This collection is composed of whole-rock and EPMA tephra glass averages geochemical analyses of rocks from Alaskan volcanoes. Most of the data is from published papers, and some of it is unpublished data from AVO. It is contain analyses for approximately 13,000 samples. Nearly all of the collection is stored in a relational database; the collection is published and searchable at https://avo.alaska.edu/geochem/

This collection consists of samples with age data and associated information for available radiometric dates for rocks and minerals in Alaska. The sample records and their associated publications were loaded into the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys division-wide database. A legacy Microsoft Access database exists that includes dates for all available U-Pb, K-Ar, 40Ar/39Ar, and Rb-Sr data for Alaska through 2007. Previous compilations by Wilson and others (1990) and U.S. Geological Survey (1999) provided the initial source of age data. Additional radiometric dates were compiled from both published and unpublished sources. This legacy project added essential basic supporting information that...

This collection is comprised of oil- and gas-related well cores and cuttings from wells drilled to either test for the presence of liquid or gas fossil fuels, examine subsurface stratigraphy and structures, or to produce liquid or gas fossil fuels. All well data in the Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC) database represents both exploration and production wells. Core has been donated by oil and gas exploration companies as well as state and federal agencies. This oil and gas related sample collection includes core, core chip, side wall core, cuttings, and unwashed cutting samples as well as oil and gas related surface and shot-hole samples.

This sample collection consists of a 1997 donation from the Shell Oil Company to the Alaska Geological Materials Center. It contains approximately 68,000 samples of following types: dart (short seafloor cores), seismic shothole, outcrop, and megafossils. 80% of the collection are outcrop samples. 5 percent of the collection has been inventoried with specific locations. Most of the collection is in good shape though many megafossil sample bags need to be replaced. The remainder of the collection will be inventoried in a future data preservation project

Minnesota Geological Survey, in cooperation with industry, sampled the State of Minnesota and adjacent regions for till geochemistry and indicator minerals at a 30-km spacing during summer 2004. Within target cells, each a quarter-degree latitude by a half-degree longitude, till from between about 1 and 2 m depth was sampled by filling a 15 liter plastic pail. At a few sites, vertical profiles were collected. In addition, three transects to the north were sampled, to help identify sediments derived by long-distance glacial transport, to obtain reference samples from the Thompson nickel belt, and also to extend sampling to the limit of Hudson Bay-derived carbonate-bearing sediments, to permit comparison to Minnesota...

All sediment samples from auger holes, outcrops, and cores are processed to determine texture. The 1-2 mm coarse sand fraction is packaged separately, and about half of these fractions are categorized lithologically by a glacial geologist. The data are recorded on paper data sheets and in a database.

Hand specimens of rocks collected as a part of field work conducted primarily by present and former WGNHS staff members. Samples date from the early 20th century to the 1990s and were collected throughout the state. Many of the samples are described in the historical field notebook collection, and relationships between the samples and the field notebooks have been established and captured in identifiers. Locations for samples were taken from field notes, maps, and accession lists. There are approximately 5,700 hand samples in this collection.

This collection contains unpublished, working maps, and cross-sections from a wide range of projects. Some of the documents date back to over 50 years ago. Many of these documents are scanned.

This collection as a whole includes diamond drill core from hardrock/lode mineral prospects that have been donated to the Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC) by private entities or that have been recovered from properties during reclamation of historic mine and exploration sites by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The core is stored in waxed cardboard or plastic boxes. Mineralized portions, and in some cases the entire the core, has been split and sampled. Some core may have been quartered and sampled, or entirely consumed. The condition and completeness of the core varies widely. The individual records listed are comprised of diamond drill core from identified mineral prospects; it may include some coal prospects,...

In 2008, Virginia Department of Energy received by donation from the University of Virginia (UVA) a large collection of rock, mineral, and fossil specimens that was at risk of imminent disposal or dispersal due to the lack of adequate storage facilities. The collection includes many valuable and irreplaceable geologic specimens collected in Virginia by UVA students, faculty, and geoscientists from the early Virginia Geological Survey. Parts of the collection were at one time displayed in the Lewis Brooks Hall of Natural Science, which opened in 1877. Following the closure of the UVA Department of Geology in the 1960s, the collection was moved to various warehouse storage areas, where it was largely forgotten and...

This collection is composed of hand samples, thin sections, geochemical pulps and crushed splits of rock collected by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), a joint program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAFGI), and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS). It includes rocks from AVO field projects as well as samples collected by AVO-supported graduate students as part of our efforts to better understand eruptive processes and mitigate eruption hazards. It is estimated that there are about 30,000 samples in this collection. The Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys division of AVO has no direct...

The Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys provides FGDC metadata records for many different geoscience collections, databases, and individual artifacts. Those are harvested for access through ScienceBase along with records from sample data preservation activities. This collection is in the process of being replaced by a new collection of all geoscience publications. https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/61522455d34e0df5fb9bd804

Static metadata (current to June 2023) of Minnesota's borehole drill cuttings collection maintained by the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS). This collection of over 6,400 sets of drill cuttings dates as far back as the late 1800s. The collection is stored in our soil lab at our office and is accessible to the public by appointment. Each borehole cutting set is assigned a MGS lab number upon arrival, processed and washed by UMN student soil lab workers, and stored chronologically in cardboard boxes. Each cutting set cardboard box contains multiple paper envelopes representing a sample taken at that depth. Each paper envelope contains ~100-200 grams of original sample and ~100 grams of washed sample processed by...

The Geologic Materials Center (GMC) Data Report collection contains analytical and interpretive data resulting from testing by third parties on material donated or borrowed from sample materials housed at the Alaska Geologic Materials Center. These reports are produced by the third party agency or company that conducted the sampling and analysis, and in some cases, interpreted results. The reports have not undergone technical peer review and should not be used or cited as reviewed data.

The legacy thin section collection represents petrographic thin sections collected by DGGS geologists for field projects involving geologic mapping in areas of Alaska with a focus to study the potential and controls of mineral and energy resources. As part of the mapping process, rocks were collected for petrographic work to provide information for discriminating between various rock types and to write unit descriptions of the final rock types or units represented on geologic maps resulting from the field work. The collection represents 27 years or more of work and over 15,000 outcrop thin sections from all over Alaska and a wide variety of field geologists. Samples are housed in various locations within the DGGS...

This collection is comprised of digital, slide and print photographs taken during minerals related field projects from 1970-2020. There are approximately 35,800 photos and slides that need to be culled, documented and archived. 81% of the photos are in digital format and most need to be manually matched with their locations from geologists’ field notes, although a small percentage have locations and descriptions that could easily be archived. The remaining 19% are slide and print format that need the same attention but are in fair to good condition for scanning purposes. There are 50 videos that are also part of this collection. These photos document field sites, geologic features, landscapes and landforms from...
