Flood is the most devastating of all natural disasters, leading to both human fatalities and economic losses worth billions of dollars every year. Flood inundation maps play a key role in mitigating flood related losses by indicating areas that are vulnerable to floods. However, the conventional approach to creating flood maps using hydraulic modeling is resource extensive, and cannot be applied easily in rural data sparse regions in the United States (U.S.). An alternative way to produce floodplain maps is proposed in Sangwan and Merwade (2015), which uses easily accessible gSSURGO soil data to produce floodplain maps for larger regions. This community aims at providing national scale floodplain map for the entire...
The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) and Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) are used to portray surface water on The National Map. The NHD represents the drainage network with features such as rivers, streams, canals, lakes, ponds, coastline, dams, and streamgages. An important use of the NHD is the analysis of surface-water systems. This analysis is possible because many types of location information can be linked to the NHD, such as flow-volume, velocity, temperature, water chemistry, pollution control classifications, aquatic species habitat, recreation designations, or water rights. Such network-linked data is typically maintained by various organizations at Federal, State, and local levels, as well as research,...
In 1968 Congress passed the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act to preserve the free-flowing nature and special values of some of our most precious waterways. Presently there are 208 national wild and scenic rivers in 39 States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, totaling more than 12,700 miles (as of October 2015). To better manage these rivers, the four primary federal agencies with responsibility for the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System (the United States Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service) developed an interagency geodatabase that includes information about each river and river segment; such as the river name, classification, list...
