FY2016Information on climate adaptation of native plants used in restoration is needed to help guide seed transfer from collection sites to restoration areas across the Great Basin. This project evaluates variation among populations planted together in common gardens of sagebrushes or bluebunch wheatgrass to achieve the goal.The need for seeds for sagebrush ecosystem restoration and rehabilitation projects has led to the transfer of seed across climate zones and hundreds of miles. FY2017The Integrated Rangeland Fire Management Strategy Actionable Science Plan places a high priority on assessing control measures for invasive annual grasses, which provide fuel for rangeland fire and impede restoration of desirable perennials. Weed-suppressive strains of the bacterium Psuedomonas fluoresens (P.f.) are an emerging but yet untested tool for selectively reducing these annual grasses. P.f. may suppress annuals for approximately 2-5 years, bridging the short-term action of herbicides and long-term resistance provided as native bunchgrasses recover. We found few reports in the literature containing useful data on the nesting phenology of lesser prairie-chickens; therefore, managers must rely on short-term observations and measurements of parameters that provide some predictive insight into climate impacts on nesting ecology. Our field studies showed that prairie-chickens on nests were able to maintain relatively consistent average nest temperature of 31 °C and nest humidities of 56.8 percent whereas average external temperatures (20.3–35.0 °C) and humidities (35.2– 74.9 percent) varied widely throughout the 24 hour (hr) cycle. Background: Yellow-cedar (Callitropsis nootkatensis) is an economically and culturally important tree of the North Pacific coastal rainforest, ranging from northern California through Southeast Alaska. This proposal is to deliver the pilot component of a wetland tracking project initiated by the CIJV in 2010. Sagebrush (Artemisia spp.)-dominated shrublands are one of the most widespread ecosystems in western North America but also among the most imperiled due to interactions among land use, fire, and exotic plants. FY2014Avoiding cheatgrass dominance following tree-reduction treatments on woodland-encroached sagebrush communities is a priority for managers in the Great Basin. Although it is certain that climate change will affect the hydrology and biota of Great Plains streams, how and where these effects will be manifested is not known. This project will predict the effects of climate change on these streams by creating watershed hydrology and fish assemblage models that are both linked to watershed characteristics, then predicting changes resulting from climate change using an ensemble of general circulation models. We will identify the areas of primary conservation concern by calculating Index of Biotic Integrity values for 1,600 samples in an existing regional fish database and compare them to the areas that are most likely to experience change under future climate scenarios.
