The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that low-lying atolls (ring-shaped islands or island chains made of coral) in the Pacific Ocean are extremely vulnerable to high tide events (“king tides”), storm surge, tsunamis, and sea-level rise. The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) spreads over 29 atolls and has a population of over 50,000 people with homes and communities that may be threatened by these climate change-related events. Policy makers, planners, and others within RMI are faced with decisions about how to prepare for the future and need scientific data and information about the vulnerability of Pacific Islands to potential climate change impacts like sea-level rise. Topographic and bathymetric...

Accurate estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) is essential for assessments of water balance and hydrologic responses to forest restoration treatments in uplands adjacent to the Desert LCC. As part of the Four Forests Restoration Initiative, a new paired watershed study is being planned to assess the hydrologic effects of mechanically thinning and restoring a more frequent fire regime to the ponderosa pine forests of Arizona. Water and energy balances will be measured and modeled in these paired watersheds to help inform and better plan for the hydrologic responses of future forest restoration actions. Researchers at Northern Arizona University have collected six years of eddy covariance measurements of ET in the...

The coastal areas of the Yukon and Kuskokwim River Deltas (YKD) are among the most productive in Alaska. The fish, wildlife, and plant resources have been an integral part of communities in this region for thousands of years. Some of the same traits that make it so productive also make it a challenging place to live and work. To better understand and plan for coastal erosion and storm surges, or plan for roads and trails, information about elevation patterns on the YKD are needed. Current topographic maps have limited value given the flatness of the area. A group of partners worked together with USGS to collect elevation information and create a map that will reveal a portion of the delta’s topography. Kodiak Mapping...
