Observations of irrigated agricultural land within the Willcox Groundwater Basin in Arizona. Digitized field boundaries were used to locate crops for in situ verification twice in 2022; crop verification occurred first on May 17th and again on August 26th. Field boundaries were digitized from U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Imagery Program County Mosaic 2021 imagery for Arizona and supplemented with Landsat and Sentinel2 imagery collections accessed via the Sentinel Hub, Sentinel Playground (https://apps.sentinel-hub.com/sentinel-playground). Satellite images were also used to identify the length of the growing season and crop condition. Water withdrawals were calculated using the modified...

Hydrogeologic characterization of the basal sand and gravel aquifer in the Hoosic River valley in Hoosick Falls, New York is important for determination of sources, extent, and future migration of PFOA groundwater contamination; evaluation of potential remedial actions; and appraisal of alternative groundwater supplies. Variations in the current pumping stresses and a planned 72-hour aquifer test provide an opportunity to characterize hydraulic connections in the basal sand and gravel aquifer through continuous monitoring of groundwater levels in selected wells. Publications Williams, J.H., and Heisig, P.M., 2018, Groundwater-level analysis of selected wells in the Hoosic River Valley near Hoosick Falls, New...
Groundwater is an often overlooked freshwater resource compared to surface water, but groundwater is used widely across the United States, especially during periods of drought. If groundwater models can successfully simulate past conditions, they may be used to evaluate potential future pumping scenarios or climate conditions, thus providing a valuable planning tool for water-resource managers. Quantifying the groundwater-use component for a groundwater model is a vital but often challenging endeavor. This dataset includes groundwater withdrawal rates modeled for the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system (Ozark system) from 1900 to 2010 by groundwater model cell (2.6 square kilometers) for five water-use divisions: agriculture...

Problem - The demand for water in New York State is unevenly distributed. Because increasing competition for local supplies could lead to shortages, it is expedient to know how and where water is withdrawn, delivered, and used. There are many dimensions to water-use issues, and all should be considered to develop a full understanding of the use and delivery of water in the State. In order to apply water-use information to problems of water-demand management, many data elements need to be collected and stored in a convenient location and format. The categories of water use most commonly considered include public-water supply, domestic, thermoelectric power generation, industrial, irrigation and, to a lesser degree,...

Observations of irrigated agricultural land within the Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin in Arizona. Landsat and Sentinel2 imagery collections accessed via the U.S. Geological Survey LandsatLook Viewer (https://landlook.usgs.gov/landlook/) were used to digitize field boundaries, as well as observe crop type, crop growing season, crop condition, and irrigation system characteristics. Water withdrawals were calculated using the modified Blaney-Criddle model of calculating consumptive use (U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, 1992 appendix A) using crop coefficients from Doorenbos and Pruitt (1975), the number of acres with active crops, crop condition, and irrigation system efficiency. The withdrawal equation was modified...

INTRODUCTION • Concerns over the viability of the fractured bedrock aquifer that provides about 1/3 of Rockland County’s water supply prompted a 5-year study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to (1) define the hydrogeologic framework of the aquifer, (2) assess conditions within it, and (3) identify other potential sources of water for the County. The study was done in cooperation with Rockland County and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. • Population growth in Rockland County to nearly 300,000 people has been paralleled by significant hydrologic changes over the past 50 years –water demand and impervious surface area have increased, and sanitary sewers now serve most areas and discharge...

Problem Dissolved oxygen (DO) is an important indicator of water quality that until recently has been cost-prohibitive to monitor extensively in both space and time. Continuous water-quality data, particularly in coastal environments with bidirectional tidal flow, is necessary for resource managers to understand the dynamic changes in water quality that occur tidally, daily, seasonally, and during aperiodic events. In the estuaries surrounding Long Island, such events may include wastewater treatment plant failures, harmful algal blooms, and extreme weather. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has extensive experience with continuous water-quality monitoring at fixed locations along the coast that provides valuable...

Background Every day, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) supplies more than one billion gallons of drinking water to more than nine million people. To do this, the DEP maintains an extensive network of reservoirs and aqueducts. A major part of this system, the West of Hudson (WOH) network, in the Delaware and Hudson River drainages, includes six reservoirs (fig. 1) – Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie – which were constructed from the early 1900s to the 1960s and have an estimated combined storage capacity of more than 460 billion gallons. Problem and Objective The daily and seasonal management of the WOH reservoirs by DEP depends on accurate bathymetric...
