MDOT spends millions of dollars annually for highway construction. Streamflow records, hydrologic analyses of basins, and hydraulic analyses of flooding potential at proposed highway crossings help the MDOT to make more informed decisions on the use of highway construction funding. Climate change and climate variability impacts such as rising sea levels have the potential to exacerbate seawater intrusion and the strain on coastal freshwater resources in already stressed groundwater basins such as those in the Pajaro Valley groundwater basin, California. A Smart Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) system allows for the partially automated collection of cone penetrometer data (CPT) to determine mechanical properties of soil along a vertical profile. A smart DCP system was used to collect soil penetration-with-depth values alongside 12 soil pits dug in the Utuado Batholith, a late Cretaceous age granodiorite pluton located on the northern portion of the Cordillera Central in west-central Puerto Rico (Learned et al., 1981). Both the upland plateau (PL sites) and steep dissected terrain, or side slopes (SS sites), of the Utuado batholith were tested.
