Aspect is the compass direction toward which a slope faces, measured in degrees from North in a clockwise direction from 0 to 360. Aspect was generated using ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, with the USGS National Elevation Dataset as input. For quality information regarding the National Elevation Dataset, see http://nationalmap.gov/elevation.html. These data cover the entire continental U.S. and are a continuous data layer. These raster data have a 30 m x 30 m cell resolution. This aspect data set is considered official foundational data for the GAP species modeling process. The data have been made available provisionally to enhance understanding and use of GAP species data.

The need for integrated and widely accessible sources of species traits data to facilitate studies of ecology, conservation, and management has motivated development of traits databases for various taxa. In spite of the increasing number of traits-based analyses of freshwater fishes in the United States, no consolidated database of traits of this group exists publicly, and much useful information on these species is documented only in obscure sources. The largely inaccessible and unconsolidated traits information makes large-scale analysis involving many fishes and/or traits particularly challenging. We have compiled a database of >100 traits for 809 (731 native and 78 nonnative) fish species found in freshwaters...
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program (WSFR) works with states, insular areas and the District of Columbia to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, their habitats, and the hunting, sport fishing and recreational boating opportunities they provide. The grant programs are administered through the Headquarters Office - Washington, D.C., and eight Regional Offices. The attached csv identifies states associated with each of the eight regions as described on the WSFR webpage.

The dataset includes ecoregion specific species distribution models for 149 common fluvial fishes of the Conterminous U.S. Species models were developed for fluvial fishes considered common and native in each of the nine EPA Wadeable Streams Assessment program aquatic ecoregions (Herlihy et al. 2008) in which the species occurred. Common native species were identified as being geographically widespread and relatively abundant within ecoregions and utilize a wide variety of habitat types. Boosted regression tree models were used to develop presence/absence predictions for each of the National Hydrography Plus Dataset Version 1.0 (NHDPlusV1) stream reaches. The text files provided can be linked to the NHDPlusV1 data...
A subset of information from the National Hydrography Dataset Plus V2.1 that is being used to help drive network analyses in the lower 48 states. This text file was derived from the NHDPlusV21_NationalData_Seamless_Geodatabase_Lower48_07.7z file by exporting attributes from the feature class 'NHDSnapshot/NHDFlowline_Network' to a text file using the Copy Rows geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS Pro. A number of fields were dropped to help reduce the size of the file and to eliminate unneeded information. For all remaining fields the data were unchanged from the source data. For additional information about the NHDPlusV2.1, or for the full dataset see http://www.horizon-systems.com/NHDPlus/NHDPlusV2_home.php.

This ScienceBase Item provides documentation and access to a dynamic query of the Spatial Feature Registry for dam removals that have been associated with a literature source describing the dam removal project and associated scientific studies. The Spatial Feature Registry is a dynamic collection in ScienceBase of geospatial features of importance as long-term, persistently identified items. Dam removal items in the Spatial Feature Registry provide part of the foundation for the National Dam Removal Science Database, a distributed data system with information on the science of dam removal and the basis for the Dam Removal Information Portal. Dam removals in this collection have been quality controlled to the hydrographic...

Fish occurrence data to support high-resolution distribution models and test various community and macroecological hypotheses have not been available at the national scale. We present IchthyMaps, a database of high-quality historical fish occurrences covering fishes of the conterminous United States. Designed on the principles of metacommunity ecology, IchthyMaps is a compilation of presence records from atlases up to 1990, at the resolution of the 1:100,000 National Hydrography Database Plus (NHDPlus) inter-confluence stream segment, readily aggregated into hierarchically coarser units (e.g. hydrologic unit code 8-digit and 12-digit watersheds). IchthyMaps contains about 606,550 presence records for 1,038 species...

The ecotone (i.e., edge) between forested and non-forested environments can be a critical aspect of habitat. We grouped land cover types - ecological systems, human land use, and water - (subsequently referred to as map units) into forested, non-forested, and shrubland/woodland land cover types to create unique data layers. These data layers can then be buffered at specified distances to identify species' habitats. Aggregated map units can be compared and contrasted to identify areas of transition between these broad categories. They can also be used to identify core areas or contiguous blocks of similar type (i.e., interior) through buffering. This dataset was derived from the GAP National Land Cover data. Forested...
Note: For the latest version of the American Rivers Dam Removal Database see https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.5234068. This is a dynamic collection of dam removals shared with the USGS from American Rivers as part of a collaboration on the USGS National Dam Removal Science Database and the Dam Removal Information Portal. The query, provided by the included ScienceBase web link, retrieves dam removals from the Spatial Feature Registry, a resource of items that have been verified for spatial accuracy. The USGS receives periodic updates on American Rivers dam removal records and runs the records through a quality control process to align them with our system and enter them into the Spatial Feature Registry. Items...

The Land Cover Data - Version 1.0 represents a highly thematically detailed land cover map of the U.S. The map legend includes types described by NatureServe's Ecological Systems Classification (Comer et al. 2002) as well as land use classes described in the National Land Cover Dataset 2001 (Homer et al. 2007). This version of the land cover data was used to support the Gap Analysis Project's vertebrate species modeling efforts. These data cover the entire continental U.S. and are a continuous data layer. These raster data have a 30 m x 30 m cell resolution. This land cover data set is considered official foundational data for the GAP species modeling process. The data have been made available provisionally to enhance...

This database contains type descriptions for natural vegetation at all levels of the U.S. National Vegetation Classification. These descriptions were primarily written by NatureServe ecologists in collaboration with Federal Geographic Data Committee Vegetation Subcommittee and a wide variety of state, federal and private partners as a part of the implementation of the National Vegetation Classification. Formation descriptions were written by the Hierarchy Revisions Working Group. The descriptions are based on consultation with natural resource professionals, published literature, and other vegetation classification systems. The Ecological Society of America’s Panel on Vegetation Classification is responsible for...

Note: This item is being used in a data pipeline that supports the Dam Removal Information Portal. We recommend users directly access the American River's Dam Removal Database from Figshare: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.5234068. In the last century, the U.S. led the world in dam building for many purposes, including hydropower, irrigation, flood control and water storage. While dams can benefit society, they also cause considerable harm to rivers. Dams have depleted fisheries, degraded river ecosystems, and altered recreational opportunities on nearly all of our nation’s rivers. Today, many dams that were once at the epicenter of a community’s livelihood are now old, unsafe or no longer serving their intended...
