Freshwater systems are critically imperiled and continue to be threatened by human encroachment and water development. The upper Gila River in New Mexico is one of the last unobstructed rivers in the Colorado River basin with a mostly intact native fish fauna, including two federally listed and one state-listed fish species. Kansas State University will develop methodologies or decision support tools to assess or evaluate current or existing resource management practices to learn and adapt to the effects of climate change on fish species. The researchers will investigate how the connectivity of the Gila River habitat impacts the fish population with respect to the behavior of native and non-native species.
Final Report Abstract: More than half of the world’s population relies upon monsoonal rainfall that supports agriculture. While in many locations climate change is resulting in less moisture from fewer winter storms and more intense summer precipitation events, rural working landscapes (agricultural managed systems) are struggling to recover from increasingly extreme droughts and floods. This project resulted in an extensive mapping of coastal change along the entire coastline of the Western Alaska Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC). The work provides important baseline information on the distribution and magnitude of landscape changes over the past 41 years. This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release provides surface-water and bed sediment quality data at the Bronx River, New York, 2019. The data were collected with support from the Urban Waters Federal Partnership (UWFP) and others. Surface-water samples were collected at six locations along the Bronx River and analyzed for poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. This Data Release provides spatial data to support analysis of land cover change and channel width change in the Bogachiel and Calawah River basins, Washington. Fish mercury (Hg) data were compiled for 392 unique locations on freshwater streams and rivers in New York State for the period 1969-2016. A total of 7620 records were compiled from state, federal, and non-governmental organization databases. The compiled data were for samples of 65 non-anadromous species or species groups in which Hg was analyzed in whole fish or edible flesh, and for which sufficient ancillary data were available for interpretation. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data for samples collected from eleven large river sites throughout the United States, from June through October 2018. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected as part of a National Water Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin occurrence in the Nation's large rivers. This child data release includes fluorometer measurements of Rhodamine WT dye concentration and turbidity acquired during a tracer experiment performed on the Missouri River near Columbia, Missouri, on May 5, 2021. One of the primary goals of this tracer experiment was to assess the feasibility of inferring concentrations of a visible dye (Rhodamine WT) from various types of remotely sensed data in a large, highly turbid natural river channel. Previous research on remote sensing of tracer dye concentrations has focused on clear-flowing streams, but the Missouri River is much more turbid. Aquatic ecological surveys are valuable to understanding the interaction between the biotic and abiotic components in rivers and streams. However, large-scale assessments of the water chemistry, geomorphology, and ecological community are usually not feasible due to limited resources. Remote sensing technologies, such as high-resolution sonar, can be used to collect more detailed information about the benthic characteristics of macro habitats in the Illinois River. Multibeam echosounders collect multibeam and sidescan simultaneously, providing high-resolution images of the riverbed. Sidescan images, in raster format, show the recorded intensity of acoustic signal returns from the riverbed. The acoustic data were collected from the East Pit of the Hanson Pits (where accessible) of the Marseilles reach June 27, 2018, and August 25, 2020.

This data release consists of an orthophoto of the Tanana River in Alaska acquired on July 24, 2019. The orthophoto was produced from images obtained using a Hasselblad A6D-100C 100 megapixel digital mapping camera deployed within a pod mounted on the landing gear of a Robinson R44 helicopter. Images were acquired as the helicopter transited a series of flight lines designed to provide complete coverage, with ample overlap, of the study area along the Tanana River. Also within the pod was an ATLANS GPS/Inertial Motion Unit (IMU) that recorded the position and orientation of the platform during the flight.
