This data release contains coastal wetland synthesis products for the state of Connecticut. Metrics for resiliency, including the unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR), marsh elevation, tidal range, wave power, and exposure potential to environmental health stressors are calculated for smaller units delineated from a digital elevation model, providing the spatial variability of physical factors that influence wetland health. The U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of providing federal, state, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability and ecosystem service potential of these wetlands. For...

In the northern Gulf of Mexico, mangrove forests have been expanding their northern range limits in parts of Texas, Louisiana, and north Florida since 1989. In response to warming winter temperatures, mangroves, which are dominant in warmer climates, are expected to continue migrating northward at the expense of salt marshes, which fare better in cooler climates. The ecological implications and timing of mangrove expansion is not well understood, and coastal wetland managers need information and tools that will enable them to identify and forecast the ecological impacts of this shift from salt marsh to mangrove-dominated coastal ecosystems. To address this need, researchers will host workshops and leverage existing...

Metrics for resiliency, including unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR), marsh elevation, mean tidal range, and shoreline change rate are calculated for smaller units delineated from a Digital Elevation Model, providing the spatial variability of physical factors that influence wetland health. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of...

Description of condition index value scores for estuarine tidal marsh along and within 10 km of the GCPO LCC Gulf Coast subgeography. A series of raster calculations were used in a dichotomous decision-based framework to compile a per-pixel draft condition index value at a 10 m resolution for GCPO estuarine tidal marsh based on the number of configuration and condition endpoints met within each marsh pixel. Pixels not identified as a estuarine marsh but that were identified as having the potential to be marsh were given a score of 1, provided the pixels were not classified as developed. Potential estuarine tidal marsh pixels were derived from a combination of potential estuarine tidal marsh classes in the Landfire...

This dataset represents stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic information from tissue samples collected from diamondback terrapins, potential prey items, and vegetation from 6 salt marsh sites (4 mainland, 2 island) within a 30 km section of southern Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, USA. Red blood cells were collected from terrapins in 2011 (mature females), and whole blood samples were collected in 2015 and 2019 from mature males and females and immature females. Vegetation and invertebrates prey samples were collected within proximity of terrapin capture sites in 2015 and 2019.

Draft 2 of the summary report for ecological assessment of estuarine tidal marsh systems along the GCPO LCC Gulf Coast subgeography. This includes an assessment of landscape endpoints identified by the GCPO Adaptation Science Management Team in the draft GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda. The estuarine tidal marsh priority system in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks LCC (GCPO LCC) Integrated Science Agenda (ISA) includes general ecological systems of brackish/saltwater marsh and seagrass beds and was adopted as one of two initial ecological systems of focus for the Gulf Coast subgeography of the GCPO LCC (the other being beaches and dunes). The desired ecological state for Gulf Coast estuarine tidal marsh is a...

Our study focused on seven marsh sites distributed throughout Humboldt Bay and largely withinrefuge boundaries; Hookton Slough Island, Salmon Creek marsh, White Slough marsh, EurekaSlough marsh, Jacoby Creek marsh, Mad River Slough marsh, and Manila marsh. These marshesprovide important habitat for marsh-dependent species, such as Humboldt Bay Owl’s Clover(Castilleja ambigua), Western Snowy Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus), and Steelhead(Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Salt marshes classification of the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative geography covers the northern Outer Banks (and extreme southeastern Virginia, Back Bay area) south through NC, SC, and Georgia to approximately Sapelo Island. The marsh classification is derived from Landsat 8 OLI imagery acquired in May 14-19, 2014. This georeferenced imagery was atmospherically corrected, mosaicked, and water masked prior to deriving a set of three Normalize Difference Indices (NDX) bands: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Normalized Difference Soil Index (NDSI). Prospective salt marshes and associated tidal non-forested wetlands were classified using object-oriented...

The marsh-forest boundary in the Chesapeake Bay was determined by geoprocessing high-resolution (1 square meter) land use and land cover data sets. Perpendicular transects were cast at standard intervals (30 meters) along the boundary within a GIS by repurposing the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) Version 5.0, an ArcGIS extension developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Average and maximum slope values were assigned to each transect from surface elevation data. The same values were also provided as points at the center of the transect where it crossed over the boundary. The slope values across the marsh-forest transition zone and at the boundary itself provide comprehensive data layers for local, state,...
