This data release contains estimates of mean daily gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER) in Bronson and Fanno Creeks, Oregon during August of 2016. These estimates were part of a larger study of the water-quality effects of beaver dams and beaver activity in selected urban streams of the Tualatin River Basin in northwestern Oregon. The mean daily GPP and ER values were estimated using two approaches (both of which are publicly available and documented): 1) a USGS model developed using the R programming language and 2) a Washington Department of Ecology model that runs in Excel. Inputs for the models included hourly measurements of dissolved-oxygen concentration, water temperature, photosynthetically...

This data set contains example data for exploration of the theory of regression based regionalization. The 90th percentile of annual maximum streamflow is provided as an example response variable for 293 streamgages in the conterminous United States. Several explanatory variables are drawn from the GAGES-II data base in order to demonstrate how multiple linear regression is applied. Example scripts demonstrate how to collect the original streamflow data provided and how to recreate the figures from the associated Techniques and Methods chapter.

Lake Poinsett is a 260-hectare (640 acres) lake located on Crowley’s Ridge in northeastern Arkansas, approximately 6 km southeast of Harrisburg, Arkansas within Poinsett County. The lake was built for recreation by the Arkansas Highway Department in 1960 by constructing a roughly 800-meter dam across the southern boundary of the Distress Creek watershed. The dam is currently operated by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). AGFC and Arkansas Natural Resources Commission (ANRC) plan to drain the lake to allow access for a series of bank stabilization and dam safety improvements. Because none of the original blueprints exist, AGFC asked the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to conduct a series of differential...

Groundwater residence times were simulated for the major regional aquifers of the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system from New York to North Carolina using particle tracking in a regional groundwater flow model. Millions of particles were distributed throughout the aquifers of the North Atlantic Coastal Plain in a MODFLOW model with a volume-weighted algorithm, then tracked backwards using MODPATH6 (Pollock, 2012) until termination of their paths at their sources of origin, usually the simulated water table. Particles were tracked under simulated transient hydrologic conditions from the reference time of January 1, 2018 backwards to 1900, then under simulated steady-state conditions prior to 1900 until...

This data release consists of orthophotographs of the Snow River in Alaska acquired on September 1, 2018. The orthophotographs were produced from images obtained using a Hasselblad A6D-100C 100 megapixel digital mapping camera deployed within a pod mounted on the landing gear of a Robinson R44 helicopter. Images were acquired as the helicopter transited a series of flight lines designed to provide complete coverage, with ample overlap, of the study area along the Snow River. Also within the pod was an ATLANS GPS/Inertial Motion Unit (IMU) that recorded the position and orientation of the platform during the flight. This information was used to geo-reference the images by performing aerial triangulation and bundle...
The San Juan Generating Station in Waterflow, NM, owned by the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) is a coal-fired power plant that operates on coal mined on the same property. This plant is scheduled to shut down in 2022. In light of this impending closure, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) is interested in purchasing the plant's raw-water reservoir for use in the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project (NGWSP). Concerns about contamination leaking from the reservoir or being mobilized by groundwater flow affected by the leaking reservoir have resulted in Reclamation eliciting a short study of the water and sediment chemistry surrounding the reservoir and the recovery system set up by PNM. The U.S. Geological...

During the spring and summer of 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey collected water-quality samples for nutrient analysis at 45 stations across the state of Connecticut and adjacent areas of New York and Rhode Island to better understand the groundwater discharge component of nitrogen loading to the Long Island Sound. The targeted stations were located in small drainage basins (less than 50 square kilometers) in the southern portion of the Long Island Sound watershed. Sites were selected randomly from groups based on expected drivers or controls on baseflow nitrogen loads. Factors used in the grouping included four metrics calculated for the upstream watershed: percent impervious cover, septic system density, percent...

Slug additions are often the most accurate method for determining discharge when traditional current meter or acoustic measurements are unreliable because of high turbulence, rocky streambed, shallow or sheet flow, or the stream is physically inaccessible (e.g., under ice or canyon walls) or unsafe to wade (Zellweger et al., 1989, Kilpatrick and Cobb 1984, Ferranti 2015). The slug addition method for determining discharge requires an injection of a known amount of a single salt and high-frequency downstream measurement of solute concentration to capture the response curve (Kilpatrick and Cobb 1984). A new slug method was developed to determine stream discharge utilizing specific conductance and ionic molal conductivities...
