This data set includes dissolved oxygen (DO) and specific conductivity (SpC) data collected in both the surface water and shallow streambed at the Quashnet River, Mashpee, USA from 2014-16. This data was collected to better understand groundwater discharge to the river and associated brook trout habitat. DO was typically near saturation in surface water and some groundwater, but is reduced in streambed zones that may be influenced by buried peat lenses. SpC was used as an indicator of groundwater flowpath dynamics, and lower values were generally associated with higher DO.

These data sets present results from the analyses of groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells and monitoring intervals in bedrock wells in the mudstone aquifer underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. The water samples were collected between 2008 and 2013 and were analyzed for field parameters, inorganic and organic constituents, and the abundances of selected microbes of importance to the evaluation of biological degradation of organic contaminants in groundwater. The collection and analyses of the groundwater samples coincides with conducting a bioaugmentation experiment in a targeted region of the mudstone aquifer. The purpose of the bioaugmentation was to introduce...

This data release consist of the annual sediment depositional volume at five floodplain and five point bar sites on Powder River in southeastern Montana from 1979 through 2017. These 10 sites are a subgroup of a larger group of cross-sections established in 1975 and 1977 to monitor the channel changes along a 90-kilometer reach of Powder River. In addition to the sediment deposition data, characteristic of the annual peak flood are listed. The data are in 1 Excel files containing worksheets (10) corresponding to each channel cross-section .

The U.S. Geological Survey obtained measurements of channel geometry, flow velocity, and river discharge from five rivers in Alaska September 18–20, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge. The streamflow data were acquired from the Knik, Matanuska, Chena, and Salcha Rivers and Montana Creek using TeleDyne RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), including the RioPro, StreamPro, and RiverRay models. The original *.mmt and *.pd0 format files are provided in this data release. This data release supports the following article: Legleiter, C.J., Kinzel, P.J., and Nelson, J.M., 2017, Remote measurement of river discharge using thermal particle image velocimetry (PIV) and various...

Surface-based 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were used to investigate the distribution of permafrost at wetland sites on the alluvial plain north of the Tanana River, 20 km southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, in June and September 2014. The sites contained habitat types characteristic of interior Alaska, including thermokarst bog, forested permafrost plateau, and a rich fen. These habitats range from treed to open and vary in groundcover vegetation and peat thickness. Individual surveys used a cable with 56 electrodes at 2-m spacing. At a fen site, ERT surveys were performed across a mixed spruce forest area across a vegetation gradient into an open fen area. At a bog site, surveys were performed...

Permafrost (perennially frozen) and active-layer (seasonally thawed) soils varying in soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content and radiocarbon age were collected from three sites in interior Alaska to determine potential release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved N (TDN), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) upon thaw. Soil cores were cut into 15 cm thick sections, and deep active-layer (15-30 cm above the permafrost boundary) and shallow permafrost (15-30 cm below the permafrost boundary) sections were thawed and leached with deionized water. Soil leachates were analyzed for DOC, TDN, nitrate (NO3-), and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations, dissolved organic matter...

For nearly two and a half decades following World War II, production wastes from the world’s largest manufacturer of technical DDT were discharged into sewers of Los Angeles County. Following treatment, the wastes were released via a submarine outfall system to nearshore coastal waters where a portion accumulated in shallow sediments of the Palos Verdes Shelf (PVS). An investigation of the pore-water geochemistry of DDT-related compounds (DDX) was undertaken in an effort to understand factors controlling the rate of reductive dechlorination (RDC) of the major DDT degradate, 4,4’-DDE. Equilibrium matrix-solid phase microextraction (matrix-SPMEeq) combined with automated thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass...

This is the first of two datasets containing derived data necessary to reproduce the results of the associated journal article: "On the Sensitivity of Annual Streamflow to Air Temperature." This first dataset contains basic basin characteristics of 2,673 gaged basins worldwide, along with associated monthly time series of basin-mean precipitation, air temperature, and net radiation. The streamflow data themselves are available directly from the Global Runoff Data Centre. From the inventory of discharge data holdings of the Global Runoff Data Centre, 2,673 stream gages were selected for which (1) at least 25 complete calendar years of monthly data overlapped in time with available climate data; (2) 500-m-resolution...

Field measurements of water depth were acquired from a reach of the upper Sacramento River in northern California, September 12-14, 2017, to support research on salmon habitat and geomorphic change along the Sacramento River and, more broadly, remote sensing of rivers. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the shallow channel margins with RTK GPS receivers and measuring water surface elevations along the water's edge and bed elevations within the channel; depths were calculated by subtracting bed elevations from the nearest water surface elevation. For the deeper areas representing most of the channel, depths were recorded along a series of cross-sections by a SonTek RiverSurveyor...

PHREEQCI is a widely-used geochemical computer program that can be used to calculate chemical speciation and specific conductance of a natural water sample from its chemical composition (Charlton and Parkhurst, 2002; Parkhurst and Appelo, 1999). The specific conductance of a natural water calculated with PHREEQCI (Appelo, 2010) is reliable for pH greater than 4 and temperatures less than 35 °C (McCleskey and others, 2012b). An alternative method for calculating the specific conductance of natural waters is accurate over a large range of ionic strength (0.0004–0.7 mol/kg), pH (1–10), temperature (0–95 °C), and specific conductance (30–70,000 μS/cm) (McCleskey and others, 2012a). PHREEQCI input files for calculating...

The consequence of the 1996 Buffalo Creek wildfire disturbance and a subsequent high-intensity summer convective rain storm (~100 mm h-1) was the deposition of a sediment superslug in the Spring Creek basin (26.8 km2) of the Front Range Mountains in Colorado. Changes in the superslug near the confluence of Spring Creek with the South Platte River were monitored by cross-section surveys at 18 nearly equally-spaced cross sections along a 1500 m study reach for 18 years (1996-2014) to understand the evolution and internal stratigraphy of this type of disturbance in response to different geomorphic processes. These data consist of 18 Excel files (one for each cross section) containing worksheets corresponding to each...
