The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected rock magnetic susceptibility and density measurements to understand the causative sources of airborne magnetic and ground gravity survey anomalies in the Wet Mountains, Colorado. A total of 609 magnetic susceptibility and 86 density measurements were collected from outcrops and hand samples, respectively, from July 2022 to June 2023. These measurements aid the interpretation of newly collected geophysical data to identify concealed Ediacaran-Ordovician alkaline igneous features and potential rare earth element deposits. On average, 16 magnetic susceptibility and 4 density measurements were taken from each outcrop/hand sample to best represent the lithology. Outcrop/sample...

A total of 27 temperature sensors were deployed along the lower 90 miles of the Yakima River at 7 locations where cold water had been previously observed. These 7 cold-water areas had 3 to 6 temperature sensors installed to document the extent and duration of these cold-water areas and their impacts on mainstem temperatures of the Lower Yakima River. Cold-water areas included the mouths of tributaries, alongside channels, and within alcoves. Sensor deployments ranged from 1 to 2 years beginning in October 2018. All temperature data are included in the Yakima.temperatures.zip folder. Details of each monitoring location are provided in the site.locs.csv file. In addition to the raw data and site location information,...

Seepage meters measurements were collected at three locations along the northern shoreline and at three locations along the southern shoreline of Crystal Lake, located in the City of Crystal Lake, Illinois on October 28-30, 2020, and November 4-5, 2020. Seepage measurements directly measure the flux for the area captured by the seepage meter. A positive (gaining) flux is assumed when the volume in the collection bag increases and negative (losing) if the volume decreases and the data can also be used to calculate the vertical hydraulic conductivity. The data provided contains the measurements collected at each location and calculations of discharge and flux at each of the seepage meters.
The Maumee River transports huge loads of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to Lake Erie. The increased concentrations of N and P are causing eutrophication of the lake, creating hypoxic zones, and contributing to phytoplankton blooms. It is hypothesized that the P loads are a major contributor to harmful algal blooms that occur in the western basin of Lake Erie, particularly in summer. The Maumee River has been identified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a priority watershed where action needs to be taken to reduce nutrient loads. This study quantified rates of biogeochemical processes affecting downstream flux of N and P by 1) measuring indices of potential sediment P retention and 2) measuring...

These data were compiled for a networked field-trial restoration experiment (RestoreNet) that spans the southwestern US, including 21 distributed field sites. The objective of our study was to understand the environmental factors and restoration practices (including seed mixes and soil manipulation) that increase plant establishment and survival to ultimate improve restoration outcomes in dryland environments. These data represent point-in-time plant density and height measurements at our field sites at the time of monitoring. These data were collected at 21 arid and semi-arid sites, located throughout Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and California. These data were collected by USGS Restoration Assessment and Monitoring...

The 1983-2018 Puʻuʻōʻō eruption, on the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano, consisted of many different episodes and several phases of lava flows threatening residential areas (Heliker and Mattox 2003; Orr and others 2015). One of these crises occurred in 2014-2015, when lava erupting from Puʻuʻōʻō advanced north of the rift zone, towards the town of Pāhoa (Poland and others 2016; Brantley and others 2019). This slow-moving crisis unfolded over approximately four months, as pāhoehoe lava gradually flowed towards the town. In the end, the lava flow fortunately stalled at the edge of the residential area, destroying only one home. During the crisis, geologists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano...

In a study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, detectable concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were found in the soil at every site despite targeting locations with no known PFAS sources (Santangelo and others, 2022). The widespread distribution of PFAS concentrations in New Hampshire has since sparked critical interest into understanding whether recharge to groundwater contains significant concentrations of PFAS after infiltration through soils. To address this concern, the USGS implemented a pilot study designed to evaluate whether PFAS infiltrate through shallow soil into shallow groundwater. Five sites were selected...

These data were compiled for a study that investigated the effects of drought seasonality and plant community composition in a dryland ecosystem. In 2015 U.S. Geological Survey ecologists recorded vegetation and soil moisture data in 36 experimental plots which manipulated precipitation in two plant community types. The experiment consisted of three precipitation treatments: control (ambient precipitation), cool-season drought (-66% ambient precipitation November-April), and warm-season drought (-66% ambient precipitation May-October), applied in two plant communities (perennial grasses with or without a large shrub, Ephedra viridis) over a three-year period. These data were collected from 2015 to 2022 near Canyonlands...

Individual point estimates of stream density by juvenile salmonid species in two small tributaries to the Salmon River, Lake Ontario, New York were recorded. Enumeration of salmonid species was observed using a backpack electrofisher in order to identify fish species. Stream density estimates were calculated using stream width measurements taken at equally spaced transects. Comparisons of species densities between the two streams were analyzed to infer competition or segregation.
