The National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility (NSF-ICF) - formerly the U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) - is a facility for storing, curating, and studying meteoric ice cores recovered from glaciated regions of the world. NSF-ICF provides scientists with the capability to conduct examinations and measurements on ice cores, and it preserves the integrity of these ice cores in a long-term repository for current and future investigations.

This collection contains test-hole cores through surficial sediments and shallow bedrock drilled by the Nebraska Geological Survey (Conservation and Survey Division), the Nebraska Department of Roads, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other organizations, including bedrock cores drilled by petroleum and mineral concerns. A portion of the cores in this collection originated from oil producing areas and areas with potential petroleum development within the Panhandle region of western Nebraska. These cores were drilled by oil companies between 1950-1969 and were later donated to the Nebraska Geological Survey (Conservation and Survey Division). With the assistance of the National Geological and Geophysical...

The Aquatic Gap Project represents the portion of the USGS Gap Analysis Project that focuses on aquatic species found in coastal and inland waters. The goal of the National Aquatic GAP is to evaluate aquatic biological diversity and habitats using spatial analysis and species distribution models to identify gaps in species protection or threats to habitats in order to work toward more effective conservation planning and prioritization. Our current efforts are focused on modeling the rangewide distribution of fish species which are wide ranging, non-habitat specialist, and of specific interest to our natural resource management agency and conservation partners.

The Silica Collection consists of descriptions for 51 outcrop samples collected as part of an evaluation of potential high-silica resources in the western region of Virginia. Sampling was conducted in conjunction with reconnaissance field mapping to determine the extent of high-silica deposits. The record for each sample consists of a physical description, location information, sieve analysis, and chemical test data. The results of laboratory analyses are included in several published reports including DGMR Publications 32, 67 and Mineral Resources Report 11.

These raster datasets represent output from the Boreal ALFRESCO (Alaska Frame Based Ecosystem Code) model. Boreal ALFRESCO operates on an annual time step, in a landscape composed of 1 x 1 km pixels, a scale appropriate for interfacing with mesoscale climate and carbon models. The last four digits of the file name specifies the year represented by the raster. For example a file named Age_years_historical_1990.tif represents the year 1990. Cell values represent the age of vegetation in years since last fire, with zero (0) indicating burned area in that year. Coverage of this dataset includes much of the state of Alaska (but does exclude Southeastern AK, Kodiak Island, portions of the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian...
Geologic samples including hand samples and thin sections that were collected between 1955 and 1956 by Helen Foster and Harold May during the geologic mapping of the Pacific islands of Ryukyu that extend southwest from Japan. Most of the samples were collected from Ishigaki Island and were analyzed to interpret the geology of Ishigaki in USGS Professional Paper 399-A. Ruth Deike of the USGS Geologic Division began an inventory of the samples and thin sections in 2007, but the samples were soon after sent to the Core Research Center for storage. The inventory of the samples was completed by Chris Stuckey of the Core Research Center with a total of 807 hand samples and thin sections. Supplementary data has been added...

These maps show baseline (1961-1990) average total precipitation and projected change in precipitation for the decades spanning 2010-2039, 2040-2069, and 2070-2099. Precipitation is expressed in both millimeters (mm) and inches (in); projected change in precipitation is expressed as percent of baseline. Baseline results for 1961-1990 are derived from Climate Research Unit (CRU) TS 3.1.01 data and maps for future time periods are based on a composite of projections from five GCMs (CCSM4, GFDL-CM3, GISS-E2-R, IPSL-CM5A-LR, and MRI-CGCM3) under the AR5-RCP 6.0. Data courtesy of Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning.

This ScienceBase community is the archive of ReSciColl (Registry of Scientific Collections), formerly the National Digital Catalog, of the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP). The ReSciColl Dashboard housing ReSciColl Map, ReSciColl Inventory, and Collections Management is available at ReSciColl - Registry of Scientific Collections (usgs.gov). ReSciColl includes metadata records describing geological, geophysical and biological collections and data managed by state geological surveys and USGS. These collections include rock samples, thin sections, field notebooks, photographs, maps, datasets, and others. Collections are described using metadata elements identified by the NGGDPP...

In 2008, DGMR received by donation from the University of Virginia (UVA) a large collection of rock, mineral, and fossil specimens that was at risk of imminent disposal or dispersal due to the lack of adequate storage facilities. The collection includes many valuable and irreplaceable geologic specimens collected in Virginia by UVA students, faculty, and geoscientists from the early Virginia Geological Survey. Parts of the collection were at one time displayed in the Lewis Brooks Hall of Natural Science, which opened in 1877. Following the closure of the UVA Department of Geology in the 1960s, the collection was moved to various warehouse storage areas, where it was largely forgotten and inadequately preserved....
This collection of metadata is harvested from the CSAS Metadata Clearinghouse, which serves as an aggregator for metadata from across many USGS science centers.
