Note: This data release has been revised. Find version 2.0 here: https://doi.org/10.5066/F75H7FH3. Groundwater withdrawal estimates from 1913-2010 for the Death Valley regional groundwater flow system (DVRFS) are compiled in a Microsoft® Access database. This database updates two previously published databases (Moreo and others, 2003; Moreo and Justet, 2008). A total of about 38,000 acre-feet of groundwater was withdrawn from the DVRFS in 2010, of which 47 percent was used for irrigation, 22 percent for domestic, and 31 percent for public supply, commercial, and mining activities. The updated database was compiled to support ongoing efforts to model groundwater flow in the DVRFS. References cited: Moreo, M.T.,...
This data release contains compiled historical groundwater-withdrawal data for the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida from 1925 to 2018. Most groundwater-withdrawals were distributed to groundwater wells and separated into water-use categories of industrial, production wells, power generation, mining, domestic, irrigation, livestock or commercial. Groundwater-withdrawal data were obtained, where available, from existing database resources hosted by various State and Federal agencies. For Texas, data were obtained from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) from both existing Groundwater Availability Models (GAM), and from historical groundwater-withdrawal data....

The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) recognizes the need for a strong data foundation to inform science-based decisions for fisheries management at a watershed level. In preparation for a shift towards comprehensive watershed-scale planning, AGFD is developing a fisheries data management system with an initial focus on compiling and formatting several hundred thousand fish survey and stocking records. Fish data will be integrated within a Geographic Information System (GIS) by georeferencing observations to an existing national spatial framework (National Hydrography Dataset), which will allow for broader transferability to watersheds shared with neighboring states, creating a seamless layer not limited by...

Groundwater withdrawals are published by county and use type every 5 years by the U.S. Geological Survey (http://water.usgs.gov/watuse/) and published values often do not specify the aquifer(s) from which the withdrawals are derived. The items included in this dataset represent estimates of water use by aquifer in the southeastern United States in order to provide better insight into the 3-dimensional distribution of groundwater withdrawals in time and space.

The Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-11) was passed into law on March 30, 2009. Sub-title F of the law, also known as the SECURE (Science and Engineering to Comprehensively Understand and Responsibly Enhance) Water Act, calls for the establishment of a “national water availability and use assessment program” in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The recommendation for a national assessment of the available water resources was driven by the lack of such an assessment since 1978. In fulfillment of the Act, the USGS developed the National Water Census (NWC), under the auspices of the USGS Water Availability and Use Program, and as part of that activity, among others, collected water withdrawal...

As part of the Coastal Carolinas Focus Area Study of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Census Program, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to develop models for the Pee Dee River Basin, North Carolina and South Carolina, to simulate future streamflow and irrigation demand based on land use, climate, and water demand projections. SWAT is a basin-scale, process-based watershed model with the capability of simulating water-management scenarios. Model basins were divided into approximately two-square mile subbasins and subsequently divided into smaller, discrete hydrologic response units based on land use, slope, and soil type. The calibration period for the historic model was 2000 to 2014. The...

Hydrogeologic characterization of the basal sand and gravel aquifer in the Hoosic River valley in Hoosick Falls, New York is important for determination of sources, extent, and future migration of PFOA groundwater contamination; evaluation of potential remedial actions; and appraisal of alternative groundwater supplies. Variations in the current pumping stresses and a planned 72-hour aquifer test provide an opportunity to characterize hydraulic connections in the basal sand and gravel aquifer through continuous monitoring of groundwater levels in selected wells. Groundwater is an often overlooked freshwater resource compared to surface water, but groundwater is used widely across the United States, especially during periods of drought. If groundwater models can successfully simulate past conditions, they may be used to evaluate potential future pumping scenarios or climate conditions, thus providing a valuable planning tool for water-resource managers. Quantifying the groundwater-use component for a groundwater model is a vital but often challenging endeavor. This dataset includes groundwater withdrawal rates modeled for the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system (Ozark system) from 1900 to 2010 by groundwater model cell (2.6 square kilometers) for five water-use divisions: agriculture...

This dataset contains Landsat-derived images of Evaporative Fraction (ETf), Reference Evapotranspiration (ETo), and Actual Evapotranspiration (ETa) over a portion of California’s Central Valley for 15 dates in 2016. Each of the 15 images used in this study had three corresponding Tif files representing ETf, ETo, and ETa. Data used in this project was sourced from Landsat 8 Surface Reflectance Tier 1 images processed in Google Earth Engine (GEE). These images contain five visible and near-infrared (VNIR) bands and two short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands processed to orthorectified surface reflectance, and two thermal infrared (TIR) bands processed to orthorectified brightness temperature. To determine thermal properties...

This data release provides a monthly irrigation water use reanalysis for the period 2000-20 for all USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset of Subwatersheds (HUC12) in the conterminous United States (CONUS). Results include reference evapotranspiration (ETo), actual evapotranspiration (ETa), irrigated areas, consumptive use, and effective precipitation for each HUC12. ETo and ETa were estimated using the operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop, Senay and others, 2013; Senay and others, 2020) model executed in the OpenET (Melton and others, 2021) web-based application implemented in Google Earth Engine. Results provided by OpenET/SSEBop were summarized to hydrologic response units (HRUs) in the National Hydrologic...

The 1990 census was the last nationally consistent survey of a home’s source of water, and has not been surveyed since. The associated larger work presents a method for projecting the population dependent on domestic wells for years after 1990, using information from the 1990 census along with population data from subsequent censuses. The method is based on the “domestic ratio” at the census block-group level, defined here as the number of households dependent on domestic wells divided by the total population. Analysis of 1990 data (>220,000 block-groups) indicates that the domestic ratio is a function of the household density. As household density increases, the domestic ratio decreases, once a household density...

Consumptive use (CU) of water is an important factor for determining water availability and groundwater storage. Many regional stakeholders and water-supply managers in the Upper Rio Grande Basin have indicated CU is of primary concern in their water-management strategies, yet CU data is sparse for this area. This polygon feature class, which represents irrigated acres for 2015, is a geospatial component of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Census Upper Rio Grande Basin (URGB) focus area study's effort to improve quantification of CU in parts of New Mexico, west Texas, and northern Chihuahua. These digital data accompany Ivahnenko, T.I., Flickinger, A.K., Galanter, A.E., Douglas-Mankin, K.R., Pedraza, D.E.,...
