Across the country, public land managers make hundreds of decisions each year that influence landscapes and ecosystems within the lands they manage. Many of these decisions involve vegetation manipulations known as land treatments. Land treatments include activities such as removal or alteration of plant biomass, seeding burned areas, and herbicide applications. Data on these land treatments historically have been stored at local offices and gathering information across large spatial areas was difficult. These valuable data needed to be centralized and stored for Federal agencies involved in land treatments because these data are useful to land managers for policy and management and to scientists for developing...

Remote camera stations were set up in Lassen Volcanic National Park from August to October 2017 and June to September 2018 to document occurrence of mesocarnivores and other wildlife. 126 cameras were set up at 32 primary sampling units (clusters of two to four cameras) throughout the park. Random locations for primary sampling units were chosen using a 3-km sampling grid over the park area. The dataset contains all species observed within the study time-frame, the date and time of observation and the number of individuals detected as well as identification for individual locations, cameras and images. Of the three target species of conservation concern (Pacific fisher (Pekania pennanti), Pacific marten (Martes...

Lidar-derived digital elevation models often contain a vertical bias due to vegetation. In areas with tidal influence the amount of bias can be ecologically significant, for example, by decreasing the expected inundation frequency. We generated a corrected digital elevation mode (DEM) for Suisun marsh using a modification of the Lidar Elevation Adjustment with NDVI (LEAN) technique (Buffington et al. 2016). GPS survey data (6912 points, collected across public and private land in 2018), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from an airborne multispectral image (June 2018), a 1 m lidar DEM from September 2018, and a 1 m canopy surface model were used to generate models of predicted bias across the...

Note: An error was discovered in the BenthicBiomas Table, mostly in designation of BDLs and zeros. Data are undergoing further QC and the corrected dataset will be posted soon. This dataset records Cladophora and associated submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) biomass collected approximately monthly during the growing season of 2018 at stations located along the U.S. shoreline of Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. It also records a variety of supporting data collected at Cladophora measurement stations. These supporting data include: - seasonal time series of light, currents, wave action, temperature, specific conductivity, turbidity, pH, phycocyanin, chlorophyll, and dissolved oxygen from moored sensors...

Note: this data release has been superseded by version 5.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/F7HT2NNP Ice breakup dates of Chequamegon Bay, Lake Superior from 1911 to 2021 were compiled by Lori Evrard (USGS, GLSC, Lake Superior Biological Station, Ashland, WI). Ice breakup date is the day in spring when winter ice cover substantially leaves a water body. Local residents deem "ice breakup" as when the ice moves northeast of a line straight across Chequamegon Bay out from Ellis Avenue (State highway 13). Another way ice breakup was determined has been if you could drive a boat from the outlet of Fish Creek to Houghton Point. The ice may move back and forth over that line but the ice is breaking up, moving...

These data were compiled as part of a long-term (1964 - 2022) water quality monitoring program at Lake Powell. Objectives of our study were to release a consistent record of long-term water quality data. The 58-year limnology dataset captures some water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, major ions, total suspended solids) from reservoir filling to present day. It also contains a 38-year record of secchi depth, and a ~30-year record of nutrients, phytoplankton, and zooplankton assemblages. The data were collected from various sites within the Lake Powell reservoir and the Glen Canyon dam. Regular monthly sampling occurred at three sites near the dam and reservoir-wide sampling was generally conducted quarterly,...

This dataset contains predictions of habitat suitability of reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) in Upper Mississippi River floodplain forest understories from Pool 3 to Pool 13. Predictions were created using three machine learning algorithms (Bayesian additive regression trees, boosted trees, and random forest). This dataset contains rasters that provide habitat suitability predictions for each 12m raster cell that had forested landcover in 2010. In addition to one raster for each of the three algorithms an ensemble (mean prediction of all three algorithms) prediction raster for each pool is provided. The presence/absence observations used to train the model are contained in a .csv file with each plot location....

Data were collected for the purpose of quantifying downstream transport of aquatic carbon and exchange fluxes of dissolved carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) from streams. Parameters include daily mean discharge, dissolved COâ‚‚, water temperature, atmospheric pressure, dissolved oxygen, fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM), nitrate, specific conductance, turbidity, and corrected fDOM from 10/1/2010 to 9/30/2019 (DailyData.csv). Potentially suitable habitat for the American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) was identified within the Southern Plains. The American burying beetle (ABB) is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, but in 2019 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to reclassify this species as threatened. We applied a deductive model for the ABB that identified potentially suitable habitat using LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Types (EVT). The habitat model ranked each EVT using one of four categories: (1) favorable; suitable vegetation to support all or critical portions of the ABB life cycle, (2) conditional; favorable only under certain conditions including seasonality of flooding and land management...

We tested the utility of a protocol using genetic markers that previously proved successful to identify the sex of Vespertilionid bats on tissues collected from live bats and carcasses of varying age from the Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus semotus). This molecular method is based on genes unique to X and Y chromosomes in mammals and previously was used successfully on North American hoary bats (L. cinereus). Using genotyping, we determined the sex of 123 of 125 Hawaiian hoary bat tissue samples from carcasses. This dataset includes all 73 samples from the original data release, plus 58 additional samples. NOTE: While previous versions are available from the author, all the records in previous versions can be found...

This data contains coordinate locations for suspected historical spawning locations of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and cisco (Coregonus artedi) across the Lake Erie basin, including the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair River. Data points were summarized using ArcGIS 10.5. Data came from published and unpublished sources cited in the Atlas of the Spawning and Nursery Areas of Great Lakes Fishes (Goodyear et al. 1982) and other sources as described. Data points included were specific locations described as having the presence of eggs or spawning fish. Pseudo-absence data used for comparison purposes are also provided in this data release. We developed habitat suitability models for invasive plant species selected by Department of Interior land management agencies. We applied the modeling workflow developed in Young et al. 2020 to species not included in the original case studies. Our methodology balanced trade-offs between developing highly customized models for a few species versus fitting non-specific and generic models for numerous species. We developed a national library of environmental variables known to physiologically limit plant distributions (Engelstad et al. 2022 Table S1: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0263056) and relied on human input based on natural history knowledge to further narrow the variable set for each species before...
