Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management, the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength. The data table consists of a compilation of sea otter survey results from Bering Island, Russia and select Western Aleutian Islands conducted between 1959 and 2015. The counts were reduced to sea otters per kilometer of coastline for temporal comparability. A correction factor of 3.6 was applied to aerial survey totals to yield results comparable to skiff based surveys. The data table provides the island, year, mode (aerial, skiff, or ground), and shore length covered in each survey. Counts of independent otters and pups are provided if available. Total otters counted or calculated with the correction factor and the calculated linear density are also provided.
The reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) provides a natural experiment regarding the effects of top predators on scavenger species. Fieldwork on the Northern Range of Yellowstone indicates that wolves facilitate carrion acquisition by scavengers, but it is unclear whether this represents a transient or permanent effect of wolf reintroduction.
