The collection of hand samples was obtained from projects of the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) related to the construction of water and sewer lines, throughout mainly the eastern part of the state. The collection consists of 525 hand samples from which thin sections (525) were made; in addition, there are 21 boxes containing approximately 2 pound, hand samples from work on the Cosgrove Tunnel Project. The samples were collected by Father James Skehan and each chunk of rock has an identifier painted on it, referring to the station location. The thin sections and the hand samples are stored in cardboard boxes, on pallets, at the Record Center, on Deer Island in Boston Harbor. The condition of the collection...

This collection consists of "Geologic and Seismic Investigation" reports along existing and/or proposed state roads and interstates. These were prepared as part of a USGS cooperative program with the then-called Massachusetts Department of Public Works (MDPW) in the 1960's. These investigations and reports were prepared by geologists such as R.N. Oldale, C.R. Tuttle and L.W. Currier. The seismic data consists of seismic refraction profiles. The reports are stored at MHD headquarters in the Transportation Building at 10 Park Plaza, Boston. This collection consists of many "Geologic and Seismic Investigation" reports along existing and/or proposed state roads and interstates. These were prepared as part of a USGS...

This collection of lithology logs or borehole logs held by the Massachusetts Water Authority (MWRA) is from drill work on MWRA projects. There are 8394 logs in an electronic database called GBase. This collection of lithology logs or borehole logs held by the Massachusetts Water Authority (MWRA) is from drill work on MWRA projects. There are 8394 logs in an electronic database called GBase. The lithology logs are not in the GBase. An improvement would be to design a data structure that would produce a series of related tables containing geotechnical data, lithologic descriptions and physical parameters such as water table elevations and depth to bedrock. Not all of the logs since 1998 are part of a database and...

Photographs were taken of core samples for some of the older construction projects; more recently digital photos are being taken for rotosonic work. The photograph collection is housed in the library, overseen by Mary Lydon, at the main facility in Chelsea. The photograph collection held by the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority is from photographs of core samples and related work (drilling). The non-digital photos are not in the database as being individually documented but as a boxed record of photos; an improvement would be to have individual photos documented and scanned. Digital photos are in the database.

The collection of 50,000 paper well logs, dating back to the 1960's, represents three generations of well schedules; the original version (1966) contained uncoded information about a well and a brief lithology and a hand-drawn location map, and data has been electronically recorded, excluding the lithology description; the next version (1977) became the GWSI data file, and was designed using codes with an accompanying explanation and only the coded lithology information has been stored electronically and not the lithologic descriptions; the third version (1987) is more user friendly than earlier versions. This collection of well logs (well schedules) that contain lithology information or lithology logs, is stored...

The lithology log collection consists of 70,000 paper logs; some of which are stored in the Boston Office (10 Park Plaza) of MHD. The collection has been recorded electronically in a database. The electronic records of logs were collected and catalogued in two time periods, from 1940 to 1998, and from 1998 to present. All logs prior to 1998 from various contractors are in an electronic database that is linked to scanned tiff images of each borehole. The work of scanning the lithology logs, was a project undertaken by Boston College (BC), and consisted of 60,000 borehole logs, from 10,000 locations. The data from the BC work is part of a database controlled by the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority and they share...
