Our mission is to develop and maintain a cost-effective, central information source and inventory of the locations, biology, and status of all threatened, endangered, rare, and at-risk plants and animals in Nevada. We use the best available biological data to continually evaluate conservation priorities for over 700 native animals, plants, and vegetation types, focusing on those that are at greatest risk of extinction or serious decline. As a non-regulatory, independent resource for scientifically objective data, environmental review, and technical assistance and expertise, we support the needs of diverse planning, conservation management, research, education, and economic development activities in Nevada. The...

La Soufrière Volcano is a 1,220 m high stratovolcano that occupies the northern half of the island of St. Vincent, Lesser Antilles, Eastern Caribbean. It has a long history of explosive and sometimes devastating eruptions. Beginning in December 2020 and ending in April 2021, La Soufrière Volcano produced a Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI) 4 eruption that greatly impacted the landscape, communities, and infrastructure on the island of St. Vincent. The eruption produced intense ash plumes, heavy ashfall, and pyroclastic flows down several river valleys. During and following the eruption, destructive lahars (volcanic mudflows) impacted rivers valleys and coastal communities for months. The USGS-USAID Volcano Disaster...
Accurate estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) is essential for assessments of water balance and hydrologic responses to forest restoration treatments in uplands adjacent to the Desert LCC. As part of the Four Forests Restoration Initiative, a new paired watershed study is being planned to assess the hydrologic effects of mechanically thinning and restoring a more frequent fire regime to the ponderosa pine forests of Arizona. Water and energy balances will be measured and modeled in these paired watersheds to help inform and better plan for the hydrologic responses of future forest restoration actions. Researchers at Northern Arizona University have collected six years of eddy covariance measurements of ET in the...

This portion of the USGS data release presents topography data collected during surveys performed in the Columbia River littoral cell, Washington and Oregon, in 2018 (USGS Field Activity Number 2018-652-FA). Topographic profiles were collected by walking along survey lines with global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers mounted on backpacks. Prior to data collection, vertical distances between the GNSS antennas and the ground were measured using a tape measure. Hand-held data collectors were used to log raw data and display navigational information allowing surveyors to navigate survey lines spaced at 100- to 1000-m intervals along the beach. Profiles were surveyed from the landward edge of the study area...

Coastal resources are increasingly impacted by erosion, extreme weather events, sea-level rise, tidal flooding, and other potential hazards related to climate change. These hazards have varying impacts on coastal landscapes due to the numerous geologic, oceanographic, ecological, and socioeconomic factors that exist at a given location. Here, an assessment framework is introduced that synthesizes existing datasets describing the variability of the landscape and hazards that may act on it to evaluate the likelihood of coastal change along the U.S coastline within the coming decade. The pilot study, conducted in the Northeastern U.S. (Maine to Virginia), is comprised of datasets derived from a variety of federal,...

These data include groundwater-level data from 59 wells measured from July to August 2017. Measured groundwater data are also available from the USGS National Water Information System (U.S. Geological Survey, 2018) Well locations were selected from three sources: previously reported sites (Kresse and Hays, 2009), site reconnaissance, and driller’s logs obtained from the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission driller database. Understanding how sea-level rise will affect coastal landforms and the species and habitats they support is critical for crafting approaches that balance the needs of humans and native species. Given this increasing need to forecast sea-level rise effects on barrier islands in the near and long terms, we are developing Bayesian networks to evaluate and to forecast the cascading effects of sea-level rise on shoreline change, barrier island state, and piping plover habitat availability. We use publicly available data products, such as lidar, orthophotography, and geomorphic feature sets derived from those, to extract metrics of barrier island characteristics at consistent sampling distances. The metrics are then incorporated...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board, has compiled a series of geospatial datasets for Puerto Rico to be implemented into the USGS StreamStats application (https://streamstats.usgs.gov/ss/). These geospatial datasets, along with basin characteristics datasets for Puerto Rico published as a separate USGS data release (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9HK9SSQ), were used to delineate watersheds and develop the peak-flow and low-flow regression equations used by StreamStats. The geospatial dataset described herein are the digital elevation model rasters from NED, at a 10-m resolution, elevations in centimeters. Data are partitioned into four TIFF files, one for...

This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the Sunbury 30 x 60 minute quadrangle Pennsylvania. It also covers part of the Delaware River Basin. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter and 3-meter resolution Lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2013 and 2018 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data are projected in North America Datum (NAD) UTM Zone 18 North. This representation illustrates the terrain as a hillshade with contrast adjusted...

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) Program Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element has overseen the collection, processing, and serving of bathymetric data since 1989. A systemic data collection for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) was completed in 2010. Water depth in aquatic systems is important for describing the physical characteristics of a river. Bathymetric maps are used for conducting spatial inventories of the aquatic habitat and detecting bed and elevation changes due to sedimentation. Bathymetric data is widely used, specifically for studies of water level management alternatives, modeling navigation impacts and hydraulic conditions, and environmental...

Using high-resolution sonar technologies with geographic information systems (GIS) and object based image analysis, benthic habitats of the Illinois River will be interpreted to support Asian carp research, monitoring and control. The entire study plan will consist of data collection and analysis of the Brandon, Dresden, Starved Rock, Marseilles, Peoria, La Grange and Alton reaches of the Illinois River. Reaches with larger aquatic areas (Peoria, La Grange and Alton), will have priority areas and backwaters collected and analyzed first.

This dataset represents elevation for the Northern U.S. and Canada. This Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was created by mosaicing two datasets: 1. U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) 30 meter National Elevation Dataset (NED) , ~1 arc-second data that is updated over large areas by integrating the 10 meter or better source data (where available), re-sampled to 1 arc-second. 2. The Canadian Digital Elevation Data, Level 1 (CDED1) The Center of Topographic Information (CTI) jointly produces the CDED with federal, provincial, and territorial government agencies as well as the private sector. The CDED consists of an ordered array of ground or reflective surface elevations, recorded in meters, at regularly spaced intervals....
