This study examines local adaptation across the range of sage-grouse and influence on translocation success, specifically at the genetic level. While the study focuses on sage-grouse in WA, the results will be applicable across the specie’s range. Recent genomic evidence has shown that Greater sage-grouse in Washington are much more genetically unique than previously recognized, and may possess dietary adaptations to the local sagebrush community and potentially to other environmental conditions.

The overall objective of this work is to understand how changing climate and associated ecohydrological conditions will impact the distribution of sagebrush ecosystems over the next century. This study will provide valuable insight into the vulnerability of sagebrush ecosystems to changes in climate, climate variability, and disturbance regime. This work utilizes the best currently available downscaled climate data (Maurer) and builds upon recent published results. Products from this project will provide wildlife managers with the ability to categorize and prioritize areas based on their probability of being capable of supporting sagebrush ecosystems in the future, information that is crucial for upcoming listing...

In partnership with WAFWA MDWG and many participating western states, we propose the following three-pronged plan:1) Develop a standalone program which simplifies the technologically challenging analyses outlined in Sawyer et al. (2009b) into a user-friendly software add-on that can be implemented by biologists and managers using their own GPS collar data. 2) Work with biologists and managers of state agencies to analyze mule deer data sets. Specifically, using the program outlined in objective 1, we will assess the broad applicability of the analysis methods to identify migration corridors. This step will include the development of a list of key issues and considerations for analyzing these types of data in addition...

Sagebrush ecosystems continue to undergo widespread degradation due partly to climate change and human development. Effective management must consider how to best conserve and restore habitats to balance support for multiple declining species given finite resources. However, limited tools exist to help address such management questions, especially when also considering how to rapidly restore sagebrush habitats. There is a need for such tools to help guide conservation efforts and ensure they are effective at meeting desired outcomes and goals. We will develop optimization problems based on species abundance, habitat features, predicted future risk (invasive grasses, pinyon juniper encroachment, development, wildfire,...

The CED has been coordinating with CO ES and GUSG Stakeholders to identify needs for tracking implementation (and effectiveness) of recovery actions for GUSG. We propose to develop a CED-module aimed at monitoring recovery actions identified in the [draft] GUSG Recovery Plan and associated Implementation Strategy. We will engage stakeholders/partners to develop an easy-to-use system and dashboard for reporting accomplishments and assessing the progress made to meeting goals/objectives identified to recovery GUSG across their range. This funding would be focues on the dahsboard reporting feature of the module. This effort will provide a necessary tracking system that improve transparency and inform broad-scale planning,...

Recovery of the endangered pallid sturgeon is comprised of interrelated programs (including, Conservation Propagation and Stocking Program (CPSP), and Pallid Sturgeon Population Assessment Program (PSPAP) with numerous contributing agencies. These programs are in need of improved database architecture to integrate and share the capture, tagging, propagation, stocking, genetics, and other critical data to meet program and population monitoring requirements and to measure progress toward recovery. A range-wide relational database architecture or decision support system is needed to manage and integrate the large amounts of data collected by numerous partners and programs in order to evaluate progress toward downlisting...

Grassland birds have declined more rapidly than any other group of land birds in North America in the last 50 years with populations of Spragues Pipit, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspur, and Bairds Sparrow having declined 65-94% during this period. This cross-programmatic collaborative project will expand on a growing network of Motus automated receivers (stations) to provide the first fine-scale quantitative assessment of the migratory period for regional priority grassland songbirds which will inform key knowledge gaps about migration routes and stopover locations. Data collected via Motus automated telemetry tracking will allow the FWS and partners to inform full-life cycle models to reveal limiting...

Populations of lesser prairie-chickens are proposed for listing as threatened or endangered. Lesserprairie-chickens require relatively intact, large grassland dominated habitats for population persistence. Successful conservation efforts require knowledge of potential landscape thresholds and grassland patch configuration affecting lesser prairie-chicken populations. We will use existing population survey, lek location, and data from >700 previously marked lesser prairie-chickens to determine the potential for the presences of large-scale landcover thresholds that influence occupancy and persistence of lesser prairie-chickens as well as testing effects of gradients of grassland composition and configuration within...

There are multiple ongoing applied science technical projects and concepts for sagebrush SHC efforts that require additional capacity in the form of a dedicated full-time post-doctoral candidate to accelerate project delivery and follow up. For example, State of the Sagebrush Spatial Conservation Planning, WAFWA Conservation Design, NatureServe validation of FY21 Conservation Design, Incorporation of Ungulate Migration Areas into Conservation Design. These projects have been delayed due to lack of capacity and tangible results would be benefited and accelerated with the addition of additional capacity via a two-year hire. This $100,000 SA investment supports conservation priorities for the Sagebrush Ecosystem and...

This collaborative project will result in the first fine-scale quantitative assessment of the migratory period for regional priority grassland songbirds (Spragues Pipit, Chestnut-collared and McCowns Longspurs, Bairds and Grasshopper Sparrows, and Lark Bunting). Data collected via automated telemetry tracking will inform full-life cycle models to reveal limiting factors and identify critical habitat for these species throughout the annual cycle, particularly migration.

The CED has had success in tracking implementation of conservation actions for terrestrial at-risk species, and can develop systems to monitor the implementation of and inform effectiveness of conservation, restoration, and recovery actions for aquatic at-risk species as well. Pursuant to the Regional Priority Goal to Recover listed cutthroat trout and improve or maintain the conservation status of other cutthroat trout and Arctic grayling populations, the CED Team proposes to develop a framework and modules that displays important resource layers/values important for biological planning and conservation design in addition to collecting information about recovery actions that may improve habitat and/or reduce threats...

Dr. Cross will support the WAFWA Sagebrush Conservation Design by co-leading the connectivity sub-group for FY22 and 23 with Dr. Zeller. This group will convene ecosystem experts to create spatial action maps for ecological connectivity among sagebrush core areas. This group will then evaluate the degree to which ecological connectivity captures functional connectivity of one high-priority species and one high-priority taxa group within the sagebrush biome: (1) greater sage-grouse and (2) migratory ungulates. Dr. Cross will also directly support the wildlife fire sub-group by serving as a spatial analyst to support analyses.

There is a critical science need of identifying costs, amortized into the future, associated with prioritizing invasive annual grass management as fuels management to prevent costs of further wildland fire in high priority core areas. An invasive annual grass economic assessment will increase awareness of the resource needs and cost-effectiveness based on an evaluation of return on investment through a spatially prioritized approach for implementation. Realistic estimates for costs and ecological outcomes from allocation scenarios will define resources needed stepped down from a conservation design of Defend and Grow the Core Sagebrush Areas. This information will directly inform programmatic implementation levels...

A survey was developed to query sagebrush conservation practitioners to identify social networks, connections, and barriers. It was piloted with 13 advisory team members from state and federal agencies and NGOs, then distributed to a “master list” of 698 individuals identified through iterative polling efforts. The response rate for full surveys was 28%, quite good. The survey revealed 2015 network connections among 509 organizations and agencies working in sagebrush conservation. Work is ongoing to conduct a descriptive network analysis with whole network statistics and node level metrics and to develop the latent structure of the “dimensions of a learning organization” and modeling relationships between network...
