Vegetation and land cover of Blue Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, circa 2011. This dataset is based on interpretation of aerial imagery from the National Agricultural Imagery Program from 2010. Image classification was performed using eCognition software, which creates homogeneous polygons from the imagery. Image statistics such as texture, NDVI and spectral values were then calculated for each polygon used to classify the imagery. Field data was collected in August, 2011 to assist in the image interpretation. No additional field data were collected for validation, and no validation or accuracy assessment was completed for this dataset. Therefore, no estimates of accuracy are given.

This dataset is a compilation of forest insect, disease and abiotic damage mapped by aerial detection surveys on forested areas in the United States. At this time, the National Aerial Survey Data Standards require only mortality and defoliation data be collected and reported. However, many cooperators collect data on other types of damage and therefore, the national database has been designed to accommodate these data. Low-level flights, typically 1,000 to 2,000 feet above ground level, are used to map forest damage. Observers use paper maps, typically 1:100,000 scale USGS maps, upon which they record the damage. The central Platte River Valley represents a key mid-latitude stopover This dataset supports a contemporary analysis of nocturnal roost selection for sandhill cranes staging along the Platte River during 2003-2007. We explored variation in selection for previously established characteristics of roost sites, including river channel width, vegetation height along the river bank, and distance to nearest disturbance feature. This analysis also included novel environmental factors (yearly estimates of corn near roost sites, nightly temperature, wind speed, and river discharge) and how they may interact with the more established characteristics.

A comprehensive list of 38 categories of anthropogenic drivers of change in marine ecosystems developed through expert workshops (S1) was assessed for data availability on a global scale. We intentionally did not further subdivide these categories into unique drivers (e.g. each specific type of pollutant) as this would lead to over-emphasis of certain activities when impacts are summed.
