In 1998, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Fisheries Independent Monitoring (FIM) program began a long-term monitoring effort of key reef fish populations in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The purpose of the Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project (CREMP) is to monitor the status and trends of selected reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary(FKNMS). CREMP assessments have been conducted annually at fixed sites since 1996 and data collected provides information on the temporal changes in benthic cover and diversity of stony corals and associated marine flora and fauna. Phytoplankton data for samples collected at twelve large river sites throughout the United States, June through October 2019

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data for samples collected from twelve large river sites throughout the United States, from June through October 2019. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected as part of a National Water Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin occurrence in the Nation's large rivers. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level with both abundance (reported as both natural units and cells) and biovolume reported.

Diversity relationships among taxonomic groups in recovering and restored forests

Our objective was to reexamine the definition and use of surrogates in biodiversity studies of disturbed ecological communities. To this end, we examined diversity and community structure in recovering (pollution damaged) and restored (via lining, fertilizing, seeding, and planting) forests in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence zone near Sudbury Ontario, Canada. The relationships among taxonomic groups were determined using correlations between Shannon diversity and species richness. Synonymies, diagnoses, descriptions, illustrations, an identification key and meristic frequency tables are provided for all species of Lonchopisthus. Most of the skeletal anatomy of L. higmani is also illustrated. A new jawfish, Lonchopisthus ancistrus n. sp., is described from the Gulf of Mexico and off Honduras based on 21 specimens 41‒89 mm standard length (SL). Phytoplankton Species Composition, Abundance and Cell Size in San Francisco Bay: Microscopic Analyses of USGS Samples Collected 1992-2014

This Data Release makes available measurements of phytoplankton species composition, abundance and cell size made on samples collected in San Francisco Bay (CA) from April 1992 through March 2014. Phytoplankton samples were collected at 31 stations along a 145-km transect where the variability of salinity, temperature, turbidity and nutrient concentrations reflected a broad range of environmental factors that regulate phytoplankton growth and abundance (map of sampling locations is available on the project website at: https://sfbay.wr.usgs.gov/access/wqdata/overview/wherewhen/stnmap.html). North American Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Digital Reference Collection

Our goal for creating this digital reference collection is to provide regional aquatic biology labs with a graphic tool to aid in the identification and verification of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Most aquatic labs possess a collection of ‘reference’ specimens so that technicians/ taxonomists may compare and confirm specimens collected from a sample with expertly identified and verified type specimens of a particular taxa type. Unfortunately, specimens in these collections are often delicate and subject to damage, eventually rendering them unusable for verification purposes.
