The files consist of six .csv files, with two files for each of three experiments (2017_05_16, 2017_05_17, 2017_05_18). One of the two files contain high-resolution data (1000 Hz) collected during the period of slope failure only, and the other files contain low-resolution data (10 Hz) for the entire duration of an experiment. Each of these files contains multiple columns of data, with each column representing either a time measurement or the value of a physical quantity measured at that time (e.g., flow depth, pore pressure, normal stress, etc.). In addition, 289 pairs of images were extracted from two video cameras during the sediment failure on May 17 2017. First posted - April 24, 2019 (available from author)...

The U.S. Geological Survey Toxic Substances Hydrology Program Cape Cod Research site has been the subject of intensive hydrological and geochemical investigations. The site has multiple sources of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), including perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), for which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued health advisories because of potential adverse human health effects. During 2014 and 2015, groundwater contamination by PFASs from a fire-training area and a wastewater treatment facility effluent infiltration beds, located on Joint Base Cape Cod, was assessed by collecting groundwater samples and sediment cores (Figures 1 and 2). The water...

Researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and their collaborators conducted a study of the geochemical properties of coals currently produced for electric power generation in the Illinois Basin in Illinois and Indiana. The study follows from recommendations by an expert panel for the USGS to investigate the distribution and controls of trace constituents such as mercury (Hg) in Illinois Basin coals and the behavior of these constituents in coal preparation. A total of 72 new samples were collected by USGS collaborators. These samples include raw coals, prepared coals, and waste coals from coal preparation. To understand the geochemistry and cleaning behavior of these coals, these samples were subjected to...

On November 4-7, 2019, bathymetric data were collected on the Sandusky River between Tiffin and Fremont, Ohio. Wading measurements were made at cross-sections shallower than about 1 foot using a survey pole with a Trimble R10 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver connected to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) real-time virtual reference station (VRS) network. Cross-sections that were deeper than about 1 foot were measured with a CEE-ECHO single-beam echosounder mounted to a canoe. A Trimble R10 GNSS receiver connected to the ODOT real-time VRS network was mounted directly above the echosounder and integrated with the echosounder data collection unit to convert measured depths to bed elevations....

This dataset was created to assess the status of Lahontan cutthroat trout (*Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi*) habitat. Surveys were conducted within occupied Lahontan cutthroat trout habitat, as designated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Data represent reach-based surveys conducted in accordance with the Lahontan cutthroat trout habitat status assessment (LCTHSA) protocol (USGS). LCTHSA uses a probabalistic sampling design (i.e., Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified), standardized collection of habitat attributes, electronic data capture and management, and integration with remote sensing and geospatially-derived data products. Data were collected and managed by the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Fish...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in partnership with several federal agencies, has developed and released five National Land Cover Database (NLCD) products over the past two decades: NLCD 1992, 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016. The 2016 release saw landcover created for additional years of 2003, 2008, and 2013. These products provide spatially explicit and reliable information on the Nation’s land cover and land cover change. To continue the legacy of NLCD and further establish a long-term monitoring capability for the Nation’s land resources, the USGS has designed a new generation of NLCD products named NLCD 2019. The NLCD 2019 design aims to provide innovative, consistent, and robust methodologies for production of...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, used streamflow measurements at 14 partial-record sites and related them to nearby USGS real-time streamgages (index sites) to provide daily mean streamflow values at ungaged (partial-record) sites. Daily mean streamflow was estimated by developing a regression relationship between streamflow at each partial-record site and the index site for the period of record of the index site. The daily mean streamflow at partial-record sites will support the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho effort to understand fish and wildlife habitat in the watershed and provide streamflow estimates for Kootenai River tributaries for use in hydraulic modeling that...

The data comprise an archive of repeated surveyed measurements to monitor surface fault creep (a form of gradual tectonic movement) occurring along active faults in the San Francisco Bay region for use by the scientific research community. Additional description of these data and the methods used to collect them is provided at: https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2009/1119/. The primary data are angle measurements surveyed using an electronic theodolite on about ninety alignment arrays that cross the region's major faults, which enables detection of any significant rate changes over time from long-term rates of aseismic fault displacement. These primary measurement data, and resulting long-term average creep rates of each...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data collected from 18 Texas reservoirs during August through October, 2016. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. This data release was produced in compliance with the open data requirements as a way to make scientific products associated with USGS research efforts and publications available to the public. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at each of the sites. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundance (density reported as both natural units and cells) and biovolume are reported.
Boreal ecosystems comprise about one tenth of the world’s land surface and contain over 20 % of the global soil carbon (C) stocks. Boreal soils are unique in that the mineral soil is covered by what can be quite thick layers of organic soil. These organic soil layers, or horizons, can differ in their state of decomposition, source vegetation, and disturbance history. These differences result in varying soil properties (bulk density, C content, and nitrogen (N) content) among soil horizons. These data were used in a manuscript (https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-2019-114) where these soil properties, as represented by over 3000 samples from Interior Alaska, were summarized. We also examined how soil drainage and stand...
