Despite the relationship between urbanization, energy use and CO2 emissions has been extensively studied in recent years, little attention has been paid to differences in development stages or income levels. Most previous studies have implicitly assumed that the impact of urbanization is homogenous for all countries. This assumption can be questionable as there are many characteristic differences among countries of different levels of affluence. This paper investigates empirically the effects of urbanization on energy use and CO2 emissions with consideration of the different development stages. Using the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology (STIRPAT) model and a balanced panel...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set represents U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) historical Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) from the 1970's that has been refined with 1990 population density at the block group level to indicate new residential development representative of the 1990's. Any area having a population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile had been re-classified as "urban" land in this data set.
The cumulative effects problem in natural resource management and land use planning stems from the difficulty of demonstrating that while each single land use change results in a negligible impact, the accumulation of these individual changes over time and within a landscape or region may constitute a major impact. This paper details a general approach to estimate the cumulative effects of land use change on wildlife habitat using Summit County, CO, USA as a case study. Our approach is based on a functional relationship between effect on habitat and distance from development. Within this building-effect distance, habitat is assumed to be degraded, producing a disturbance zone. We sum the total area within the disturbance...
This paper approximates the emissions rebound effects' associated with substituting expensive and GHG emitting natural gas (LNG) power plants, with apparently cheaper and lower emitting nuclear plant. It then evaluates the effect this has on economy wide electricity use as well as net GHG emissions changes. The analysis is undertaken by combining aspects of an input-output model with an optimizing energy systems model. The scope of the case study is limited to the effects of the electricity sector (and its emissions) on the Korean economy from 2005 to 2030. Its primary basis (in terms of data and assumptions) is the recent national Basic Plan for Long-Term Electricity Supply and Demand (KPX, 2006).(2) The cases...

Opportunities to improve the ecological functioning of agricultural landscapes in the U.S. Midwest exist, and could include the restoration of native plant communities to improve biodiversity or the modification of agricultural production systems to enhance the provisioning of ecosystem services to society. To be most effective in achieving these goals, restoration efforts require knowledge of past conditions and drivers of change. We assessed landscape change in the Clear Creek, Iowa watershed from 1940 to 2002 using five metrics derived from aerial photos: land cover composition and configuration, housing density and spatial pattern, and stream sinuosity. Major cover changes in the watershed included increases...

The U.S. Geological Survey’s SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) for the Southeastern United States was used to simulate changes in total nitrogen, total phosphorus and suspended sediment load in streams under two scenarios: (1) where all forests are urbanized and (2) where all forests are urbanized and runoff is adjusted based on a non-forested landscape. This data release includes model input not published with the original model and used for scenario simulations, and model output for total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and suspended sediment under baseline conditions, scenario (1), and scenario (2). Original model input, output, and shapefiles are available (Roland and Hoos, 2020,...

The dataset accompanies Figures 2–4 of Matchett and Fleskes (2018) and therein the subject data are referenced as "Table A1". Data summarize peak abundance (km2) of Central Valley waterbird habitats (i.e., wetland and flooded cropland types) that are available between August and April (of the following year) for each of 17 projected scenarios by planning basin, scenario, and habitat. Area of each habitat for each scenario-basin combination is provided for the month when the most area of the respective habitat is typically flooded and available for waterbird use (i.e., January for all wetlands and winter-flooded rice and corn, and September for other winter-flooded crops in Tulare Basin). The dataset also includes...

This dataset represents the extent of urbanization (for the year indicated) predicted by the model SLEUTH, developed by Dr. Keith C. Clarke, at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Department of Geography and modified by David I. Donato of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Eastern Geographic Science Center (EGSC). Further model modification and implementation was performed at the Biodiversity and Spatial Information Center at North Carolina State University. Purpose: Urban growth probability extents throughout the 21st century for the Southeast Regional Assessment Project, which encompasses the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee...

This product consists of 29 datasets of tabular data and associated metadata for watershed characteristics of 1,530 study sites of the Surface Water Trends (SWT) project of the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Water Quality Program (NWQP). The project is conducting national studies of trends in water quality of streams and rivers for periods ranging from 10 to 40 years, between 1972 and 2012. The data here include both static and time-series characteristics. Static data include primarily physical characteristics which have changed little over this period, such as geology, soils, and topography. Time-series data represent characteristics which may or may not have changed over time, such as land use, agricultural...

This dataset describes streamflow and precipitation event statistics for four watersheds located in Clarksburg, Maryland, USA. Streamflow and precipitation events were identified from fourteen years of sub-daily (5- and 15-minute) monitoring data from October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2018. A 6-hour inter-event window was used to define discrete streamflow and precipitation events. The following streamflow metrics were calculated for each event area normalized peak streamflow, runoff yield, runoff ratio, streamflow duration, time to peak, and rise rate. Precipitation event metrics include total precipitation depth and precipitation event duration.

This map layer shows major ports in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A port is a city, town, or urban area with a harbor where ships load or unload. This is a revised version of the July 2012 map layer.

The connectivity result files from Circuitscape represent the "adjusted cumulative current density" flowing across the landscape for each of several species, at a 90-meter resolution across the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative region. Rasters are classified using quantiles with 20 categories (each 5% of region) to integer scores from 1-20. 1 = lowest 5% of the landscape, 20= top 5% of landscape Expert opinion was used to define a resistance surface for each of the target animals, with higher resistance representing map units expected to be more difficult and dangerous for species to move through. A set of nodes for each species, with node points indicating center locations for potential source populations,...

This data set includes input data for the development of regression models to predict chloride from specific conductance (SC) data at 56 U. S. Geological Survey water quality monitoring stations in the eastern United States. Each site has 20 or more simultaneous observations of SC and chloride. Data were downloaded from the National Water Information System (NWIS) using the R package dataRetrieval. Datasets for each site were evaluated and outliers were removed prior to the development of the regression model. This file contains only the final input dataset for the regression models. Please refer to Moore and others (in review) for more details. Moore, J., R. Fanelli, and A. Sekellick. In review. High-frequency...
This dataset is based on the output from a project funded by the California Landscape Conservation Cooperative: “Decision support for climate change adaptation and fire management strategies for at risk species in southern California”. The potential distribution of Ceanothus verrucosus was modeled using a MaxEnt species distribution model using recent and future climate data with presence records from the San Diego Natural History Museum. Species distributions were modeled only for the South Coast Ecoregion in California, USA as this is where management options and climate change adaptation possibilities are currently being examined for the species. Recent climate data were based on the Parameter-Elevation Regressions...
