These are the results produce during the analysis and used in the report: Osnas, E.E. 2024. Steller’s Eider (Polysticta stelleri) population and density estimates from the Arctic Coastal Plain and Utqiaġvik Triangle surveys using generalized additive models. US Fish and Wildlife Service, Division of Migratory Bird Management, Anchorage, AK. Contain within are images (png), R objects or environments (.RDS and .RData), and posterior summaries of population size and trend (CSV). A brief description of each file can be found in the Readme.html file contained within the zipped folder.

Annual populations and spatial density estimates are needed for the threatened Alaska-breeding population of Steller’s eiders (Polysticta stelleri) to assess recovery status and guide recovery actions but these quantities are poorly estimated in this rare species using traditional methods. Therefore, population size and spatial variation in density were estimated across the Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) and Utqiagvik Triangle (Triangle) survey areas using spatio-temporal generalized additive models and compared to traditional design-based estimates. Compared to design-based estimates, model-based estimates were more precise and less variable between years. Moreover, data sets can be combined to produce common estimates,...

Insect pollinators-particularly native bees-are critically important in the maintenance of terrestrial plant and animal communities, yet our understanding of how contemporary threats influence this group and the pollination services they provide is virtually unstudied with the sagebrush biome. Our investigation will quantify how bee communities respond to widespread threats to sagebrush-wildfire and invasive annual grasses-and provide foundational knowledge needed for undertaking informed management decisions to improve the resilience of the biome.
The Delaware River clubtail (Gomphurus septima delawarensis) is an endemic dragonfly subspecies found in the Delaware River watershed. Due to significant data gaps regarding its taxonomy, distribution, habitat associations, and response to key threats, it is considered a Science Needs species by the Science Applications program in the Northeast. This pilot study is focused on the known historic locations for the subspecies in New York and intends to field-test survey methodologies for assessing its distribution within the Delaware watershed. We will collect all Gomphidae exuviae (shed larval skins) encountered during timed searches at 11 historical locations across New York. These surveys will be repeated at these...

This project is in support of the 2024 Steller’s eider 5 year review and Species Status Assessment. I use traditional design-based and generalized additive model-based estimates of Steller’s eider density and population size on the Arctic Coastal Plain and Utqiagvik Triangle areas. There are four important products associated with this project: (1) a GitHub code repository that gives the source code used for analysis and to reproduce the report, (2) a zipped up data folder that contain data used in the analysis and report, (3) a zipped up folder that contains all figures and results of the analysis, and (4) the final report in PDF format. Each folder contain a readme file in markdown and html for human understanding....

The Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS) and Southeast Blueprint Blueprint continue to build on years of investment by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and partners to develop, refine, and apply conservation blueprints to advance on-the-ground conservation actions across the region. Astute Spruce, LLC and the USFWS collaborated closely in the first phase of this project “Enhanced User Engagement with Conservation Blueprints in the Southeastern U.S.” (F19AC00609) to develop a pilot version of the Southeast Conservation Blueprint Explorer specifically intended to make it easier to access, engage with, and interpret the Southeast Conservation Blueprint and underlying sub-regional conservation...

Vast areas of the PNW remain data deficient with respect to the estimated more than 750 wild bee species that provide essential ecosystem services there. The Oregon Bee Atlas is working with expert volunteer Master Melittologists to address these deficits by conducting intensive multi-method inventory and monitoring field work throughout the state and with a special focus in Grassland and Sagebrush habitats due to their rich biodiversity. This field work generates species occurrence data, data on community assemblage, ecological data on bee-floral relations, and collects genetic material for hundreds of pollinator species. This informs conservation and restoration of species-at-risk, informs species assessments,...
