2012 Updates (from the FY12 Annual Review) The NWIS Web Services Snapshot represents the next generation of data retrieval and management. The newest Snapshot tool allows instant access to NWIS data from four different web services through ArcGIS, software available to all USGS scientists in all mission areas. Increased data retrieval efficiency reduces the steps required to retrieve and compile water data from multiple sites from what can be more than 30 steps to just a few clicks. As an end-user education tool, it promotes use of NWIS data from both web services and the NWIS database, which increases the production of scientific research and analysis that uses NWIS data. The Snapshot database design enables efficient...
This project described production of an information foundation for fish habitat research consisting of a “mashup” of data from multiple USGS data systems that are fragmented among the former USGS Divisions. The proposal aimed to develop and test the semantic approach to data integration by focusing on the problem of fish habitat modeling. Effective prediction of the abundance of particular species at particular locations is a primary objective of both ecology and natural resource management. Better knowledge of aquatic fish ecology and habitat requirements and improved tools for assessment and planning are needed to help conserve and rehabilitate populations throughout their native range. Principal Investigator...

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are instruments that collect water-quality, depth, and other data in waterbodies. They produce complex and massive datasets. There is currently no standard method to store, organize, process, quality-check, analyze, or visualize this data. The Waterbody Rapid Assessment Tool (WaterRAT) is aPython application that processes and displays water-quality data with interactive two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures, but it runs offline with few capabilities and for just one study site. This project will transition WaterRAT to an online application that the public can easily use to view all AUV data. A database of all AUV datasets will be developed to improve accessibility,...

An established workflow for using the Kibana visual data analysis tools to, in near real time, to determine earthquake significance as well as impacts and effects, as illustrated in 2 figures below as the tool and the workflow. This open source service currently has no free mechanism to secure the data in order to preserve data integrity, so it remains internal. The Kibana Interactive Visualization and Data Analysis Tool shows the event detection, the use of key words that provide indications of shaking intensity, and location. The Kibana Interactive Visualization and Data Analysis Tool Workflow depicts how the tool can be used to drill down into the data to the level of the event relevant photos, which support...
This presentation is a product of the 2014 CDI Project: Use of Controlled Vocabularies in USGS Information Applications: Requirements Analysis for Automated Processes and Services. It was presented on Apr. 9, 2014 as part of the CDI Monthly Forum.

Earthquake Significance Summary Reports are automatically derived for tweet based event detections at five and ten minutes after events occur. The reports give rapid indications of public interest in the event, for use internally and by collaborators. The information supports derivation of an event interest factor which is used to configure alerts from the system.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data at Risk (DaR) team partnered with the Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC) to preserve and release a subset of their golden eagle telemetry data. In the 1990’s, researchers from what is now FRESC worked with Boise State University (BSU) and collected telemetry and ground observation data that documented the local and migratory movements and behaviors of golden eagles. Over the course of this study 21 golden eagles in the conterminous western US were captured and marked with Argos platform terminal transmitters (PTTs) and tracked by satellite as they moved between breeding and wintering locations (individuals marked with Argos PTTs and tracked by satellite are...

The ACFB is a 50 000 km2 basin located in the southeastern United States. Three...
