This dataset provides summary statistics of multiple sage-grouse microhabitat characteristics of the Great Basin. These data support the following publication: Coates, P.S., Brussee, B.E., Ricca, M.A., Dudko, J.E., Prochazka, B.G., Espinosa, S.P., Casazza, M.L., and Delehanty, D.J., 2017, Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) nesting and brood-rearing microhabitat in Nevada and California—Spatial variation in selection and survival patterns: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2017-1087, 79 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20171087.

Provided are data containing condition assessments on individual giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum; SEGI) stems and post-fire regeneration counts within Board Camp, Suwanee, New Oriole Lake, Homer’s Nose, and a subset of Redwood Mountain and Dillonwood groves of Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, respectively. Stem data contain condition-related attributes (e.g., spatial location, diameter breast height, status - live or dead, percent canopy that is live, scorched or torched). Regeneration plots are located using a spatially-balanced sampling design (Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified - 'GRTS'). Each regeneration plot is a fixed radius circle (11.35 meters or 17.84 meters) and contain count data...
We used a stratified-random sampling approach to estimate the total abundance of Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Ardenna pacifica) nest sites across Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (KPNWR), Kauaʻi, in 2019. To estimate stratum-specific nest site abundance, we generated randomly located, non-overlapping circular plots within several sampling strata. We set plot radius to 5 m in most strata, except for some portions of Kīlauea Point where a 3-m radius was used to accommodate narrow strips of habitat. We generated enough plots to survey 10 percent of total stratum area where we expected high nest site abundance, and 5 percent of stratum area where expected nest site abundance was low or minimal. This data table contains...
