Note: This data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. Two types of passive samplers for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) analysis were deployed in the Clinton River Area of Concern in 2019: semipermeable membrane devices for water and in-stream sediment samplers. Samplers were deployed in July 2019 and retrieved in August 2019. Additionally, bank sediment samples for PCB analysis were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in August 2019 and catch basin bottom material samples for PCB analysis were collected by LimnoTech in November 2019 under contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These data are a part of a larger study and associated USGS report (https://doi.org/TBD).

In addition, surveys from the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DGGS): Airborne GeophysWeb, the Bureau of Land Management, the Department of Energy and other state agencies have also been included. The surveys have contributed to studies under USGS programs including Water, Geologic Mapping, Minerals, Energy, Environmental Health, Ecosystems,...

The Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) Program assesses the frequency, extent, and magnitude (size and severity) of all large wildland fires (wildfires and prescribed fires) in the conterminous United States (CONUS), Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico for the period 1984 and beyond. All fires reported as greater than 1,000 acres in the western U.S. and greater than 500 acres in the eastern U.S. are mapped across all ownerships. MTBS produces a series of geospatial and tabular data for analysis at a range of spatial, temporal, and thematic scales and are intended to meet a variety of information needs that require consistent data about fire effects through space and time. This map layer is a thematic raster image...

Note: this data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. A water-supply plan is being developed for Wake County, North Carolina, in accordance with the 50-year planning window used by the North Carolina Division of Water Resources for residents in unincorporated areas of the county. To develop this supply plan, Wake County seeks to better understand the sustainability of groundwater resources of the regolith/fractured-rock aquifer system. Slug tests were performed in 17 wells in the Wake County area, during 2020 and 2021, to provide values of horizontal hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity to support the development of Wake County’s water-supply plan. Wake County is in the Piedmont...

A suite of slate samples collected along a 2 km transect crossing the Lishan Fault in central Taiwan were evaluated to assess the role of ductile strain energy in natural graphitization at greenschist facies metamorphic conditions. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging documents phyllosilicate and quartz replacement textures consistent cleavage development via dissolution-precipitation processes that increase in intensity from east to west. X-ray diffraction data reveal an east-to-west linear decrease in the full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) values of the 004 muscovite peaks and shifts towards higher 2θ (lower d) values. Rietveld refinements required two distinct muscovite populations and muscovite microstrain...

A seamless map of the major groundwater areas used by community public supply wells in the United States was needed in order to describe and compute the number of equivalent people using public supply water. This goal was met by the delineation of hydrogeologic mapping units (HMUs). An HMU is a mapped polygon, within which, all public supply wells have a common source of water. The source of water can be either a national Principal Aquifer (PA) as defined in USGS (2003) or a Secondary Hydrogeologic Region (SHR) as defined in Belitz et al. (2018). Collectively, both PAs and SHRs are referred to as Hydrogeologic Regions (HRs). The common source of water can be a single HR or multiple HRs, as HRs can overlap one another....

Note: this data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. This data release accompanies the USGS Techniques and Methods report titled: "The Basin Characterization Model - A Regional Water Balance Software Package", and includes all necessary Basin Characterization Model version 8 (BCMv8) inputs and outputs for water years 1896 to 2022. The BCMv8 was refined from the previous BCMv65 version to improve the accuracy of the water-balance components, particularly the recharge estimate. The new version includes seven new features: (1) monthly vegetation-specific actual evapotranspiration (AET) for 65 vegetation types, (2) spatially distributed calibration coefficients for snow accumulation and...

Note: this data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. Publicly available geospatial data were identified, collated, and analyzed for a region of karst terrain extending from Albany to Buffalo, New York. A series of geospatial datasets were assembled to determine the location and extent of karstic rock; bedrock geology and depth to bedrock; average water-table configuration; surficial geology; soil type, thickness, and hydraulic conductivity; land cover; and closed depressions in the land surface First release: 2021 Revised: July 2022 (ver. 2.0) Revised: October 2022 (ver. 3.0) .
The USGS has published United States water-use data every five years since 1950. To increase the temporal and spatial availability of water use estimates using nationally consistent methods, the USGS is developing national water-use models for each major water-use category. This data release publishes crop irrigation withdrawals for the conterminous United States (CONUS) that are calculated using modeled irrigation consumptive use (Martin and others, 2023), irrigation efficiencies, and source-water proportions (Dieter and others, 2018). Crop irrigation withdrawals and irrigation consumptive use refer to water removed and consumed, respectively, from a groundwater or surface-water source to produce agricultural crops....

The CoRE (Contractions or Range Expansions) database contains a library of published literature and data on species range shifts in response to climate change. Through a systematic review of publications returned from searches on Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus, we selected primary research articles that documented or attempted to document species-level distribution shifts in animal or plant species in response to recent anthropogenic climate change. We extracted data in four broad categories: (i) basic study information (study duration, location, data quality and methodological factors); (ii) basic species information (scientific names and taxonomic groups); (iii) information on the observed range shifts...

Saline tidal wetlands are important sites of carbon sequestration and produce negligible methane (CH4) emissions due to regular inundation with sulfate-rich seawater. Yet, widespread management of coastal hydrology has restricted vast areas of coastal wetlands to tidal exchange. These ecosystems often undergo impoundment and freshening, which in turn cause vegetation shifts like invasion by Phragmites, that affect ecosystem carbon balance. Understanding controls of carbon exchange in these understudied ecosystems is critical for informing climate consequences of blue carbon restoration and/or management interventions. Here we present measurements of net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane, along...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release presents tabular data on nitrogen concentrations and loads for multiple nitrogen species, and river discharge data used in the analysis of data collected from October 1994 to September 2021. Data on flow and nitrogen concentrations were analyzed using the USGS Exploration and Graphics for RivEr Trends (EGRET) R package, and the method of Weighted Regression on Time Discharge and Season (WRTDS). Data and outputs summarized are for water-quality data collected from 17 water-quality monitoring stations in the Long Island Sound watershed. Specific data in tabular format for this release include: calculated annual nitrogen concentration and loads, calculated annual flow-normalized...

Note: This data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. Mercury (Hg) concentrations and isotopic compositions were collected in sediments, soils, and suspended particulate matter from Gruber's Grove Bay (GGB) and upstream reference sites to inform future remedial efforts. The highest concentrations and isotopic signatures (δ202Hg) were observed in soils collected from historic water settling ponds from the Badger Army Ammunition Plant (BAAP). Sediments from the upper portion of GGB showed higher isotopic compositions than sediments from the Wisconsin River. Hg concentrations in sediments were also higher in the upper portion of GGB and decreased towards the river. Sediments collected...
