Map Package format. Structure point data set containing locations and structure type, with strike and dip (planar features) and trend and plunge (linear features). The symbology is derived from ESRI Representations associated with the SymbolFGDCLookup table in the geodatabase. Most trends and dips are based on field measurements using Brunton or similar compass. A sun compass was employed in areas of strong magnetic signature, such as iron-formation. Contains bedrock structural measurements acquired by the multiple field geologists over 40+ years. Collected from bedrock exposures and from data transcribed from published and unpublished analog (non-digital) maps. To access the full data set, download using the link...

The current database consists of location 9,032 entries. The surface-based, point data include 5,272, 6,939, and 903 density, magnetic susceptibility, and NRM measurements, respectively. Downhole data from 146 drillcore have also been incorporated, yielding an additional 1,145 and 9,622 measurements of density and magnetic susceptibility, respectively. Geologic interpretation of gravity and magnetic anomaly data in a given area is greatly enhanced if density, magnetic susceptibility (MS) and natural remanent magnetization (NRM) data are available for representative rock-types (Chandler and others, 2008). Along with geologic information from outcrop and drill-holes, rock property data help relate geophysical anomaly...

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) completed an inventory of the holdings of the DNR Drill Core Library (DCL). The Drill Core Library facility contains geologic materials including drill core, rotasonic samples, cuttings, pulps and rejects, processed materials, peat, thin sections, thin section billets and hand samples. The inventory project also included identifying space and preservation issues, beginning the process of centralizing and standardizing the administrative databases for all holdings, and making more information within the DCL publicly available.

Location data for exploratory, sciencific, or engineering borings conducted statwide since the early 1900s. Drill Core and/or other samples from a large number of these borings are stored in the DNR's Drill Core Library in Hibbing, Minnesota. For more information on the drill core library please vist the DNR's webpage: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lands_minerals/dc_library.html

Compilation of rotary sonic drill cores with magnetic susceptibility measurements collected by Minnesota Geological Survey Quaternary geologists. The full dataset is available upon request and includes 1) magnetic susceptibility profiles for each rotary sonic core, 2) named unit averages and standard deviations for each county, and 3) named unit averages and standard deviations for all data.

The County Well Index database was initiated by MGS, and is now a collaborative effort of MGS and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). Much effort is committed to compile, add value, and distribute data from drilling done mostly by well contractors across the state. The MGS role is in categorization and correlation of materials intersected by drilling, as MDH administers well regulation. This GIS-based system contains basic information for over 540,000 wells drilled in Minnesota, and single-copy paper records are on file for about 100,000 additional sites. The entire well record including construction information such as casing, screen and pump information, hydrologic data, and descriptions of geologic materials...

Overview map with 11 layers of lines and polygons that can be turned on an off making younger units 'removable' to expose older bedrock units as part of a layered bedrock geologic map of Minnesota. Downloadable layers can be found on the MGS's Open Data portal under the Spatial Datasets, D-05, Layered Bedrock Geology. Check the 11 Layers on the right side of the page and select which layer you would like to download. Mesozoic--Map showing where rocks of Mesozoic (principally Cretaceous age, nominal Jurassic age) mapped or presumed to exist in Minnesota; Paleozoic--Map showing where Paleozoic age rocks are mapped in Minnesota; Precambrian--Map showing the location and type of Precambrian rocks mapped in Minnesota;...

Static metadata (current to August 2018) of Minnesota's borehole geophysical log collection maintained by the Minnesota Geological Survey. This collection is web-accessible through the MGS Open Data Portal at https://z.umn.edu/borehole_geo, where users can obtain the most up-to-date information pertaining to old and new borehole geophysical logs and download corresponding PDF and LAS files for each log (if available). The Borehole Geophysical Database (BGD) is a collection of over 7000 borehole geophysical logs of water wells and drill holes throughout Minnesota. Database collections reside at the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS) and are continually maintained and expanded upon by MGS staff as part of MGS mapping...

The Karst database is now (06/30/2020) being managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Ecological and Water Resources. Since the early 1980s, the partner agencies have been mapping karst features and publishing various versions of their results in the form of 1:100,000 scale County Geologic Atlases. In the mid 1990s, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was assigned responsibility for the hydrogeology portions of the County Atlases, and therefore is now responsible for the karst mapping. Sinkhole distribution maps have been published for several counties. The karst feature database has been developed to allow sinkhole and other karst feature distributions to be displayed and analyzed across...

Minnesota Geological Survey, in cooperation with industry, sampled the State of Minnesota and adjacent regions for till geochemistry and indicator minerals at a 30-km spacing during summer 2004. Within target cells, each a quarter-degree latitude by a half-degree longitude, till from between about 1 and 2 m depth was sampled by filling a 15 liter plastic pail. At a few sites, vertical profiles were collected. In addition, three transects to the north were sampled, to help identify sediments derived by long-distance glacial transport, to obtain reference samples from the Thompson nickel belt, and also to extend sampling to the limit of Hudson Bay-derived carbonate-bearing sediments, to permit comparison to Minnesota...

Collection of scanned 35mm film slides of outcrop and field sites from various MGS geologists, mostly pertaining to Precambrian geology in Minnesota.

All sediment samples from auger holes, outcrops, and cores are processed to determine texture. The 1-2 mm coarse sand fraction is packaged separately, and about half of these fractions are categorized lithologically by a glacial geologist. The data are recorded on paper data sheets and in a database.

The Minnesota drill core repository is managed by the Department of Natural Resources, in relation to a legislated obligation to submit a one-fourth portion of core samples obtained for mineral exploration. These samples become property of the state and are stored in the DNR's drill core library, located in Hibbing. The original drill core library was constructed in 1972. The most recent additions were constructed in 1990, and were subsequently expanded in 1995. Construction presently is underway on an expansion. The existing facility contains nearly 2.3 million feet of core, extracted from 79 Minnesota counties during the period from 1905 to the present.

GIS data set consisting of more than 200,000 polygons that represent areas where bedrock is at and near the land surface. The attribute table includes descriptions of features if available. The feature data may also include multiple overlapping polygons and differing descriptions at some locations, indicating the historical nature of outcrop mapping in the state.
