This data release supports interpretations of field-observed root distributions within a shallow landslide headscarp (CB1) located below Mettman Ridge within the Oregon Coast Range, approximately 15 km northeast of Coos Bay, Oregon, USA. (Schmidt_2021_CB1_topo_far.png and Schmidt_2021_CB1_topo_close.png). Root species, diameter (greater than or equal to 1 mm), general orientation relative to the slide scarp, and depth below ground surface were characterized immediately following landsliding in response to large-magnitude precipitation in November 1996 which triggered thousands of landslides within the area (Montgomery and others, 2009). The enclosed data includes: (1) tests of root-thread failure as a function of...

As part of a collaborative study with the City of Raleigh, North Carolina, the U.S. Geological Survey is assessing streambank erosion potential in selected stream reaches throughout the Greater Raleigh metropolitan area. Rapid field measurement techniques were used to assess streambank stability at 124 stream segments between January and March 2022. Field data were collected using the Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI) and Near Bank Stress (NBS) assessment methods (Rosgen, 2001; Rosgen and others, 2008) as well as the Rapid Geomorphic Assessment (RGA) method (Simon and others, 2007). This Data Release contains a dataset with all stream site information, field measurements, and streambank stability assessment results;...

This data release contains California Department of Water Resources borehole data that were regularized by the US Geological Survey. The dataset contains borehole lithologic data, and geospatial data of water wells in the Hat Creek basin California, located east of Mount Shasta in northern California. The borehole dataset is released as an excel table and a shapefile and includes (1) individual borehole location, and (2) downhole lithologic interval data derived from well drillers’ lithology logs. The geospatial data consists of a point feature class that is a 2-dimensional representation of the locations of Hat Creek basin well logs.

The nature of carbon (C) cycling in the vadose zone where groundwater is in contact with abundant gas-filled voids is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to trace C cycling in a karst landscape using stable-C isotopes, with emphasis on a shallow groundwater flow path through the soil, to an underlying cave, and to the spring outlet of a cave stream in the Ozark Plateaus of northwestern Arkansas. Blowing Spring Cave (BSC) occurs in the Springfield Plateau of the Ozark Plateaus. The cave passage is relatively horizontal, the entrance to BSC is a spring outlet, and no other human-sized entrances into the cave are known to occur. Soils generally are less than 2 to 3 meters thick above the cave and dominated...

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), downhole nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and manual permafrost-probe measurements were used to quantify permafrost characteristics along transects within several catchments in interior Alaska in late summer 2016 and 2017. Geophysical sites were chosen to coincide with additional soil, hydrologic, and geochemical measurements adjacent to various low-order streams and tributaries in a mix of burned and unburned watersheds in both silty and rocky environments. Data were collected in support of the Striegl-01 NASA ABoVE project, "Vulnerability of inland waters and the aquatic carbon cycle to changing permafrost and climate across boreal northwestern North America." Additional...

This dataset contains information regarding the acreages of land currently (as of 2004) enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) distributed by county and the year the CRP contract was initiated (1987-2004, excluding 1994 and 1995). Additionally, it contains total acreages of land enrolled in the CRP distributed by county and the contract year (1987-2003). USDA Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them safeguard environmentally sensitive land. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resource-conserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat. In return, FSA...

Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene in soil-gas measured using solid ploymer samplers at the Vienna Wells site, Vienna, deployed from August 9, 2015 to June 27, 2016. Also contains information on the depth below ground surface of the passive sampler. These data support the following publication: Wilson, J.L., Samaranayake, V.A., Limmer, M.A., Schumacher, J.G., Burken, J.G., 2017, Contaminant Gradients in Trees: Directional Tree Coring Reveals Boundaries of Soil and Soil-Gas Contamination with Potential Applications in Vapor Intrusion Assessment: Environmental Science and Technology, Just Accepted Manuscript. DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.7b03466.

Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in interpolated soil surface boundary points at the Vienna Wells Site: Maries County, Missouri. This boundary is composed of points with an assumed PCE concentration of 11 micrograms per kilogram (detection limit) and was used with the soil sample dataset (doi: 10.5066/F71835D8) to create an interpolated surface. These data support the following publication: Wilson, J.L., Samaranayake, V.A., Limmer, M.A., Schumacher, J.G., Burken, J.G., 2017, Contaminant Gradients in Trees: Directional Tree Coring Reveals Boundaries of Soil and Soil-Gas Contamination with Potential Applications in Vapor Intrusion Assessment: Environmental Science and Technology, Just Accepted Manuscript....
Geophysical measurements were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at two sites in Interior Alaska in 2019 and 2020 for the purposes of imaging permafrost structure and quantifying variations in subsurface moisture content in relation to thaw features. In September 2019, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and downhole nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data were used to quantify permafrost characteristics across the shorelines of Big Trail Lake, a thermokarst lake outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. Three 222 m ERT survey lines were collected perpendicular to the North, East, and South shorelines, and two 110 m lines were collected parallel to the southeast and northeast shorelines. Models of electrical resistivity...

Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in points from interpolated tetrachloroethylene soil data gridded at a 1-m interval at the Vienna Wells site, Vienna, Missouri, 2012-2015. These data were extracted at 1-meter intervals from interpolating published soil data (doi: https://doi.org/10.5066/F71835D8), which was created using the inverse-distance weighting method at a 1-meter interval, the mean PCE concentration at each location, a power of 2, and minimum and maximum neighbor search of 10 and 15. These data support the following publication: Wilson, J.L., Samaranayake, V.A., Limmer, M.A., Schumacher, J.G., Burken, J.G., 2017, Contaminant Gradients in Trees: Directional Tree Coring Reveals Boundaries of Soil...
