This dataset provides the results of an assessment of estuary habitat condition in the conterminous United States. To analyze estuary condition, a cumulative disturbance index was developed based on habitat stressor variable data available at a national scale for anthropogenic disturbances measured within estuaries and their associated watersheds. Twenty-eight variables were combined within stressor categories to develop four sub-indices of disturbance for land use, alterations of river flows, pollution sources, and estuary eutrophication. This shapefile contains sub-indices comprised of various anthropogenic land use/covers respresentative of the risk of potential habitat degradation to streams within the state of Hawaii. This file is an updated version of 'nfhap_hci_hawaii.shp' and incorporates the suggestion from the Hawaii Fish Habitat Partnership of removing trails and paths from the road network to help better represent amounts of disturbance in remote areas such as the Na Pali coast. Subindices are summarized for local and network catchments specific to perennial stream reaches throughout the state. This shapefile contains fish habitat condition index (HCI) scores as well as specific disturbance indices for 6th level Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC12) watersheds of the Watershed Boundary Dataset. The source datasets compiled and attributed to spatial units were identified as being: (1) meaningful for assessing fluvial fish habitat; (2) consistent across the entire study area in the way that they were assembled; (3) broadly representative of conditions in the past 10 years, and (4) of sufficient spatial resolution that they could be used to make valid comparisons among HUC12 units. Accruate mapping of tidal wetlands is vital for effective conservation and restoration of these valued habitats, and good mapping is key to strategic planning for coastal resilience. Tidal wetlands are defined by regular inundation by the tides; therefore, mapping of tidal wetlands should be based on knowledge of tidal water levels and the land areas inundated by the tides. This point layer represents estuaries present within PMEP’s spatial data system. This layer was developed by members of PMEP, based partly on previous estuary inventory efforts as well asthe goals of PMEP. Currently, there are 444 estuaries present in this layer, covering the West Coast of the contiguous United States. Estuaries were included based on their current or future potential to provide habitat for fish species. It is possible that this list will expand or contract over time, as determined by the needs of PMEP.
This map service layer provides information for projects funded by the 20 regional fish habitat partnerships through the National Fish Habitat funds. Projects funded since 2006 are represented in the service layer and the data are expected to be updated annually. Projects in the database range from on-the-ground restoration, partnership coordination, outreach and education events, and species distribution and habitat assessments.

The Regional Estuary Assessment for the northern Gulf of Mexico represents an effort to develop, test, and implement a new assessment methodology for marine habitats that improves the analytical basis for identifying impacts to estuary fish habitats. Building from work completed for the National Estuary Assessment, this approach includes: 1) information on fish and shellfish presence/absence from over 70,000 sampling events collected over two decades, to better relate fish habitat condition to natural and anthropogenic variables; 2) data on natural factors, to better incorporate information on the natural susceptibility of individual estuaries; and 3) regional datasets not available on a nationally-consistent basis....

This spatial data layer provides an indirect estimate of emergent, scrub-shrub and forested tidal wetland losses for 55 non-lagoonal estuaries spanning the contiguous United States West Coast. Losses are defined as those areas that were tidal wetlands prior to European settlement, but are no longer tidal wetlands today. Losses were estimated by comparing the National Wetland Inventory‘s mapping of current tidal wetlands to the Pacific Marine and Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership (PMEP)’s West Coast Estuary Extent mapping. The Passage Assessment Database (PAD) geospatial file contains locations of known and potential barriers to salmonid migration in California streams with additional information about each record. The PAD is an ongoing map-based inventory of known and potential barriers to anadromous fish in California, compiled and maintained through a cooperative interagency agreement. This shapefile contains cumulative fish habitat condition index (HCI) scores and specific disturbance indices for local and network stream catchments as well as the downstream main channel catchment of perennial and intermittent streams reaches of the five main island of Hawai'i. This item contains two datasets of SARP Conservation Opportunity Areas (COAs) as determined by the SARP Steering Committee and SARP Coastal Committee. To determine inland COAs, each Member State within the Steering Committee has selected 5 inland HUC 8 basins to be designated as SARP COAs. In addition, the SARP Coastal Committee has designated Coastal COAs.
This map service layer provides information for projects that were supported by at least one of the 20 regional fish habitat partnerships but did not leverage National Fish Habitat funds. This service layer is a work in progress and only represents those projects shared by fish habitat partners. A more complete representation of supported projects is in progress. Currently this service layer will be updated as new information becomes available, but as this service layer matures it is expected to be updated annually. Projects in the database range from on-the-ground restoration, partnership coordination, outreach and education events, and species distribution and habitat assessments.

Eelgrass is a type of marine, flowering seagrass that grows underwater in temperate marine environments around the world, and on the West coast includes three species: (1) Zostera marina, (2) non-native dwarf eelgrass, Zostera japonica, and (3) a distinct species to Southern California, Zostera pacifica. In 2014, TNC and PMEP produced the report, “Nursey Functions of U.S. West Coast Estuaries: The State of Knowledge for Juveniles of Focal Invertebrate and Fish Species,” which found that eelgrass (Zostera sp.) meadows are one of the most important juvenile habitats for a broad array of fish species. These data represent the Biotic Component (BC) of the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) for estuaries of the West Coast of the contiguous United States. The BC is organized into a branched hierarchy of five nested levels: biotic setting, biotic class, biotic subclass, biotic group, and biotic community. Classes and subclasses of the BC are determined by the dominant biota (defined as the most abundant in terms of percent cover) of the substrate.
