Burnsville Cove in Bath and Highland Counties (Virginia, USA) is a karst region in the Valley and Ridge Province of the Appalachian Mountains. The region contains many caves in Silurian to Devonian limestone, and is well suited for examining geologic controls on cave location and cave passage morphology. In Burnsville Cove, many caves are located preferentially near the axes of synclines and anticlines. For example, Butler Cave is an elongate cave where the trunk channel follows the axis of Sinking Creek syncline and most of the side passages follow joints at right angles to the syncline axis. In contrast, the Water Sinks Subway Cave, Owl Cave, and Helictite Cave have abundant maze patterns, and are located near...

This dataset provides cost estimates for 668 dam removal projects occurring in the United States. Cost estimates were obtained by searching the internet for sources of information that mention the cost of dam removal projects listed in the USGS Dam Removal Information Portal. When cost data were not available for a dam removal but contact information was, then personal communications were used to acquire additional cost information. The accuracy of estimates is not known but we assume that most estimates represent close to the total cost or the minimum financial cost, with overestimates being rare. Total cost information could include component costs related to project planning, dam deconstruction cost, and several...

Wetlands are frequently used in the U.S. for treating nitrate in agricultural runoff. However, numerous other biologically active contaminants, such as antibiotics and nitrification inhibitors, regularly co-occur with nitrate and many can affect the efficiency of nitrate removal. This project evaluated the discrete and combined effects of specific veterinary and human antibiotics and a common nitrification inhibitor (nitrapyrin) on nitrate-N treatment efficiency in saturated sediments and floating treatment wetlands. Sediment and water samples were collected from 3 locations at the USDA Meat Animal Research Facility near Clay Center NE in August 2019 for assessment of background conditions in order to determine...

The Wyoming statewide time-stamped oil and gas wells shapefile was developed to provide a historical perspective of drilling activity for the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). This product approximates start and stop dates for each well in Wyoming based on database attributes. These data originated from the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC). Data represent 120 years of oil and gas drilling (1900 to 2020) and will facilitate a landscape-level approach to integrated science-based assessments, resource management, and land-use decision making. Oil and gas data from WOGCC were used in a dataset previously published by Biewick in 2010 (https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/625/). This product expands...

Field measurements of water depth were acquired from a reach of the upper American River in California, November 5-7, 2018, to support research on mapping chinook salmon spawning locations (redds) via remote sensing. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the shallow channel margins with RTK GPS receivers and measuring water surface elevations along the water's edge and bed elevations within the channel; depths were calculated by subtracting bed elevations from the nearest water surface elevation. For the deeper areas representing most of the channel, depths were recorded along a series of cross-sections by a SonTek RiverSurveyor S5 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed...

This data release includes images and field measurements used to map chinook salmon spawning locations along the American River near Sacramento, California, via remote sensing; the data were collected November 5-7, 2018. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a spectrally based technique for identifying salmon spawning locations, known as redds, from various types of remotely sensed data. Traditionally, redds have been mapped by eye while walking the bank or from a boat, or by an observer in an aircraft or an interpreter visually examining aerial images. The goal of this proof-of-concept investigation was to assess the potential for more efficient, objective, and automated redd mapping from conventional...

Seabeach amaranth (Amaranthus pumilus) is a plant species that was once prevalent on beaches of the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast but is now listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For much of the 20th century, seabeach amaranth was absent from the mid-Atlantic coast and thought to be extinct, presumably as a result of increased development and recreational pressure. One region where there has been an effort to restore the seabeach amaranth population is Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), a National Park Service land holding located along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. Here, the Natural Resources staff at ASIS planted seabeach amaranth cultivars for three growing seasons from 1999...
