Collection of Coal Field Measured Sections from Tennessee This Collection of Coal Field Measured Sections consists of handwritten descriptions of rock unit sequences measured along roads, railroads, trails, and strip mine highwalls in the Tennessee coal fields. Most of the collection is composed of sections measured by Dr. Harold Wanless during his study of the southern Appalachian coal fields in the late 1930's. Most of the sections are unpublished, except for being included as columnar section illustrations in - Wanless, H.R., 1946, Pennsylvanian geology of a part of the southern Appalachian coal field: Geological Society of America Memoir, 13, 162 p. Other measured sections in this collection originate from published and unpublished sources. Drill hole depths range from tens to thousands of feet deep. Individual drill holes were originally located by using the Tennessee State Plane Coordinate System (NAD 27). Quadrangles with abundant drill holes have accompanying drill hole location maps.
