A GAP Analysis uses GIS layers provided by the GAP Analysis Program (species distribution models, stewardship data) to determine which areas within a species distribution have protected status and to identify possible conservation gaps. This GAP Analysis was conducted for Greater Sage-grouse within the boundary of the Southern Rockies LCC. About 7.6% of the Sage-grouse's total predicted distribution is within the SRLCC (based on GAP distribution models). There are four products in this ScienceBase item: an Excel spreadsheet with analysis data (see list below), a GIF image map of the SRLCC (displaying predicted sage-grouse distribution and areas with protected status), a map package containing the GIS layers used...

This map package is one example of how the National Atlas's vegetation growth data layers can be presented. The layers show Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from the Center of Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS), remotely sensed through Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) methods. There are annual average vegetation growth layers for the period between 1990 - 2005. Data layers are clipped to the boundary of the Southern Rockies LCC. The National Atlas does not include information about units, so the layers are currently for visual approximations only. The vegetation growth layers can also be viewed through the National Atlas's Map Maker (users can find the layers in the...

The USGS GAP Analysis Program has developed range maps and distribution models for 1401 species, 604 of which are found within the SRLCC. This record's parent folder contains several examples of GAP species web services. The GAP website has a complete list of available web services for species as well as a map viewer for species data. Species: Bighorn Sheep ( Ovis canadensis) There are two web services for this species: the range map, showing the geographic limits within which the species can be found, and a distribution model, which predicts the environment within the range that is suitable for occupation by the species. Link to metadata for GAP range maps and distribution models. To access services, select...

The Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) manages a version of the PAD-US database and distributes the data set as PAD-US (CBI Edition), Version 2. The 2010 version of PAD-US CBI Edition (version 1) contains both fee lands and easements. The 2012 version 2 contains fee lands only, and is meant to be used in combination with the National Conservation Easement Database (NCED) (ScienceBase Link). The other difference between the two editions is that there have been full updates to 13 states (including Arizona and Colorado).

From the EERMA Interative Energy Atlas website: "The Energy and Environment in the Rocky Mountain Area (EERMA) project is composed of interdisciplinary U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists working to provide land management agencies and decision makers with synthesized information and comprehensive, virtual tools to promote understanding of the trade-offs of energy development. The purpose of the Interactive Energy Atlas is to provide data and decision support tools to visualize and assess the potential effects of energy development on terrestrial/hydrological resources at multiple scales." This viewer and data portal currently contains data sets for Colorado and New Mexico. Topics include existing energy development...
"Abstract: If conservation of biodiversity is the goal, then the protected areas network of the continental US may be one of our best conservation tools for safeguarding ecological systems (i.e., vegetation communities). We evaluated representation of ecological systems in the current protected areas network and found insufficient representation at three vegetation community levels within lower elevations and moderate to high productivity soils. We used national-level data for ecological systems and a protected areas database to explore alternative ways we might be able to increase representation of ecological systems within the continental US. By following one or more of these alternatives it may be possible to...

This map package contains a raster layer showing change in Net Primary Productivity (NPP) from 1981 - 2003, derived from remotely sensed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The layer is one of the FAO's core data sets provided as public domain through the organization's GeoNetwork data portal. The data set has a global extent, so the map package includes U.S. state boundaries and the boundary of the Southern Rockies LCC, to help highlight the changes in this local region. Link to Metadata from the FAO's GeoNetwork. This site has several options for viewing and downloading the data, including KML format for Google Earth. Other layers in this map package: Shapefiles showing SRLCC boundary ( link to metadata...

Data resources for summarizing annual Net Primary Productivity (NPP) data over the past 2-3 Decades 1. The website of University of Montana’s Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group provides annual NPP data for the years 2000 - 2012: http://www.ntsg.umt.edu/project/mod17 There are also summaries for change in NPP over the last decade: ftp://ftp.ntsg.umt.edu/pub/MODIS/NTSG_Products/MOD17/Trend_2km_GEOTIFF/ 2. The Global Land Cover Facility’s Global Production Efficiency Model ( GLOPEM): these are annual NPP data sets that cover the years 1981 - 2000. As an example of what can be done with these data sets, here is a 2010 study that calculated NPP changes in high altitude regions of the western U.S.: http://mri.scnatweb.ch/download-document?gid=1115...

The Colorado Plateau Rapid Ecoregional Assessment (REA) website contains links to the final report. Data from the report are shared through the Colorado Plateau REA Data Portal. Data portal maps are downloadable and can be viewed through map services and ArcGIS.com. The report and associated data answer the following management questions relating to landscape characterization: (questions are from the final REA workplan) Ecological Systems Management Questions: 1. Where are existing vegetative communities? 2. Where are vegetative communities vulnerable to change agents in the future? 3. What change agents have affected existing vegetation communities? Soils and Biological Crusts Management Questions:...

The Solar Energy Development Programmatic EIS (Solar PEIS) was prepared by the Department of Energy, Department of Interior and Bureau of Land Management and covers the area of six western states: Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah. The purpose is to assess environmental impacts of solar development in the region. The Solar PEIS website has an online map viewer as well as downloadable data (PDF maps, GIS shapefiles, Google Earth KMZ files). There are GIS layers that show current and potential locations of solar facilities and priority solar development areas (BLM Solar Energy Zones). The online map viewer allows users to view these layers along with data relevent to managing environmental...
