Collections of physical samples and data managed and preserved by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The separate collections are managed by different projects and Mission Areas of the USGS. The collections are distributed across the United States, in various USGS offices. Preservation of some of these collections may be supported by the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program. USGS strives to publicly expose its materials, data, and other research to further scientific inquiry. Points of contact for individual collections may be contacted to request access to materials and data.
New version for 2023. This collection consolidates the IGS Oil and Gas database, documents, logs, and LAS files, superseding collections “Collection of Well logs from Idaho” and “Idaho oil and gas well data.” These files include information on current and historical oil and gas exploration wells in Idaho provided by companies to the Oil and Gas Commission from 1903-2022. This data was transferred to the Idaho Geological Survey in 2009 from the Idaho Department of Lands, who regulates and maintains data for recent/current oil and gas exploration in Idaho. The Idaho Geological Survey maintains files on two hundred fourteen oil and gas wells in the state. Some files contain drilling service reports, geophysical logs,...

These catalogs serve to identify known locations of mineral extraction and exploration activities discussed for the purpose of eventually discovering these data through the Mines web map application. These tables of information will reduce data entry time through use of queries to generate records. They also help identify properties without a clear location for efficient discussion with the original authors.

The maps show baseline (1961-1990) average air temperature and projected air temperature for the decades spanning 2010-2039, 2040-2069, and 2070-2099. Temperature is expressed in both Celsius (у) and Fahrenheit (ц). Baseline results for 1961-1990 are derived from Climate Research Unit (CRU) TS 3.1. data and maps for future time periods are based on a composite of projections from five GCMs (CCSM4, GFDL-CM3, GISS-E2-R, IPSL-CM5A-LR, and MRI-CGCM3) under the AR5-RCP 6.0. Data courtesy of Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning.

This is a collection of GIF-format animations and PNG images that are suitable for presentations. These products include images for the baseline period (1961-1990) and images for each decade between 2010 and 2090. Baseline values are derived from Climate Research Unit (CRU) TS 3.1. or TS 3.1.01 data; values for future time periods are based on the SNAP 5-GCM composite under the AR5-RCP 6.0 and AR5-RCP 8.5. CRU and GCM data are provided courtesy of Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning (SNAP).Air temperature is expressed in units of Celsius (у) and Fahrenheit (ц) and precipitation is available in units of millimeters (mm) and inches (in). Special note about animations: The first image of the animation...

This collection contains test-hole cores through surficial sediments and shallow bedrock drilled by the Nebraska Geological Survey (Conservation and Survey Division), the Nebraska Department of Roads, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other organizations, including bedrock cores drilled by petroleum and mineral concerns. A portion of the cores in this collection originated from oil producing areas and areas with potential petroleum development within the Panhandle region of western Nebraska. These cores were drilled by oil companies between 1950-1969 and were later donated to the Nebraska Geological Survey (Conservation and Survey Division). With the assistance of the National Geological and Geophysical...

These raster datasets represent output from the Boreal ALFRESCO (Alaska Frame Based Ecosystem Code) model. Boreal ALFRESCO operates on an annual time step, in a landscape composed of 1 x 1 km pixels, a scale appropriate for interfacing with mesoscale climate and carbon models. The last four digits of the file name specifies the year represented by the raster. For example a file named Age_years_historical_1990.tif represents the year 1990. Cell values represent the age of vegetation in years since last fire, with zero (0) indicating burned area in that year. Coverage of this dataset includes much of the state of Alaska (but does exclude Southeastern AK, Kodiak Island, portions of the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian...

Geologic samples including hand samples and thin sections that were collected between 1955 and 1956 by Helen Foster and Harold May during the geologic mapping of the Pacific islands of Ryukyu that extend southwest from Japan. Most of the samples were collected from Ishigaki Island and were analyzed to interpret the geology of Ishigaki in USGS Professional Paper 399-A. Ruth Deike of the USGS Geologic Division began an inventory of the samples and thin sections in 2007, but the samples were soon after sent to the Core Research Center for storage. The inventory of the samples was completed by Chris Stuckey of the Core Research Center with a total of 807 hand samples and thin sections. Supplementary data has been added...

History:This collection of geologic, mine, and related maps was compiled and used by S. Warren Hobbs for his research on the Coeur d’alene Mining District, Idaho - Professional Paper 478 (1965).The Coeur d’Alene Study:General geology of the Coeur d’Alene district, one of the larger lead-, zinc-, and silver-producing areas of the world, is presented. The geology was remapped at a scale of 1:24,000 and compiled on five maps from west to east as follows: Smelterville, Kellogg, Wallace, Mullan, and Pottsville. Bedrock, primarily the Precambrian Belt Series which forms the host rock for the ore, is a thick conformable geosynclinal group of fine-grained clastics. Igneous rocks are principally two groups of small monzonitic...

Since its inception in 1879, the USGS has collected and preserved geoscience data and sample collections, which include millions of paleobiological specimens stored in USGS facilities and at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington, D.C. As one of the largest paleontological collections in the world, the USGS paleontology collection is invaluable, as many specimens may no longer be collected due to high field collection costs or inaccessibility to sampling sites, which have been restricted, urbanized, or modified via landscape processes. The USGS Denver Paleontology Collection includes ~1.2 million specimens stored in 1000 Smithsonian museum cases. The primary collections...

These raster datasets are output from the Geophysical Institute Permafrost Lab (GIPL) model and represent simulated active layer thickness (ALT) in meters averaged across a decade. These data were generated by driving the GIPL model with a composite of five GCM model outputs for the A1B emissions scenario. The file name specifies the decade the raster represents. For example, a file named ALT_1980_1989.tif represents the decade spanning 1980-1989. Cell values represent simulated maximum depth (in meters) of thaw penetration (for areas with permafrost) or frost penetration (for areas without permafrost). If the value of the cell is positive, the area is underlain by permafrost and the cell value specifies the depth...

The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NWB LCC) is a partnership between agencies involved in land management across Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia. The NWB LCC aims to coordinate science and support to decision makers for improving land management decisions. Knowledge gaps have been identified by the NWB LCC and are beginning to be filled. One of the priority information gaps is knowledge of the anthropogenic footprint currently on the landscape. The anthropogenic footprint is all the disturbance types made by various human activities, usually through some form of industrial development. Examples include roads, power lines, pipelines, and clear cuts among many others....
