Renewables in the Mojave Desert This map shows the result of an analysis to characterize the distribution of conservation values across the Mojave Desert Ecoregion. Solar Energy Development in the Western Mojave Desert (July 2012) This assessment identifies areas in the West Mojave Desert where human activities have degraded the land’s conservation value, making them potentially low impact locations for solar development. Authors also describe a comprehensive mitigation program that aims to produce a net improvement to the conservation status of species and habitats in the West Mojave Desert. Publication: An Approach to Enhance the Conservation-Compatibility of Solar Energy Development (January 2012) Mojave...

Our mission is to develop and maintain a cost-effective, central information source and inventory of the locations, biology, and status of all threatened, endangered, rare, and at-risk plants and animals in Nevada. We use the best available biological data to continually evaluate conservation priorities for over 700 native animals, plants, and vegetation types, focusing on those that are at greatest risk of extinction or serious decline. As a non-regulatory, independent resource for scientifically objective data, environmental review, and technical assistance and expertise, we support the needs of diverse planning, conservation management, research, education, and economic development activities in Nevada. The...

This map shows the grasslands priority conservation areas (GPCAs) within North America's Central Grasslands, an ecosystem considered among the most threatened in the continent and the world. GPCAs are defined as areas of tri-national importance due to their ecological significance and threatened nature, which are in need of international cooperation for their successful conservation. In 2004, 55 GPCAs were identified by biodiversity experts through research and a workshop co-organized by the CEC. Details of the initial selection process can be found in North American Grassland Priority Conservation Areas: Technical Report and Documentation, and the CEC publication Grasslands: Toward a North American Conservation...

In 2007, American Wildlands (Bozeman, MT) initiated a "Priority Linkage Assessment" (PLA) through which we have identified, cataloged and prioritized the threats to, and opportunities for, maintaining connectivity in the U.S. Northern Rockies (Montana, Idaho and Wyoming). The process involved interviewing wildlife movement and connectivity experts from state and federal agencies, and independent biologists with proven knowledge of wide-ranging wildlife. The experts were asked to use their professional and personal experience in the field (knowledge of related scientific studies and their own field research) to identify important areas of wildlife connectivity ("linkages" - defined as as a specific area through which...

This dataset representing the focal areas for restoration funding prioritization based on specific natural resources. Features in this dataset include the western AZ Riparian focal area which was formed by combining portions of the 100 year floodplain along the Colorado River as well as the Gila River with a buffer of 0.25 miles on either side of the river, and the Limitrophe Coordinated Management Area, the Central Arizona Grasslands extended to the northwest, Grasslands in Apache and Navajo Counties, the Southeast watershed in the southern portion of the Safford and Tucson Field Offices, and the Wildlife Habitat Restoration area in the Arizona Strip. Portions of each of the District Planning areas are included...

Good management of scientific data is a critical issue for the Department. The Biogeographic Data Branch (BDB) performs a leadership, policy and standards setting role for biological and geographic data management activities for the entire Department, its contractors, and partner organizations. BDB provides GIS support for all CDFW branches. This structure facilitates inter-branch teamwork and GIS workload balancing as changing conditions warrant. BDB contains biological data development programs that are especially dependent and closely linked with GIS and emerging related technologies. These data development activities include vegetation mapping, rare species tracking, species range mapping, aggregation of existing...

NatureServe worked with several federal, state, and NGO partners in the United States and Mexico to conduct a climate change vulnerability assessment of major natural community types found within the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. The project focused on ten major upland, riparian, and aquatic community types, including pinyon-juniper woodlands, Joshua tree-blackbrush scrub, creosote-bursage scrub, salt desert scrub, Paloverde-mixed cacti scrub, semi-desert grassland, desert riparian and stream, riparian mesquite bosque, and desert springs. This effort piloted a new Habitat Climate Change Vulnerability Index (HCCVI) approach being developed by NatureServe, as a companion to an existing index for species. The project...
