This data release documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in Suisun Marsh and Suisun Bay in the San Francisco Estuary of California, USA. The data set includes nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, chlorophyll, blue-green algal pigments, and phytoplankton community structure. Data-collection cruises were conducted under three different environmental/flow conditions between July - September 2018 that coincided with conditions prior to, during, and following the Suisun Marsh Salinity Control Gates Summer Action. The action is part of the Delta Smelt Resiliency...

As part of the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey is expanding National Assessment of Coastal Change Hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands. The intent is to provide federal, state, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability of coastal wetlands to various factors and to evaluate their ecosystem service potential. For this purpose, the response and resilience of coastal wetlands to physical factors need to be assessed in terms of the ensuing change to their vulnerability and ecosystem services. Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (EBFNWR), New Jersey, was selected as a pilot study area. As part of this data synthesis effort, hydrodynamic and sediment transport...
This hybrid medium-resolution national hydrography dataset with river corridor attributes (NHD-RC) for the conterminous United States (CONUS) was created by merging lentic and lotic attributes from the high-resolution NHDPlus (U.S. Geological Survey, 2020) into the medium-resolution NHDPlus Version 2.1 (U.S. Geological Survey, 2016). NHD-RC includes attributes from an additional 5.4 million small pond features and 5 million kilometers of small streams beyond the approximately 123,000 lentic waterbodies and 4 million kilometers of larger streams and rivers accounted for NHDPlus Version 2.1. This hybrid approach permitted the use of the many attributes that have been linked to NHD by others, including land cover and...

Data was collected in the Cache Slough Complex located in the northern San Francisco Estuary to characterize water quality parameters at high spatial resolution. Data collection was conducted on three separate occasions: October 2017, May 2018, and October 2018. Data set includes nitrate, ammonium, ortho-phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, chlorophyll, stable isotopes including water isotopes. Measurements were used to calculate evaporation to inflow ratios and water residence time.

Groundwater samples collected from the Edwards aquifer in south-central Texas were analyzed for water-quality data to assess aquifer susceptibility to contaminants. Water-quality data included environmental tracers of groundwater age (tritium, tritiogenic helium-3, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon-14, and radiogenic helium-4), calibrated to lumped parameter models (LPMs). Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells, domestic-supply wells, and public-supply wells during 2017 and 2018. This data release includes seven tables detailing these data. The final estimates for mean groundwater ages determined for samples from 65 wells ranged from 4 years to 45,400 years, with a median of 25 years. Table 1 provides...
The age, or residence time, of water is a fundamental descriptor of catchment hydrology, revealing information about the storage, flow pathways, and source of water in a single integrated measure. While there has been tremendous recent interest in residence time estimation to characterize watersheds, there are relatively few studies that have quantified residence time at the watershed scale, and fewer still that have extended those results beyond single catchments to larger landscape scales. We examined topographic controls on residence time for seven catchments (0.085–62.4 km2) that represent diverse geologic and geomorphic conditions in the western Cascade Mountains of Oregon. Our primary objective was to determine...
