Regional regression equations were calculated in Puerto Rico with generalized least squares techniques to estimate flood frequency statistics at ungaged locations using drainage area as the only explanatory variable. The island was divided into 2 regions to minimize residuals. The region division that resulted in lower and more balanced residuals runs primarily north-south near the center of the island, mostly along an 8-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC8) boundary. The division line runs through a HUC8 polygon on the southern end of the island, but care was taken to include entire watersheds and consideration was given where hydrologic and physiographic properties differed. This data release includes geographic information...

The National Hydrologic Model (NHM) is a modeling framework which has been applied to the continental United States through the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS). The PRMS model of Puerto Rico extends the NHM and allows the simulation of rainfall-driven hydrologic conditions in the Commonwealth. Calibration of the NHM Puerto Rico model involved an initial manual calibration to understand the important processes and develop a basic representation of the hydrology. This is followed by an automated calibration procedure using the Let Us CAlibrate (LUCA) multi-objective function model calibration tool. A four-step procedure is used in Luca to separately calibrate parameters for solar radiation, evapotranspiration,...

Bias-corrected daily precipitation at 1-kilometer (km) scale is provided for Puerto Rico. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was used by Bowden and others (2018) to dynamically downscale the Centre National de Recherches Meteorologiques-CERFACS (CNRM) model for the historical period 1985-2005. Total hourly precipitation data (convective plus non-convective) for the innnermost domain in Bowden and others (2018; their domain 3) was aggregated to a daily timestep and then bias-corrected using Multiplicative Quantile Delta Mapping (MQDM; Cannon and others, 2015) with Daymet v4 as the observational gridded precipitation dataset (Thornton and others, 2020). The bias-corrected daily precipitation data is...

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates annual public-supply water withdrawn from freshwater sources in Puerto Rico using data obtained from various agencies on the island, including the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), and the Puerto Rico Department of Health (PRDOH). Public-supply withdrawals from surface and groundwater sources are tabulated by municipality, and by PRASA water service area or public water supply system. When supporting information is available, the USGS also tabulates annual domestic water use for users supplied by public systems such as PRASA and non-PRASA community water systems which are certified by PRDOH. Domestic water use includes indoor and outdoor uses at residences....

An interdisciplinary and multiagency study was conducted in southern Florida to examine harmful algal bloom (HAB) dynamics on the Caloosahatchee River, which drains from Lake Okeechobee to the west into the Gulf of Mexico. Using in-situ mesocosm experiments, ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, and urea were altered from ambient conditions to determine the effects on cyanotoxin biosynthesis gene presence and quantity as measured via quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Eight experiments were conducted seasonally from May 2019 through July 2021 at the W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam. The experimental installations consisted of three floating metal cradles each containing four opaque fiberglass chambers filled with...

Synthetic seismograms provide a means to calibrate (groundtruth) seismic-reflection profiles to specific subsurface stratigraphic features observed in one-dimensional core and geophysical log data acquired from wells. Independently, Walker Marine Geophysical Company and Geokinetics Incorporated used velocity data from 14 borehole-compensated sonic logs as input for specialized geophysical software to generate 14 synthetic seismograms. Velocity data from the sonic logs were converted to a synthetic seismic trace using synthetic-seismogram production software, reproduced either 5 or 8 times, and placed side-by-side to resemble a seismic-reflection profile. For each well, the synthetic seismogram was used to relate...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board, has compiled a series of geospatial datasets for Puerto Rico to be implemented into the USGS StreamStats application (https://streamstats.usgs.gov/ss/). These geospatial datasets, along with basin characteristics datasets for Puerto Rico published as a separate USGS data release (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9HK9SSQ), were used to delineate watersheds and develop the peak-flow and low-flow regression equations used by StreamStats.
