The majority of the oil sample collection was collected from selected Ohio oil and gas producing horizons by students of the Ohio State University from August 1981 to March 1982. A small number of samples have been donated by other companies and individuals. The samples were exposed to open air and subjected to temperature changes during collection, but now the samples are sealed in test tubes or glass jars and refrigerated. The following producing horizons were sampled: Trempeleau, Rose Run, Trenton, Clinton/Newburg, Oriskany, Gordon/Ohio, Berea, and Injun. These hand samples are an extensive collection of Cenozoic-age samples from the State of Ohio and soft sediment bottom samples from Lake Erie. 8,650 samples of unconsolidated Cenozoic-age sediment 2,054 samples from Lake Erie cores and grab samples The Cenozoic-age hand sample collection are inventoried and the resulting data base and Metadata was provided to the USGS and the public as part of the products to be delivered at the completion of Ohio's FY 2008 NGGDPP Grant Award.

The geochemical analysis collection consists of paper records from carbonate, clay, and coal rock and core samples. In some cases, the sample location was spotted on a map but coordinates where not determined. The paper records of a variety of geochemical analyses have not been inventoried or entered in data bases. Records of the geochemical analyses on file at the HRCL provide users with the chemical analysis file number, location information, rock type or coal seam, stratigraphic information, thickness data, property owner, and general information. Chemical composition and engineering property data is available for carbonate samples. Scanning all of the paper records of the geochemical data collection and creating...

Mainly air photographs flown between 1950 and 1979 on a county by county basis in Ohio. The USGS and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) aerial photographs flown from 1949 to 1974 are the largest collection inventoried as part of the work for Grant 08HQGR0106-0007 (Table 1). The collection consists of two sets of air photos that have statewide coverage. The USGS air photo set, flown from 1954 to 1963, is organized by 15-minute topographic quadrangle. The USDA air photo set, flown from 1949 to 1974, is organized on a county by county basis. The aerial photograph collection is inventoried and data base created generated as part of Ohio's FY 2008 NGGDPP Grant Award.

A total 845 cores drilled in 85 of Ohio¿s 88 counties; 19 cores drilled in Kenton, Mason, and Pendleton Counties of Kentucky; and two cores drilled in Mason and Wood Counties of West Virginia. The Ohio DGS has completed comprehensive inventory of the core collectionacquired through 2007. The inventory data has been entered into ACCESS databases and has been reviewed and edited to ensure that reliable information was entered. Core locations in Ohio and adjacent states (Ohio Division of Geological Survey Miscellaneous Geology Map 4) was updated with the addition of the new cores acquired in 2007 and a print on demand map will soon be available to the public.

The paper seismogram tracings collected from 1905 to 1992 were donated from John Carroll University. Paper seismic tracings of worldwide earthquakes were recorded by the John Carroll University Seismic Observatory, Cleveland Ohio from 1909 to 1992. Each daily drum-recorder record measures 30 cm by 102 cm. A total of 6,205 tracings of the estimated 40,000 seismic tracings record earthquake events. The seismogram tracings will be inventoried, entered into a data base, and Metadata generated that will be provided to the USGS and the public as some of the products to be delivered at the completion of Ohio's FY 2008 NGGDPP Grant Award. Scanning of these seismograms and creating digital files available via the internet...

The lithology log collection consists of graphic paper logs of measured sections and cores from selected areas of the state of Ohio. These logs were created by Ohio Division of Geological Survey personnel or donated by other geologists working in Ohio. Scanning the lithology log collection and creating digital files would enhance public assess to these records

Over the years, the Ohio Division of Geological Survey has required the that researchers conducting petrographic research donate their thin sections to the Survey's thin section collection. The result is small collection of thin-sections. The records for the thin section collection provide users with American Petroleum Institute Number, ODGS core or sample number, location data, lease and well number, stratigraphic information, and core interval of the thin section.

A statewide investigation of the sand and gravel resources on a county by county basis was conducted in the 1970 and 1980¿s by the ODGS. Nine published ODGS Report of Investigations and unpublished data for additional counties were generated by the end of this project in the late 1980¿s. Large samples collected from field locations, measured sections and core borings were returned to the laboratory for air drying, sieve analysis using U.S. Standard Sieve Series, and pebble counts. All cobbles and pebbles greater than 1.27 cm in diameter were identified and counted. See collection inventories and metadata for additional details.

River and flood plain borings drilled for the U. S. Army-Corps of Engineers detailed surveys of the entire floodplain of the Ohio River from Pittsburgh PA to Powhatan Point, OH. An index sheet and a series of 280 charts were produced by the Ohio River Board of Engineers between 1911 and 1914 and revised in 1930. Each chart illustrates Ohio River bathymetry, topographic elevations, cultural and navigational features, land-use, property owners, lithologic composition of river bank and bar sediments, and subsurface lithologic data and, in some cases bedrock elevations, from river bank and river bottom borings. All borings are numbered from the Ohio River left bank to the right bank and occur in a line perpendicular...

The inventory consists of paper records of Lake Erie bottom sediment samples collected from cores and grab samples of the lake sediment. The data collected for these samples includes sample location, water depth; percentages of sand, silt, and clay; field sample description; lake deposit thickness; glacial till thickness; depth to bedrock; bedrock elevation; and miscellaneous notes. The Ohio Division of Geological Survey has a small collection of sidewall cores and core plugs from several boreholes and oil and gas producing horizons from the State of Ohio. The records for the side wall provide users with American Petroleum Institute Number, ODGS core or sample number, location data, lease and well number, stratigraphic information, and core interval of the side wall core.
