The Baca National Wildlife Refuge is located in the San Luis Valley of South-central Colorado on the western flank of the Sangre de Cristo massif, northwest of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Wildlife managers at the refuge are tasked with protecting two fish species of special concern, the Rio Grande Chub (Gila pandora) and the Rio Grande Sucker (Catostomus plebeius). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected surface water data with Stream Temperature, Intermittency, and Conductivity (STIC) instruments deployed at the Baca NWR from 2016–2019. STIC instruments are unique for this type of investigation for the purpose of simultaneously collecting temperature data and an electrical resistance signal to determine...

In 2021 and 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR), drilled and constructed well SEP 16 (431900112593601) approximately 6 miles south-southeast of Big Southern Butte in Butte County, Idaho. The purpose of the well installation was to collect geologic, geophysical, and hydrologic data. On July 13, 2022, the USGS Idaho National Laboratory Project Office (INLPO) collected select geophysical logs within the cased well including natural gamma, neutron, neutron porosity, and gamma-gamma dual density logs. Gyroscopic deviation data were also collected during geophysical surveying to account for the horizontal and vertical displacement of the well. On...

From the 2015 water year, the U.S. Geological Survey has collected data to develop a surrogate model for estimating real-time fine sediment particles concentration and loads at Upper Truckee River at South Lake Tahoe, CA (USGS site number: 10336610). Fine sediment particles represent a size range from 0.5-16.0 microns in suspended sediment and are the leading contributor of clarity reduction in Lake Tahoe. Model archive summaries document fine sediment particle surrogate models for the real-time calculation of fine sediment particles concentration at the Upper Truckee River at South Lake Tahoe, California. The methods used to produce the surrogate models follow U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) protocols as referenced...

The sampling of the riverine-to-marine transect (Penobscot River, Penobscot Bay, and the Gulf of Maine) took place in 2008. Water samples were collected and filtered in the field using 0.45 micrometer capsule filters (Versapor membrane), silicon tubing, and a peristaltic pump. Water samples were then shipped on ice to the U.S. Geological Survey in Boulder, Colorado and chilled to approximately 4 degrees Celsius until analysis. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was separated into fractions by an isolation method that passes aqueous sample through Amberlite XAD8 and XAD4 resins using low pressure liquid chromatography. The hydrophobic organic acid (HPOA) fraction is the eluate from the XAD8 fractionation column and the...

Arundo donax (Arundo Cane) is an invasive perennial reed that can grow more than 30 feet tall and has become established in riparian zones along rivers throughout the southwestern United States. It grows in thick stands, readily displaces native riparian habitat, and provides no habitat or food for native species in the ecosystems it disrupts (McWilliams, 2004). The Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) has been directed to develop and implement a program to eradicate Arundo Cane along the entire 1,255 mile length of the Rio Grande in Texas (Texas Senate Bill 1734). The TSSWCB has been using an ecosystem-based approach that integrates the use of biological, chemical, mechanical, and cultural controls...
