This release is for data on Zinc concentrations and isotopic signatures of an aquatic insect (mayfly, Baetis tricaudatus). Mayflies were exposed to an aqueous zinc concentration gradient in a laboratory experiment. Zinc concentrations were measured in water, algae (mayfly food), and different mayfly lifestages. Natural abundances of carbon and nitrogen isotopes were also measured in different life stages. This data set includes on Zinc data. Isotope data are provided in a separate file. The abstract for a journal article explaining the results of the experiment follows below: Insect metamorphosis often results in substantial chemical changes that can fractionate isotopes and alter contaminant concentrations. All samples were collected within a 9km stretch of the Santa Fe River in northern Florida, USA. In 2019 and 2020 we sampled claw tissue from Macrochelys suwanniensis, Chelydra serpentina, and Trachemys scripta scripta, from three different sampling locations. We collected Vegetation and potential prey tissue samples within close proximity of turtle captures from two of the three capture locations. All tissues were used for stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis.

Geochemical data are reported for surface sediments and long sediment cores from Bellingham Bay, Whatcom County, Washington, collected in early February 2020 after flood conditions on the Nooksack River. Data include total organic carbon content (TOC), carbonate content (CaCO3), ratios of stable carbon 13/12 isotopes (d13C), ratios of total carbon to total nitrogen (C:N), short-lived cosmogenic radionuclide activities (Beryllium-7, Cesium-137, and excess Lead-210), and elemental chemistry.

Ice core from Greenland was melted, filtered, and homogenized. Its stable hydrogen (δ2H) and oxygen (δ18O) isotopic compositions were adjusted to approximately match those of USGS46 ice core water (δ2H = –235.8 ‰ and δ18O = –29.80 ‰). This isotopic reference water, USGS46a, was loaded into glass ampules, sealed, autoclaved to eliminate biological activity, and calibrated by dual-inlet isotope-ratio mass spectrometry and laser absorption spectrometry. USGS46a is intended as one of two secondary isotopic reference waters for daily normalization of stable hydrogen and stable oxygen isotopic analysis of water with a mass spectrometer or a laser absorption spectrometer. The measured δ2H and δ18O values of USGS46a reference...

Terrain variables extracted from bathymetry were used in combination with stable isotope datasets to construct geospatially-explicit isoscapes that predicted variation in carbon and nitrogen isotopes across the canyon-slope seascape, providing insights into the distribution and flow of energy resources, relevant to understanding whole community function.

Despite being one of the most prevalent forms of consumerism in ecological communities, parasitism has largely been excluded from food-web models. Stable isotope analysis of consumers and their diets has been widely used in the study of food-webs for decades. However, the amount of information regarding parasite stable isotope ecology is limited, restricting the ability of ecologists to use stable isotope analysis to study parasites in food-webs. This study took advantage of distinct differences in the feeding ecology and trophic position of different species of fish known to host the same common micropredatory gnathiid isopod, to study the effects of host stable isotope ecology on that of the associated micropredator....

Chemosynthetic environments support distinct benthic communities capable of utilizing reduced chemical compounds for nutrition. Hundreds of methane seeps have been documented along the U.S. Atlantic margin (USAM), and detailed investigations at a few seeps have revealed distinct environments containing mussels, microbial mats, authigenic carbonates, and soft sediments. The dominant mussel Bathymodiolus childressi contains methanotrophic endosymbionts but is also capable of filter feeding. We used SIA (δ13C, δ 5N, and δ34S) and an isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) to estimate resource contribution to B. childressi and characterize food webs at two seep sites (Baltimore Seep: 400 m and Norfolk Seep: 1500 m depths) along...

Elemental compositions are reported for the fine fraction of surface sediments from Bellingham Bay (June 2017 and March 2019) and in the fine fraction of streambank sediment from the Nooksack River (September 2017, March 2019, September 2019), Squalicum Creek (March and September 2019), Whatcom Creek (March and September 2019), and Padden Creek (March and September 2019). Major oxide percentages are reported in Nooksack River fine sediment collected in September 2017. Ancillary data for sediment collected during 2017 and 2019 from Bellingham Bay, Nooksack River, and small creeks include: percent weights of gravel, sand, and fines; total organic carbon content (TOC); carbonate content (CaCO3); ratios of stable carbon...

The primary objective of this study was to assess deepsea food web structure and trophic niches in Baltimore and Norfolk canyons, the adjacent slopes, and chemosynthetic seeps along the mid-Atlantic margin using stable isotope analyses (SIA) and isotope niche width analysis. We hypothesized that the isotopic compositions of canyon versus slope fauna would be distinct, given differences in the physics and chemistry of the canyons and slopes and resulting quality and quantity of the organic matter available to the benthos. These differences should be evident across taxa and among and within feeding groups. We also used SIA to estimate trophic positions of invertebrates and fishes and to examine changes in trophic...

This dataset includes total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and total carbon (TC) concentrations as well as δ15N and δ13C composition, and overall C:N:P stoichiometry for adult emergent Diptera from the Colorado River, Grand Canyon, AZ. The samples were collected before and after a fire and subsequent storm occurred in the Shinumo Watershed, a tributary to the Colorado River in Northern Arizona. Diptera specimens were collected via light traps placed on the banks of the Colorado River 25 miles above and 25 miles below Shinumo Creek (river miles 85-135) between 2013 and 2015. This data series contains Diptera TP concentrations (in mg P per mg Diptera) for 44 samples from 11 location/date combinations. We also...

Insect metamorphosis often results in substantial chemical changes that can fractionate isotopes and alter contaminant concentrations. We exposed larval mayflies (Baetis tricaudatus) to an aqueous zinc gradient (3-340 µg Zn/l) and measured the change in zinc tissue concentrations at different stages of metamorphosis. We also measured changes in stable isotopes (δ15N and δ13C) in unexposed B. tricaudatus. Zinc concentrations in larvae were positively related to aqueous zinc, increasing 9-fold across the exposure gradient. Zinc concentrations in adults were also positively related to aqueous concentrations, but were 7-fold lower than larvae. However, this relationship varied according to adult substage (subimago vs...

This study was initiated to provide baseline data and to determine the utility of stable isotope analysis to evaluate the foraging strategies of an opportunistic reptile predator. Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen were evaluated from multiple tissues from terrapin populations to determine spatial or temporal variations in resource use within mangrove habitats in Southern Florida. We sampled Diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) and potential resources within mainland and island habitats, and evaluated their δ13C and δ15N values. We fit linear regression models to determine the best predictors of isotopic values for both terrapins and their prey, and SIBER analysis to examine terrapin isotopic niche...
