The Navajo Nation covers over 70,000 km2 in the Four Corners area of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Climate data from the Navajo Nation have been both sparse and sporadic during the past 100 years, and have been limited to daily data from a handful of National Weather Service Cooperative Observer sites. Climate science researchers have identified the area in and around the Navajo Nation as among the most climate-data poor in the region, and the need to remedy this situation has been identified by both the Desert LCC and the Southern Rockies LCC. The purpose of this workshop is to identify important hydro- and ecological relationships that will affect the ability of floodplain managers to optimize their approaches to providing: 1) fish habitat; 2) wildlife habitat; 3) nutrient and sediment processing; and 4) flood regulation. The resulting conceptual model will guide future floodplain science, including the development of numerical simulation models of high interest relationships. The Monarch’s View of a City project will lay the groundwork for design principles to guide the development, testing and deployment of future urban conservation for the Monarch butterfly across the Eastern half of the country. This project was funded to understand how, where, and why outputs from landscape connectivity models vary, and to suggest approaches to increase comparability and interoperability of models across Landscape Conservation Cooperative boundaries. We began by compiling metadata from 73 landscape connectivity modeling projects into an online, editable spreadsheet. Using spatial data from a subset of studies included in the database, we conducted an uncertainty analysis to understand how much spatial variation there was among predictions from different landscape connectivity models. These products summarize baseline and projected temperature and precipitation. The animations and maps are focused on the northern portion of Alaska, while the raster data have a much larger spatial extent covering Alaska and Western Canada (YT, BC, AB, SK, and MB). Baseline results for 1961-1990 are derived from Climate Research Unit (CRU) TS 3.1 or TS 3.1.01 data downscaled to 2km grids; results for the other time periods are based on a composite of projections from five Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) General Circulation Models under the A1B and A2 emissions scenarios, downscaled to 2km grids. The role of lynx dispersal in maintaining their populations at the landscape scale is unclear. A large proportion of local lynx populations are known to disperse following a snowshoe hare population crash, but whether these dispersal events contribute to the cyclic dynamics of neighboring populations is not well understood. If lynx dispersal does play an important role in lynx population dynamics then the conservation of dispersal corridors is critical to maintaining those dynamics. Building upon the successful efforts of SARP, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), and other federal, state, and local partners to establish and implement NFCAs in the Llano River watershed, TX and Chipola River watershed, FL (Birdsong et al., 2015, Garrett et al. 2015), we will coordinate a series of watershed-based conservation planning workshops focused on eight priority river systems in the Great Plains (i.e., the White River, Platte River, Arkansas-Kansas Rivers, Canadian River, Deep Fork River, Red River, Brazos River, and Colorado River). This collaborative project provided biologists and managers along the Atlantic coast with tools to predict effects of accelerating sea-level rise on the distribution of piping plover breeding habitat, test those predictions, and feed results back into the modeling framework to improve predictive capabilities. Immediate model results will be used to inform a coast-wide assessment of threats from sea-level rise and related habitat conservation recommendations that can be implemented by land managers and inform recommendations to regulators. Case studies incorporating resilience of piping plover habitat into management plans for specific locations demonstrate potential applications.

This study aids in developing a synergistic ecological-coastal resiliency framework for a significant portion of the coastal habitat on Fire Island. Amphibians and reptiles are experiencing severe habitat loss throughout North America; however, this threat to biodiversity can be mitigated by identifying and managing areas that serve a disproportionate role in sustaining herpetofauna. Identification of such areas must take into consideration the dynamic nature of habitat suitability. The Chesapeake Conservancy and its partners will use the landscape science products created through the North Atlantic LCC to identify and prioritize locations and methods that would best address the regional and local conservation needs identified by these communities. Using this information, the Chesapeake Conservancy will work with its local partners to develop efficient and effective on-the-ground conservation projects that will protect the Susquehanna’s ecological and cultural resources. As part of this initiative, the Chesapeake Conservancy will share and promote the North Atlantic LCC landscape science products with its network of more than 25 participating organizations and institutions.

Sediment and nutrient runoff contributes to loss of agricultural productivity, degradation of local streams, and hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. The North Fork Maquoketa Basin has been identified as a major contributor of sediment and nutrients. Agricultural best management practices are now being implemented in the upper basin through the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resource Conservation Service in conjunction with local watershed groups. This project integrates a reforestation decision support model for priority forest breeding birds and a restoration decision support tool for the federally-threatened Louisiana Black Bear. It was developed specifically to focus habitat restoration projects on frequently flooded agricultural lands within priority portions of the delta of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, which were funded primarily by the Walton Family Foundation in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
This communications strategy provides a comprehensive framework of prescribed fire issues and messages within which the East Gulf Coastal Plain Joint Venture can identify priority actions according to their ‘niche’ of focusing on fire’s ecological benefits to wildlife, especially birds, particularly at a landscape scale. The strategy is based upon information provided in interviews of 45 prescribed fire/resource management experts throughout the East Gulf Coastal Plain, as well as guidance from the East Gulf Coastal Plain Joint Venture staff and board members.

Despite the lack of surface flows, the Colorado River riparian corridor in Mexico has proven to be ecologically resilient. Floods in the 1980s and 90s in the region brought back large swaths of native riparian habitat, which still persist today in some areas along the river.
