The Historic Images Collection, dating from the 1910s to 1940s, is the oldest set of photographs at the ISGS. It contains original large-format (mostly 3.5x5 inch up to 5x7 inch) individual black-and-white negatives of our earliest fieldwork and other geologically relevant subjects. Approximately 3,000 negatives are somewhat loosely organized by time frame, geologist, or project.

Digital Geologic Quadrangle Maps in the Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) format. Each map has been converted from the original (internally developed) GIS database schema to GeMS format and published in the National Geologic Map Database.
Digital data and photographs concerning geologic samples from the Illinois Precambrian Basement. Includes all known Precambrian core samples in our Geologic Samples Library, selected core samples of igneous intrusions associated with fluorite mining available to us, and hand samples of igneous rocks potentially carrying Precambrian xenoliths that were transported to the surface near Hicks Dome in the Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District.
Engineering borehole site drawings including logs for the greater Chicago area, dating from 1910's through 1940's. These drawings were assembled by George H. Otto.
Chicago-area deep borehole data and samples associated with the Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Tunnel & Reservoir Plan (TARP), circa 1970s. Cores from the project are being rescued, reviewed and incorporated into our permanent collection along with detailed core photographs. Also includes historical data such as original engineering reports and logs.

State and Basin-wide coal crop/extent, thickness, depth, elevation, quality, availability for mining, and mined area GIS layers and metadata. The maps/digital files used for these studies were compiled from data obtained from a variety of public and private sources and have varying degrees of completeness and accuracy. The maps are designed for regional assessment and have a resolution of 1:500,000. Features or details of features smaller than about one-half mile across may not be accurately portrayed or may be omitted altogether.
