This dataset was last updated 02/2017. This version includes a new tidal restrictions metric that assesses the effect of undersized culverts and bridges on tidal regime. The previous version (3.1) was updated on 05/2016 by incorporating a revised version of the land cover classification, DSLland Version 3.1, developed by UMass, which included the addition of The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast lakes and ponds classification. This dataset depicts the ecological integrity of locations (represented by 30 m grid cells) throughout the northeastern United States based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. Ecological integrity is defined as the ability of an area (e.g., local site or landscape) to...

It is part of a national network of public-private partnerships — known as Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs, http://www.fws.gov/science/shc/lcc.html) — that work collaboratively across jurisdictions and political boundaries to leverage resources and share science capacity. The Great Plains LCC identifies science priorities for the region and helps foster science that addresses these priorities to support...

Background information.—Historically, the Powell River supported abundant and diverse populations of freshwater mussels. In recent decades, mussel density and species richness have declined and many freshwater mussel species are listed as either State or Federally threatened or endangered species. Environmental degradation from coal mining has been identified as one of the drivers of this decline. An example is the 1996 Lone Mountain slurry spill that directly affected mussel populations, as well as their host fish species. Freshwater mussels feed by filtering small particles from water, thereby improving water quality and providing an essential ecosystem service in rivers and streams. Mussels also serve as a food...

WWF's Global 200 is a first attempt to identify a set of ecoregions whose conservation would achieve the goal of saving a broad diversity of the Earth's ecosystems. These ecoregions include those with exceptional levels of biodiversity, such as high species richness or endemism, or those with unusual ecological or evolutionary phenomena. Tropical rain forests deservedly garner much conservation attention, as they may contain half of the world's species. However, a comprehensive strategy for conserving global biodiversity must strive to include the other 50 percent of species and habitats, such that all species and the distinctive ecosystems that support them are conserved. Habitats like tropical dry forests, tundra,...

This dataset depicts Ecosystems of Belize - version 2004. This dataset is an update from the 2001 Belize Ecosystems Map (Meerman & Sabido, 2001). This 2004 version has been enhanced using a substantial set of new data. The data quality of the 2004 version has greatly improved over the 2001 version. Marine habitat data were much improved. The classification still follows the UNESCO system developed for the Central American Ecosystems Map and is thus completely consistent with that product. Also, for the first time, metadata are included.
Range managers in the Southwestern States are increasingly being required to develop management strategies that take into consideration the conservation of wildlife populations. However, information on many aspects of the fundamental biology and impacts of grazing on individual species is still lacking in the scientific and government literature. This report documents a project designed to assemble this information for terrestrial wildlife in Arizona and New Mexico that have the potential to be negatively impacted by grazing or range management practices. To achieve this, a two-stage panel process was developed that employed a variety of wildlife experts to create a list of potentially vulnerable species and to...

Land facets were created by combining 3 rasters: elevation (seven 600-m bands), soil orders (11 classes) and slope (3 breaks) to produce a 270-m resolution grid. 162 land facets were created, ranging in size from over 9 million hectares in the plateaus of the Columbia Plateau to less than 1,000 hectares in steep, high elevation habitats. These 162 facets were stratified by ecoregions to produce 794 ecofacets which underlie the spatial distribution of biodiversity and the region’s biological richness. Soil Order: Soil orders reflect both geology and time and are based largely on soil forming processes, including exposure to climatic factors and biological processes, as indicated by the presence or absence of major...

Results of the population growth model developed by the Tennessee Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, 2008, converted to percent projected developed landcover in the year 2040. Spatial growth model was developed using population growth projections from the University of Tennessee Center for Business and Economic Research (UT-CBER), county urban growth boundaries, 2000 census blocks, and various ancillary datasets.
