These data contain concentrations of major and trace elements in quality-assurance samples. These are the machine-readable versions of Tables 2–5 from the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report, Distribution of Mining Related Trace Elements in Streambed and Floodplain Sediment along the Middle Big River and Tributaries in the Southeast Missouri Barite District, 2012-15 (Smith and Schumacher, 2018). Table_2 contains concentrations of major and trace elements in regular and replicate streambed-sediment samples in samples BR-02 and BR-04. Each sample was sieved and analyzed for concentrations within the less than 2-, less than 0.250-, and less than 0.063-mm size fraction. Averaged relative percent...

These data contain concentrations of trace elements in unsieved flood-plain samples collected along tributaries draining the Washington County Barite District. This is the machine-readable version of Table 9 from the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report, Distribution of Mining Related Trace Elements in Streambed and Floodplain Sediment along the Middle Big River and Tributaries in the Southeast Missouri Barite District, 2012-15 (Smith and Schumacher, 2018).

These data contain concentrations of trace elements in various size fractions (less than 0.063 millimeters, 0.063 to 0.250 millimeters, 0.250 to 2 millimeters, and greater than 2 millimeters) of flood-plain core samples analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (laboratory) and x-ray fluorescence (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). This is the machine-readable version of Table 6 from the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report, Distribution of Mining Related Trace Elements in Streambed and Floodplain Sediment along the Middle Big River and Tributaries in the Southeast Missouri Barite District, 2012-15 (Smith and Schumacher, 2018).

Historic mining activity in the Old Lead Belt has led to substantial influx of lead and zinc mining waste into the channel of the Big River in southeastern Missouri. The primary objectives of this data collection was to determine the depth of heavy-metal contamination at five gravel bars along the Big River to verify and supplement findings by Pavlowsky and Owen (2010). A secondary objective of the study was to develop and implement methods for use in other Natural Resource Damage Assessment projects, such as the Tri-State Mining District (TSMD) project (Smith, 2016). This data was collected in cooperation with the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute, Missouri State University, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife...

These data contains location information for the various sites covered in the data release. Locations include streambed-sediment, flood-plain core, and flood-plain sediment sampling locations along the Big River, Maddin Creek, Mineral Fork Creek, Old Mines Creek, Mill Creek, and Dry Creek. This is the machine-readable version of Table 1 from the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report, Distribution of Mining Related Trace Elements in Streambed and Floodplain Sediment along the Middle Big River and Tributaries in the Southeast Missouri Barite District, 2012-15 (Smith and Schumacher, 2018).

These data contain concentrations of select trace elements in samples collected on the flood plain from flood deposits from the December 2015 flood and underlying soils. All samples were analyzed by x-ray fluorescence. This is the machine-readable version of Table 10 from the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report, Distribution of Mining Related Trace Elements in Streambed and Floodplain Sediment along the Middle Big River and Tributaries in the Southeast Missouri Barite District, 2012-15 (Smith and Schumacher, 2018).

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release contains locations and concentrations of metals in various size fractions in floodplain-core, streambed-sediment samples, and sediment deposited on the flood plain from the December 2015 flood and underlying soils collected from along the Middle Big River and tributaries in the Southeast Missouri Barite District from 2012 to 2015. All samples were analyzed either by inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or x-ray fluorescence (XRF). Concentrations of metals in quality-assurance samples are also presented to evaluate the effect of sample splitting and compare the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and USGS Missouri Water Science Center XRF units....
