Fish mercury (Hg) data were compiled for 392 unique locations on freshwater streams and rivers in New York State for the period 1969-2016. A total of 7620 records were compiled from state, federal, and non-governmental organization databases. The compiled data were for samples of 65 non-anadromous species or species groups in which Hg was analyzed in whole fish or edible flesh, and for which sufficient ancillary data were available for interpretation. This data release provides total Hg concentrations on a wet weight basis, ancillary sample data (e.g., fish length, body part analyzed), collection location information (description, latitude, longitude), and source of original data. This dataset contains field descriptions of soil profiles and chemical analysis results of soil samples collected in the limed (T16) and reference (T24) watersheds of the Honnedaga Liming Study conducted in the watershed of Honnedaga Lake, in the southwestern portion of the Adirondack State Park in New York State, USA. Field measurements of trees, saplings and seedlings in these watersheds are also included. Data were collected in 2012-2013, prior to aerial application of pelletized limestone to T16 October 1-5, 2013, and in 2014-2018 following treatment. Frequency domain electromagnetic induction (FDEM) data were collected in September 2016 near the Agashashok River and its tributaries, within the Noatak National Preserve near Kotzebue, AK to aid in local permafrost mapping. Data were collected with a GEM-2 instrument (1.6 m coil separation, Geophex, Ltd.); a broadband sensor that measures the bulk conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of the subsurface to approximately 5-10 meters depth. The instrument is hand carried by a single operator and data are collected at walking speeds.

The upper Esopus Creek is the primary tributary to the Ashokan Reservoir, part of the New York City (NYC) water supply system. Suspended-sediment concentration (ssc) and turbidity are primary water-quality concerns in the NYC water-supply system, particularly in the upper Esopus Creek watershed. In 2016 the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Geological Survey entered into a collaborative agreement to conduct a comprehensive study of suspended sediment and turbidity in the upper Esopus Creek watershed. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data for samples collected from eleven large river sites throughout the United States, from June through October 2018. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected as part of a National Water Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin occurrence in the Nation's large rivers. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundance (reported as both natural units and cells) is reported.

This data release contains the output from a Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) model (Westenbroek and others, 2010), used to estimate potential recharge to the Long Island regional aquifer system from 1900-2019. Output data for two SWB simulations are included. The first simulation uses available land-use/land-cover datasets to estimate recharge with changing land use from 1900-2019 (referred to as the post-development simulation). The second simulation assumed a forested, undeveloped (predevelopment simulation) condition across Long Island for the same period. This U.S. Geological Survey data release provides surface-water quality, streamflow, and groundwater-elevation data collected within the Central Pine Barrens (CPB) Region of Suffolk County, New York, from October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021. This data release contains results of a high-water mark survey across Upstate New York following flash flooding during July 9-10, 2023. The survey was conducted between July 12 and September 20, 2023 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) personnel, and is based on surveyed elevations of mud, debris, and seed lines (Koenig and others, 2016) left by the flooding. This dataset contains a comparison of chemical analysis results obtained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) New York Water Science Center Soil and Low-Ionic Strength Water Quality Laboratory and the Adirondack Lake Survey Corporation (ALSC) Laboratory. Duplicate samples were collected biweekly from Buck Creek and the North and South Tributaries of Buck Creek from September 5, 2006, through September 2, 2008, to be analyzed in each laboratory. This data release contains digital hydrogeologic datasets compiled for eight valley-fill aquifer systems in upstate New York. The data sets include input data necessary to create and interpolate the hydrogeologic framework of the aquifers and surrounding till-covered uplands. Input data is provided as point feature classes and georeferenced files of previously published reports along with the digitized data as line or polygon feature classes. Near-surface geophysical data from within the Bonita Peak Mining District in Silverton, Colorado, USA are presented. These data were collected in 2019. The data include fiber optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) and frequency domain electromagnetic induction (FDEM) data collected in and around roughly 1 km reaches of Cement Creek and California Gulch. Additional data, including ground penetrating radar (GPR) and self potential (SP), were gathered from a peatland that intercepts acid mine drainage from Mogul Mine into Cement Creek. A total of 119 passive seismic soundings were collected with Tromino (MoHo s.r.l.) 3-axis seismometers in the Fountain Creek area to partially refine alluvial aquifer thickness (depth to bedrock) estimates, particularly over known or suspected paleochannels. Data were collected during June 21-24, 2021 with a team of 4-5 people, each equipped with a Tromino Blu or Tromino 3G passive seismometer. Twenty-six time-domain electromagnetic (TDEM) soundings were collected on Shelter Island, New York between March of 2017 and October of 2018. Soundings were collected using the Geonics ProTEM and ABEM WalkTEM acquisition systems. Depending on the size of the site, one of the following square-loop transmitter geometries was used: 1) 20 by 20 meter, 2) 40 by 40 meter, or 3) 100 by 100 meter. A high-frequency receiver with an effective area of 31.4 m^2 was used with the Geonics ProTEM system. In 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), began an appraisal of the sand and gravel aquifers within the Owasco Inlet watershed, which covers about 117 square miles (mi2) and drains north directly to Owasco Lake, one of New York’s Finger Lakes. About three-quarters of the watershed is within Cayuga County; the remaining area (southern end) is in Tompkins County.
