This Collection of Coal Field Measured Sections consists of handwritten descriptions of rock unit sequences measured along roads, railroads, trails, and strip mine highwalls in the Tennessee coal fields. Most of the collection is composed of sections measured by Dr. Harold Wanless during his study of the southern Appalachian coal fields in the late 1930's. Most of the sections are unpublished, except for being included as columnar section illustrations in - Wanless, H.R., 1946, Pennsylvanian geology of a part of the southern Appalachian coal field: Geological Society of America Memoir, 13, 162 p. Other measured sections in this collection originate from published and unpublished sources.

This collection of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) documents consists of published and unpublished reports, memoranda, and maps related to mineral resource investigations and hydroelectric dam site geotechnical studies throughout the TVA region. They have been acquired as a result of the close association between TGS and TVA staff over many decades. Users please note that there are also additional unpublished TVA documents contained in the Tennessee Geological Survey Mineral Resources Collection. This collection primarily consists of both published and unpublished geological, geophysical, and hydrogeological documents, maps, and databases pertaining to the Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Y-12 National Security Complex, and former K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant. This is a fairly static collection that was acquired by a Tennesse Geological Survey employee from 1987-1996. The collection also includes documents related to the proposed SuperConducting Super Collidor project circa 1987.

This collection consists of a wide range of mineral resource related items. It includes detailed and summary reports, memoranda, correspondence, notes, maps, and other documents. The documents were produced by former staff working for theTennessee Geological Survey, United States Geological Survey, and Tennessee Valley Authority. As of 2015 nearly all of the items in the collection located in the Knoxville Field Office have been reviewed and scanned, and are included in the metadata records here. This collection consists of written descriptions of lithologies encountered during the drilling phase of various coal exploration programs in Tennessee. Descriptions range from detailed to brief. Information obtained primarily from diamond core drilling with additional information from rotary drilling and e-logs. Drill hole depths range from tens to thousands of feet deep. Individual drill holes were originally located by using the Tennessee State Plane Coordinate System (NAD 27). Quadrangles with abundant drill holes have accompanying drill hole location maps.

The documents in this collection represent material that the Tennessee Geological Survey has acquired from numerous sources over the years. Many of the documents were donated by former employees of zinc companies that once operated in the state. Additional documents represent originals and copies of U.S. Geological Survey files related to the war minerals exploration program conducted in the 1940's, as well as unpublished work completed by the Tennessee Geological Survey. The material includes drill hole logs, geologic maps, cross sections, reports, geochemical analyses, mine maps, and internal company correspondance. This collection consists of bedrock core drived from mineral exploration test holes, coal exploration test holes, and oil and gas exploration test holes. The mineral exploration test holes are primarily associated with zinc exploration in East and Middle Tennessee. There are approximately 475 test holes currently stored in 3 locations in middle Tennessee. The locations are the Ellington Warehouse in Nashville, Tennessee, a TGS Core Storage Facility in Waverly, Tennessee, and a storage building on TVA property in Hartsville, Tennessee. This coal map collection consists of maps depicting coal geology, cropline, coal thickness, mined out areas, and drill hole locations. Map detail ranges from intricate to simple. Maps include published and unpublished data. Some information is repeated on different maps. Various maps are printed on regular bond paper, blueline paper, and tracing paper. Maps are located by 7.5 minute quadrangle or 15 minute quadrangle basis.
This Collection of Oil and Gas Well Rock Cuttings consists of 500 samples collected from 1968 to 2002 from oil and gas drilling in Anderson, Campbell, Cannon, Claiborne, Clay, Coffee, Cumberland, DeKalb, Dickson, Fentress, Franklin, Gibson, Grundy, Hancock, Hawkins, Henry, Hickman, Humphreys, Jackson, Lewis, Macon, Marion, McNairy, and Morgan counties Tennessee. They are stored in the Tennessee Geological Survey Core Storage Facility in Waverly, Tennessee.

This Collection of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Coal Mine Maps and Reports consists of various studies on coal lands and properties in the TVA region. The maps may show coal seam outcrops, underground mine outlines, coal croplines, basic mine dimensions, coal thicknesses, drill hole locations, and other coal mining related features.

This Collection of Coal Samples consists of channel samples of various coal seams in the Tennessee coal fields. The samples were collected for geochemical analysis and most analyses have been published in some form (see Collection of Coal Analyses From Tennessee). Most of the samples have been crushed.

This Collection of Non-Coal Hand Samples is quite varied and includes rock samples collected during field mapping, field investigations, and field trips; mineral samples from surface and subsurface mines and mineral prospects; fossil samples collected during field mapping and field trips; specimens used for teaching and outreach events; and specimens donated to the Survey. Some samples are the only ones available from mining sites that have since been reclaimed and from outcrops that no longer exist.
This Collection of Strip Logs consists of various graphic representations of lithologies or rock units observed in measured sections or core holes. Lithologies are drawn on long narrow paper strip logs at various scales. Most strip log scales are 1 inch = 20 feet, but can range to 1 inch = 100 feet. Most of the information on the strip logs was obtained from the Tennessee Geological Survey drill hole log and measured section collections.
